Nintendo Working on a "New Kind" of Mario Game

Mario's creator says we'll see "a new kind of Mario in about a year or two."

The Legend of Zelda has seen some big changes with the recently-announced Breath of the Wild, and now it sounds like Mario could have some of his own in the works. In an interview with IGN, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto said that we might see "a new kind of Mario" next E3.

"We're always challenging ourselves to create something new, so hopefully you'll see a new kind of Mario in about a year or two," Miyamoto said. "Maybe next E3 we'll be able to share something."

Miyamoto also talked about how changing Mario is a bit more difficult than Zelda, as the games' more important conventions are "based on approachability and accessibility" for wider audiences. He mentioned that new people who have joined Nintendo have given it the chance to look at Mario "with fresh eyes."

The last platforming Mario game was Super Mario 3D World, which was a sequel of sorts to Super Mario 3D Land. Critic Mark Walton reviewed Super Mario 3D World and said, "[It] is a dazzlingly inventive game that brings the fun in spades, and will leave you grinning like a loon from start to finish." It received a score of 9/10.

Nintendo showed off two new Mario games at E3: Paper Mario: Color Splash and a new Mario Party. You can check out a bunch of the company's announcements through the links below.

Prediction: Open world Mario mixing Minecraft style world and 3D Mario style platforming. They will open up the world much like the new Zelda, but also have the ability to tear down and build like Minecraft or Super Mario Maker.

@jfabs: Yeah, 3D Mario Maker was the first thing that came to my mind too

@inso-maniac: Why would you even accuse GameSpot of lying? The information came from Miyamoto, not GameSpot. Use your brain.

@inso-maniac: Why would it be a completely different genre?

No Mario for Nx launch confirmed!

I would like to see Super Mario RPG 2 Return of the seven stars. A follow up to 1996 Legend of the seven stars. A Nintendo NX launch title. But that is unlikely.

Seems that Nintendo knows that Mario is losing luster. A reboot or reimaging of sorts.

So we've had platformers, action adventure, fighting games, survival horror, racing games, RPGs, sports games, puzzle games, Minecraft, even a first person rail shooter (with the super scope!)

A new kind of Mario game...? Does that mean they're making a Mario RTS? 4K strategy maybe?

@Thanatos2k: He probably meant something new like Sunshine/Galaxy/3D. You know, the main series.

There have never been Mario fighting games.

@93BlackHawk93: Smash Brothers

Avatar image for 93BlackHawk93

@Thanatos2k: Not a Mario game.

@93BlackHawk93: Mario appears first and foremost. It would be like saying Mario Kart 8 isn't a Mario game because Link is in it.

Avatar image for 93BlackHawk93

@Thanatos2k: SSB started as a crossover franchise and MK as a Mario spinoff, and they are advertised as such. It's only until now that MK started adding different characters, while Mario still covers 90% of the content but not even half of SSB's. Why? Because SSB is a crossover first and foremost.

Might as well call SSB a Pokemon game. Heck, even a Fire Emblem one at this point.

@93BlackHawk93: So now Mario Kart is a mario "spinoff" despite having nothing to do with Mario platforming games, but Smash Brother isn't.

....Whatever dude. Might as well call Mario 2 a Mario game too.

@93BlackHawk93: Yes. Did you think that what you wrote somehow proved your point?

Avatar image for 93BlackHawk93
93BlackHawk93

@Thanatos2k: Do you know that SSB is not even acknowledged as a Mario game by Nintendo? Do you know it's not advertised as a Mario game? That's because SSB is not dedicated to one IP in particular, unlike MK.

Fine; SSB is a Mario game, a Zelda game, a Metroid game, a DK game, a Pokemon game, a Kirby game, a Fire Emblem game, an F-Zero game, a Xenoblade game, etc. It's everyone's game.

I liked nsmw and galaxy 1&2 but I hope they go back to the more exploration oriented 3d Mario of 64/sunshine.

Well better enjoy it before Miyamoto retired, after all he's the only reason the Super Mario series is still good. Once he's gone future Super Mario games will only be in name instead of quality.

Dear Nintendo...WE GREW UP!!!

lol

@louixiii: :) The Wii's success was a curse, stuck Nintendo in one way of thinking, about only one market.

Avatar image for louixiii

@hystavito: The 64 wasn't exactly a big hit and neither was the Gamecube which is one of my favorite consoles of all time. Nintendo f**ked up by adopting a closed minded mentality. Thinking that they don't need third party support to thrive screwed them.

Avatar image for Gravity_Slave

@hystavito: the Wii's success was all front end. Once people got bored of the gimmick, they lost interest. Most people never got past Wii Sports. No one was buying games.

Avatar image for deactivated-5ae060efb3bf6

@Gravity_Slave: Not to mention the non gamer market that bought into the gimmick - such as nursing homes and VFW's. I was on a northern European Cruise last year and they even had the Wii hooked up to big screen TV in one of the little bars on the ship. Strange stuff and markets for a game system for sure.

Avatar image for Gravity_Slave
Gravity_Slave

@Triton: yup. I know a lot of non-gamers that bought one. Most are in a drawer collecting dust.

Avatar image for Nev3rtime
Nev3rtime

@Gravity_Slave: Many people keep repeating that line but the wii shifted a lot of games early on. In the end the average number of games sold per console was pretty typical for a console.

The completely over the top level of piracy was a major factor for the limited investment in games towards the end of it's life.

Avatar image for Gravity_Slave
Gravity_Slave

@Nev3rtime: lol shifted what games? Most people who bought the Wii weren't even casual gamers, they were yuppies buying it as a goof.

In the end (which came early for the Wii) it's game sales were abismal. The Wii was left out of 98% of the Triple A titles. And as far as piracy, that doesn't really factor with consoles, mainly PC. Not sure where you were going with that.

Avatar image for Nev3rtime
Nev3rtime

@Gravity_Slave: Yes. it shifted games. It got press about how it was even sold to grannys and retirement homes but that was a tiny minority of wii's sold. Kids were the primary audience.

Avatar image for hystavito
hystavito

@Nev3rtime: Was that really a major factor? I feel like if you told most Wii owners that bit about piracy, they'd think shipments getting stolen off the coast of Somalia or something :).

Avatar image for Nev3rtime

@hystavito: Along with lack of hd... Then again the very low price was probably a huge factor for its initial success.

Saying its a "new kind of Mario!" Is like saying its a new kind of Tyler Perry movie.

Avatar image for putaspongeon

@Gravity_Slave: There have been plenty of types of mario games, no idea what you're talking about.

Avatar image for Gravity_Slave

@putaspongeon:

Humm I don't have puppets or a picture book to help you figure it out. Anywho, There have been plenty of types of Tyler Perry movies (Google Netflix if you've been living in a cave).

So different movie, more Tyler Perry, Different game, still more of the same Mario. Every time. Hence my point. Simple.

Take aspirin for the headache.

Avatar image for putaspongeon

@Gravity_Slave: Except when I say different types, mario has gone from overview of map 3d couch co op platformer to racing game to board game with mini games to tennis to 2d to behindt the shoulder single player focused to everything else.

Seriously, mario games have some games that are similar but they do have giant divergances in game genre/gameplay.
