As the ever-important holiday season approaches, Nintendo today announced pricing details for its Skylanders-style toy line, amiibo, and revealed a range of new Wii U and 2DS hardware bundles.

Amiibo toys will sell for $13 each, and the first dozen were revealed today. They are Mario, Peach, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, Kirby, Fox, Marth, Villager, and Wii Fit Trainer. More are coming in the future, Nintendo said.

This bundle is exclusive to Wal-Mart

The upcoming Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U, due to launch this holiday, will be the first game to support amiibo toys. Others will include Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10, and Yoshi's Wooly World. Further details about specific amiibo functionality for those games will be announced shortly, Nintendo said.

Nintendo's pricing for amiibo is roughly in line with Skylanders and Disney Infinity figures, which sell for around $8-$15 for a single toy, and even more for combo packs.

Nintendo also today announced a pair of new Wii U hardware bundles, the first of which is called the Super Mario 3D World Deluxe Set. Launching in mid-September, this bundle will include a console, and copies of Super Mario 3D World and Nintendo Land for $300. Also launching in mid-September is a Mario Kart 8 bundle that is exclusive to Wal-Mart. It includes a console and a copies of Mario Kart 8 and Nintendo Land for $300.

On the portable side, Nintendo announced three new Nintendo 2DS bundles. Launching in early October are electric blue, crimson red, and sea green 2DS systems that come with a download code for Mario Kart 7. These bundles will sell for $130.

Are you planning to buy any new Nintendo games or hardware this holiday? Do these new bundles appeal to you? Let us know in the comments below!

so what exactly does an amibo do? the way i see it is your playing a game and at any time you can change character by placing your amiibo on the game pad, is that how it works in a nutshell?

if so whats the point in that

<< LINK REMOVED >> For "smash" at least, it's a partner for team match/ a training partner/ other modes and it grows/ gains experience and level, you can also pit it with other amiibos for it to gain experience or just for the fun of it. I don't know, but I'll get an amiibo if I can actually use it, for smash I think it's just a plus for me.

I like the concept behind amiibo but I don't like that I have to buy a figurine.

Why not a Bayonetta 2 Wii U bundle?

Pathetic?

11 of the 12 are already in the top 20 best sellers on amazon.

This will blow up.

Good for Nintendo.

@The_Nine Wii fit trainer, Marth and Villager are not in the 20. Not surprisingly, they're the lamest of the bunch.

The others are not in top 20, they are THE top sellers. Only rivaled by wimmote and pro controller.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's hilarious because those are exactly the three I didn't pre-order from the first set. I get that the Wii Fit Trainer is a character in Smash but it simply has no marquee value what-so-ever when it comes to anything outside of the game(s) it comes from. It doesn't have franchise potential. While Animal Crossing is popular, it's not a retro franchise, and how lame does "Villager" sound on the marquee next to clearly defined characters?

Marth... I mean I'll say it again, and not many people enjoy hearing this: Fire Emblem is a Nintendo franchise but it's not really seen as a Nintendo franchise. It's not a franchise that's immediately attributable to Nintendo. It looks like a series of games Atlus would publish from some obscure developer. The characters themselves have no connection to Nintendo because they're generic anime garbage that you'd get from any number of dev studios overseas. It's not a franchise that most people would name or think of when they think of Nintendo games. I think the female characters from the series would sell better, and sadly we all know why... that has a different appeal altogether.

Avatar image for golemoy

Yeah i agree with you, especially about Marth. Miyamoto have said that Nintendo games are so unique they should be their own genre. And this is why Smash Bros worked so well, it had characters from different games but because they are all Nintendo, it felt natural to see them together.

But when they put in a third party character like snake, he was clearly out of place. And Marth feels the same way. He might be a nintendo character, but he isn't "nintendo" (he's pretendo!). **** even megaman and pacman are more "nintendo" than Marth.

It's worth noting that when other companies make crossover games (vs capcom series, sega all-stars racing, ps all stars battle royale etc) they feel awkward and not authentic. I mean... parappa fighting kratos? give me a break!

A Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle is really smart, since Mario Kart 8 is one of the most desirable games for the Wii U. It's like the Xbox One Titanfall bundle, it'd be stupid not to do such a bundle.

$13 for a tiny figurine. Forget it.

Avatar image for Zorlac

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's a lot more than a tiny figure (while I agree it's too expensive, standard skylanders are $8 here), you really need to read the article before you post. If you read it and still think it's just a figure, then you have some bigger issues at hand.

Avatar image for kiniro_nokocchi

@con_wars In Smash Bros. for example, you can scan your figure and it'll make a special "profile" for that character. You buy a Pikachu Amiibo figure, scan it, and now you have a customized Pikachu in your game. You can fight with or against it, or have it fight alone, and the Amiibo will level up and gain special stats to make it unique to a default version of that character. You'll be able to change its moveset and upgrade its moves (they'll be stronger and look different). It will gain "equipment" and customization options as it levels up. They emphasized that, even at the same level, two peoples' Amiibos can be different even though it's the same character, because it changes based on the way you used and leveled it up. The figure contains data in it, which can be transferred into another player's Wii U, so you can use your buffed up character while playing Smash Bros at your friend's place. This is pretty cool and gives Smash a new meta, and can impact players who play competitively and bring an Amiibo along that suits their playstyle. Nintendo plans to have more games that'll connect with Amiibos, and will release more in the future. So far, there's Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8, Yoshi's Wooly World, Mario Party 10, and Capt. Toad Treasure Tracker announced to work with Amiibos. They plan to have it connect to the 3DS too, but later in the future.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The thing that leaves a lot of people disillusioned to the whole thing is that there's no reason why they couldn't put that feature in there without the need to have the Amiibo. I mean seriously, the Amiibo doesn't actually do anything... it just tells the game that you have the thing, and the character is already in the game and completely playable without it so why can't they make this profile without one? It's an unnecessary barrier.

It feels completely different to something like Skylanders where as I understand it, you can't use the character period if you don't have the figurine, which gives it a completely different feel because it gives you the illusion that you're transferring the character from the figure to the game. It's pretty much like glorified on-disc DLC but again, it's the illusion at play.

It's expensive as just DLC, and it's expensive just as a figurine. As something that's both of those things... it's not terrible. If these things can only be used with Smash, that would suck. If I can re-use Yoshi for Yoshi's Woolly World and Mario Kart 8, that's not so bad as the value of the one figure is increased, but by the same token that makes some figures wildly more useful than others simply because of how many games they appear in. For instance I can pretty much guarantee that this is the only game I'll be able to use a Little Mac Amiibo on unless they decide to do another Punch Out game, versus the Mario Amiibo which I might be able to use on way more than just Smash... thus their value at retail shouldn't be the same.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The advantage of having the Amiibo is being able to bring your tweaked character to a friend's place to use and level up. You also unlock various in-game items and stuff. I don't know specifics because the game's not out yet, but it's my understanding that you'll get costumes to customize your characters as well as the Mii Fighters (whom get more costumes than any other character, of course). Because we don't have memory cards and the like anymore, this is an alternative to sharing your data, plus more.

Yeah, it seems that Yoshi and Mario have the most value since they have more games to use them for, like Yoshi's Wolly World and whatever new Mario game's bound to come out soon, but I'm sure that Nintendo will go, "Well, we reawakened Little Mac's popularity thanks to Smash; let's make some extra money and make a Punch Out! remake too. Let's also make a Duck Hunt remake for Dunk Hunt Dog even though everyone hates him!" That's not a bad thing at all though because Punch Out and Duck Hunt were great games and should be remade imo. Since a new LoZ is coming out, Link can possibly be used (maybe for extra costumes or something) and Pikachu and the other Pokemon maybe unlock stuff too (maybe Pokedex skins like in Black and White) in Alpha and Omega after an update or two. Who knows? I personally find it fun and may get one; I just don't know which though because, yeah, $13 is a hefty price.

Also, I'm not 100% sure, but I do think some retail for cheaper than others. If not, then *shrug* that sucks for the less popular characters...

Nintendo take my money now dangit, I need to be wealthy to afford all the good gaming going on this year. New 3DS XL, Mario Kart 8 Wii U Bundle and dang near all these Amiibo's oh and Super Smash Bros for both systems, Pokémon AS/OR, Pokémon Art Academy, Hyrule Warriors, Xenoblade Chronicles X, so much good, Nintendo will now once again be at a competitive level with Sony and Microsoft, though in their own way as they were with the Wii and DS.

Let's see, there is this company that is called GamesWorkshop that sell miniatures. A normal model is usually priced from 5-10$ each, a special model can easily reach the 15-30$ mark. And huge models can cost up to 200$ and above. They are all unassembled and unpainted. So if you're into the miniatures collection business then this 13$ isn't much too outrageous. Actually, I think that if GamesWorkshop is selling their stuff at that price then maybe they can learn a thing or two from Nintendo like this one where you can tag a chip or a bar code into a model and use them on a digitalized game board.

At $13 each I'm out I was able to collect skylanders much cheaper through sales and stuff. These needed to be around $8 - $10 to be honest with triple packs for $20.

Avatar image for sanchango

<< LINK REMOVED >> you need to understand that it's not the same. Amiibos are able to be used in different games, with plenty more games to come to support it. Skylanders will be stuck in skylanders, you won't be able to use it on any other game. 13 dollars with multiple games that support it is better than having an expansion and I can't use it in previous games.

Plus, some of those figurines are way better than any skylanders figures i've seen(though this is just subjective)

Avatar image for catsimboy

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah they needed to be priced more competitively and have combo packs especially since they're coming after Skylanders and Amiibos are completely optional. If they lock too much functionality behind Amiibos people will flip their lids.

I wish Nintendo did 3 pack bundles of Amiibos. Maybe down the line...

Avatar image for golemoy

<< LINK REMOVED >> some skylanders go for as little as $5 or even less (yes, new ones), I've even seen 3-packs for less than $10, that makes one figure worth about $3.

Ofcourse some other rare ones may cost well over $30. It depends how much supply/demand there is. But skylanders are around for almost 4 years now, old figures are old. Amiibos are brand spanking new, they will probably eventually drop in price to less than $10 as well (or not, seeing how nintendo hates to drop price on their products).
