Nintendo's NX Controller Could Have Detachable D-Pad, According To Updated Patents

Newly updated patent shows multiple directional input configurations.

New updates have been made to Nintendo's patent featuring a controller with detachable parts, further supporting the rumour that the company's upcoming console, codenamed NX, will feature a more freeform design. As reported on Nintendo Life (via Reddit), the updated patent shows that a D-pad input can be easily added or removed from the top right corner of the controller.

Another figure shows that multiple control schemes can be switched in or out, with varying configurations offered. While Nintendo has not confirmed any details about its next gaming platform, the updates do support the previously suggested notion of the NX's portability and flexible design.

It's worth noting that these images are not necessarily set in stone or even indicative of future designs that come into fruition, and that these could merely be samples.

The patent is dated October 2013 for its first filing, and was published in 2014.

Previously, reports indicated that the NX will feature detachable controllers. The accessory could have buttons, a rotating dial, or other inputs. Last month, rumours surfaced that the NX console itself would be a handheld device that could be docked for use with a television.

The NX was first announced by Nintendo in March 2015, at a press conference. During the announcement, the company described the project as representing a "brand-new concept." This was reiterated earlier this year when Nintendo confirmed a release date for the NX. The console is scheduled for launch in March 2017.

I would only buy the NX if Nintendo built it to compete with smartphones. The removable controls would give it a gaming edge against iPhone and Android handsets. The Tegra X2 (assuming it's using it) would give it processing power equivalent to top-tier smartphones. Phablet-like dimensions would make it portable enough to fit in a person's pocket. And Nintendo's OS would need to come equipped with major 3rd party mobile apps: Netflix, Facebook, Snapshat, Twitter, etc. Compatibility with both CDMA and GSM networks would be a good idea as well.

All of this assumes Nintendo has designed the NX to function as a smartphone, which is probably not the case, although it would be the smartest thing they could do. We already know the NX will not be competing with the PS4 and X1 in graphical fidelity, so why not go after the largest electronic entertainment market (mobile) on the planet instead?

And We can talk about the NX all we like..... Fact is the NX is nothing more than a Mobile Wii U that you can now take the crappy Gamepad with you wherever you go,,,, ITS A WII U 2.... And guess what its NOT even as powerful as the Xbox one..... Once again the great Nintendo selling YOU their Underpowered Old shit at a Premium price..... But Hey no doubt all of you brainless morons will buy it....... Am I right ? ........ P.S Unfortunately that probably includes me .... Damn You Nintendo!

I guess I can only assume that the Information they give me is in Fact based upon some kind of Leaked inside information or over the years based upon their own Professional Gaming experience ..... Either way I'm sure their combined knowledge regarding the upcoming NX is far superior to Yours...... Or am I wrong ..... Maybe your a Nintendo employee who is just unhappy with my comments because its wording is just a little too close to the Truth for your liking

@zenobius: Im just a dude...a dude run by common sense unlike a lot of people. Patents are common in a technology company. I happen to know that just because theres a patent for something doesnt mean its gonna be the exact product coming to market. They are probably just trying to protect the idea of something not necessarily making that exact thing as a product. The patent might not even be related to NX at all. Common sense would tell you that. Fact remains every so called NX leak has been proven false or made up by a fan who wanted to capitalize off of the popularity of Nx rumors, I dont wanna hear about rumors and conjecture about something. I want facts only. So Im waiting until Nintendo actually says something concrete. In other words until it gets announced in a Nintendo direct or by someone high in Nintendo then Ill take it more seriously otherwise its just a waste of time....

My god stop with the gimmicks and just make a great updated powerful game system that can compete with the big boys. Yes you broke ground with the Wii, but really, time to get back to making systems folks may want to buy with out all the creative "outside the box" stupid stuff.

Avatar image for deactivated-5a1d4b615a3a3

@Triton: It's only the fact that they do things differently that keeps Nintendo going, Nintendo tried competing with Sony and MS with the N64 and Gamecube and got beat heavily. Being the people who offer something different works for them.

This might not be a bad idea. Look at all the peripherals that Nintendo has to put out to appease their fans. There's still people who are clinging to controllers from 2001 like they're the only way to play Smash. Instead of having to make their game work on ancient controllers, they could just punch out these parts, and BOOM! You got a GCN controller.

This would be awesome for their VC library. You'd be using controls identical to what you used on the original consoles. Instead of having to manufacture controllers from across 6 gens, they can make these. I know people will try to look at this in a negative light, but this might be the first real solution to having access to games from multiple consoles, but only having one controller solution. Way to go Nintendo!

@bunchanumbers: Nintendo fanboys are some of the worst, they accept all of this dumb stuff and think it's going to be awesome. People need to stop praising Nintendo and not support their gimmicks or Nintendo will never be great again.

@darksouls: I would say Sony PlayStation Fanatics are worse Sony treats their consumers and audience like imbeciles and they keep wanting more...

pop in a D-pad

or analog stick

or touch pad

the replaceable D-pad is better than the accessory analog stick for the 3DS...

@megakick: Yeah, all fanboy's have their issues (clearly) but I still think Nintendos are the worst due to how blind they are to Nintendo's stupid gimmicks. I do agree that Sony fanboys need to open their eyes and start realizing Sony isn't their God though lol.

Avatar image for Jinzo_111887

@darksouls: The thing is he is right about the design. It has potential. Imagine being able to go from traditional controller for platformers and beat'em ups to something resembling an arcade pad for fighting games. Likewise, it would theoretically be possible to turn it into a double handed N64 controller (one where the middle prong is removed and things like the analog stick, Z-trigger, and start button are on the left side with the D-pad and L button and A, B, R, and the C-buttons are on the right side). It could be an interesting controller, especially if it ends up being possible to use it with PC games.

Avatar image for catsimboy

@bunchanumbers: People wanted the GCN controller back because the Wiimotes are crap and the classic controllers had to be connected to a Wiimote to function which a dumb design even for Nintendo, king of the dumb designs. Up until the Wii U pro controller the Gamecube controllers were the best Nintendo controller you could get, it's not just nostalgia, it's wanting something that works.

Avatar image for bunchanumbers

@catsimboy: If that were true then why were people still asking for Gamecube controllers for Smash U? Pro controllers exist. Lets face it. People want those controllers because its all they know for Smash. They loved it during the Melee era and they will always love them. This is the best solution possible until they can finally let go of GCN controllers.

After reading the article and the comments this Jurassic Park conversation came to mind:

Nintendo: I don't think you're giving us our due credit. Our scientists have done things which nobody's ever done before...

Consumers: Yeah, yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should.

All we keep hearing is about this detachable controllers and not much about anything else. When we ask Nintendo about any info for their upcoming console all they're saying is we afraid people might "steal our ideas and that's why they not giving us much of nothing. The only thing they are scare of is telling people that they have another console that can't technically compete with current or upcoming consoles next year. When will they finally realize that their philosophic of we are not about power we are about games is not working exactly like they want people to believe that it is. For years game companies have been turning their back on Nintendo consoles because Nintendo consoles are under power and can't compete or produce as good looking games as the other game consoles can do. But no they are still going alone with the same stuff, we are about games not console power. Yes Games will make or break a console but this days a Powerful console is also as important because it can do wonders with your games and can help produce wonderful looking games. For years now the only AAA games have been coming straight from Nintendo and nobody else. I have been a Nintendo supporter basically all my life but you would think how much longer can they continue to survive with just them making the games for their consoles? One thing we have learn through the years never bet against Nintendo they are like the dinosaurs that will never extinct.

But Mr. Bart such a thing has never been done!

Sure a completely modular controller is a good idea, it'll be great when the cheap little discs slide out of controller when I'm playing. It'll be great fun having to go find the correct controller parts when the game won't work with my current configuration. It'll take that feeling of "oh crap where's my Wii Nunchuck attachment?" to the next level.

I'm getting sick of these "reports" and those like it. I miss the old days where we would find out about a console (or a game) when it was actually revealed. Everyone nowadays has to have every little bit of information as soon as possible, even if it's not true, and it's just tweaky/junkie weird, if you ask me. No one even wants to be surprised anymore.

Avatar image for catsimboy

@FLEEBS: Well if the Wii U hadn't died halfway through this gen people wouldn't be wildly speculating on what Nintendo is doing to reverse their fortunes. And then Nintendo isn't helping by giving no information because they're afraid people might "steal their ideas" i.e. they have no idea what they're doing.as they make pikmin plush sacrifices to Miyamothulu the Deep One.

People want to know what console some of their favorite franchises are going to be on and if it's going to be another trainwreck.

@catsimboy: Everyone's gotta remember it WAS NOT the Wii U's fault it failed... Who's fault is it... Really!!! NINTENDOS FAULT! Nintendo the maker of the NX! Instead of coming out hard with all the heavy hitters, Zelda, Mario, Metroid, nope they fiddle farted around and now they want to ditch the most powerful Nintendo system ever built the Wii U... Something's wrong with this picture... I don't think i'm going to buy another Nintendo system again after how they just want to throw the Wii U out the door. They actually said they built the Wii U rumor has it to be a beast of a system to power this new Zelda: A Breath of Life. But no this new NX don't excite me at all especially when I paid over $350 for the Wii U and I have barely even played it because I had been waiting for the new Zelda, Mario and Metroid games and NINTENDO (not the Wii U) had failed me :(, whats to say they will fail the NX, because it probably will happen...

@angrycreep: Well I was just referencing something Iwata said last year when he said he didn't want their competitors to steal their ideas. But yeah being about games doesn't help if you are solely reliant on first party games and you take so damn long to make them. They said that there's going to be a good launch lineup for the NX but once those games are out what then? More 6+ month to a year droughts between Zelda HD remasters and mediocre titles like Yoshi's Wooly World?

@cboye18: Have you not noticed the increasing interest in modular design in products? Yeah, you can say how strange something is, but it doesn't change the fact that you have no idea what the hell you're talking about. Like a person bitching about an industry they really have no idea about...like gamers trying to comprehend the gaming industry, yet they are wrong almost 100% of the time.
