Nintendo Wii U could get Mario Kart AND Smash Bros. by next spring

Nintendo Germany boss suggests both Mario Kart 8 and the new Smash Bros. are on the way for next spring; company declines to comment.

The Internet is buzzing today with speculation about the release dates for a pair of high-profile Wii U games after Nintendo Germany general manager Bernd Fakesch was quoted by Neckar-Chronik as saying Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. are to be released this spring.

We already knew Mario Kart 8 was planned for spring 2014, but the date is new for the Super Smash Bros. title, which will also see release on 3DS. We reached out to the Mario maker for comment on the story, but were told, "Nintendo has nothing to announce at this time."

According to Fakesch, the spring 2014 date for the new Smash Bros. game pertains only to the Wii U version, not the 3DS iteration.

The Mario Kart and Smash Bros. franchises are two of Nintendo's biggest properties. Last generation, Mario Kart Wii was the top-selling non-bundled Wii software, moving 34.26 million copies. Meanwhile, Super Smash Bros. Brawl sold 11.49 million copies, making it the system's eight-biggest game.

Both franchises are generally seen as system-movers. And releasing both heavy-hitters during the same quarter would conceivably give the Wii U platform the shot in the arm it will need to help the console sell 9 million units by the end of March as Nintendo has previously forecast.

Mario Kart 8 was playable at E3 2013 and Nintendo has released numerous gameplay videos for the upcoming racing game. However, the developer has been far less forthcoming for the new Smash Bros. game.

While we have seen a few cinematic trailers, Nintendo has yet to reveal any gameplay from the project outside of a video demonstration from E3 2013. The new Smash Bros. game is currently in development at Sora Ltd. in partnership with SoulCalibur series studio Namco Bandai.

And that's probably the ultimate reason I might pass on this game. The GC controller is the only controller I can use with that series.

That controller from two generations ago was basically made for this series and has been used almost exclusively for this series (tournaments, random play etc.) for over a decade so excuse me if I'm not too excited about the change. So go to hell and stay there.

those games will kick the wiiu out of the shelves, 35-40M people bought mario kart in the last 5 years, 12M bought Smash bros for Wii.

Next year starts with DKCTF (DKCR sold 6M on wii) and i would expect mario kart a bit earlier then smash bros. - mario kart in april and smash bros in mai/june.

3 great local multiplayer games, right after SM3DW.

with great games as bayonetta 2, X or a new zelda in the second half of the year the wiiu will see pretty much great games including a lot a must have games for nintendo consoles.

i play nearly all kinds of games, own a gaming PC, PS3, X360, 3DS and now WiiU and the WiiU looks to be the most promising system for the next year.

There dont seem to be much exclusives on the other consoles and by far not as good as those on the wiiu, most of the multiplatform titles are comin to PC too, or PS3/X360 so why buy a PS4/X1 now.

The only game yet is MGS5 but i hope a PC Version will be close to the console release date.

My first step would be to buy a new graphcis card next year to have better PC graphics then new consoles and much more games to play on it, including most emulation of most consoles and many easy to get games, all kind of indie titles and all options and features i want on ONE system, not like the lame Xone which i would just buy for some halo games like it did with the x360.

Nintendo simply have to sell more consoles in the next time, theres no way that 30-40M people enjoyed the last gens nintendo systems and the great nintendo exclusives but wont pick up a wiiu for all those great games and houndres or thousend of hours of great gameplay and the best local multiplayer expierences in 2014.

All nintendo games comin in 2014 are potentially system sellers, while we saw only 1 with SM3DW in this year - even games like bayonetta or X will be it as they are much different from the nintendo stuff and both are looking great :-) Some HD Remakes could help too ...

Those of us who have friends are eagerly awaiting these titles.

The Wii U is the only good multiplayer console on the market. These are two of the top local multiplayer games.

If you only play video games by yourself or online, you're doing it wrong. ;)

Just don't rush anything Nintendo. I know we have been pushing you guys for content but don't put something out that isn't complete. You always give quality content with very few problems (they don't have problems don't get me wrong) which is why we love you guys and continue to support. I want Smash Bros as much as the next guy but only if it is ready.

To little to late? They are both strong franchises but if the new Mario game could barely move Nintendo Wii U Consoles, I doubt these two games will as well. Also, unlike the Mario game, both franchises bring very little new to the table. It'll pretty much be the same game as before with a few new mechanics, characters & better graphics. Whoever wanted a Wii U platform already owns one. A lot of gamers are on the fence still about the Wii U & with the PS4 & Xbox One now available, it gives them less reason to go out & purchase one.

You pretty much described almost every new entry of almost every established franchise, so by that logic, no other new entry to any franchise should sell because many of them don't even take it this far, usually it's just "better graphics with slightly tweaked gameplay."

Also new mechanics and physics is enough with Smash considering it's a fighting game. It's why both Brawl and Melee (even the original on occasion) are still being played at tournaments.

What you say is true but this is a totally different situation for Nintendo. Wii Owners got burned. Well deserving since I never felt that platform lived up anywhere near the hype it received. Most were not going to let that happen again without some good third party exclusive games being on the Wii U. A majority of Nintendos first party games have been so similar & lack luster. Zelda & 3D Mario games are the only reason to bother with the system since they are bring something new to the franchises. Metroid as well for that matter. I've enjoyed both franchises over the years but I feel the same that many people do now, there is really not much to them. Yes, other games do the same but other games also implement a whole lot more content with each new game while Mario Kart & SMB has done very little of that. They also extend the lives of some of those games with DLC. Nintendo does not.

I do know that numerous SMB games are played at tournaments & LANS. I go to plenty of them here in NYC. With the exception of the ones at Nintendo World. In my circle of friends though, we call that the kiddie corner :P. Since most of us are Virtua Fighter & Tekken guys.

The only Wii owners who got "burned" are those who allowed themselves. I had an absolute blast with the Wii and found a great deal of games (both 1st and 3rd party) on the system. It should've been obvious that the system was going to get a unique set of games compared to the 360/PS3 and those who believed they'd be getting the same experience and set of games as the other 2 consoles are frankly dumb for thinking so for obvious reasons.

The Wii U is getting pretty good 3rd party exclusives, the only thing is that it's not the same type of 3rd party exclusives that Sony/Microsoft get. The funny thing is that these people complain and criticize Nintendo for it, yet when the 3rd party games they ask for come out, they refuse to buy it.

I fail to see how majority of Nintendo's 1st party games are so similar and lackluster considering almost every new entry reinvents itself in some way yet maintains the high quality that each franchise is known for. The only "lackluster" 1st party titles I could think of are the party type or "Wii"-titled games, everything else from Donkey Kong, Kirby, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Pushmo, Pokemon, Luigi's Mansion along with Mario and Zelda have consistently remained high quality and proof to the industry that very powerful consoles aren't required to make amazing games. Also did you seriously just use DLC against Nintendo? Yes when DLC is truly used to extend a game's life, it's awesome, problem is is that that's the exception, not the rule nowadays. Plus Nintendo does use DLC, and when they do, it's always an option (not "Oh you want to find out this part of the storyline that we forgot to cover?") and almost always costs fairly cheap (unlike $15-$20 for maps or an extra 1-2 hours of gameplay). The fact that games like Smash Brothers, MarioKart, Super Mario, Zelda, Fire Emblem, Pokemon can be played consistently for years without ever needing DLC speaks volumes to the effort and design that Nintendo puts into their games.

MarioKart consistently changes up the tracks as well as shifts the mechanics to either add more depth and change up the gameplay (and the way retro tracks play out) while Smash Brothers adds more characters, changes up the physics so that the characters play differently than previous titles (it's why characters like Fox and Captain Falcon, while fundamentally play the same way as they did in Melee are significantly worse in Brawl) as well as always including a substantial amount of single player content (something most fighters lack).

Why is it the "kiddie corner?" That just makes you sound like you think you're above those who play Smash, even though the amount of skill required to play Melee and even Brawl is just as much as the skill required to competitively play Virtua Fighter and Tekken.

Nintendo is becoming ten times worse then activision. Bringing out the same copy and pasted games over and over again. What makes it worse is that they are doing it with more then just one franchise. Ex. Mario, Mario Kart, Smash bros, exc I remember when i got a kick out of mario 64 and it was because it was totally new and different open world mario, with new game mechanics. Now its just 2d mario after 2d mario, and a little 3d just changing the camera angle.

@Albelnox0 Nintendo release one mario kart per console. One smash bros per console.

Unlike, well, uncharted, batman arkham, assassin's creed (there are as many assassin's creeds on the PS3 as there are mario karts since 1990), mass effect, bioshock, need for speed, little big planet, halo, fifa... if releasing one game of a franchise per console is milking, I cant even imagine what those other franchises are doing.

There are 7 mario karts since 1990 and there are 7 assassin's creed on ps3 since 2007. There is a difference here, dude. There is 3 smash bros since 1998, one on each different console. There are three uncharted on ps3 and one on vita. See the difference?

And I can say the same thing for all the other nintendo franchises.

Same with zelda, there were one on the wii, two on the game cube (twilight princess is counted as one game since its on the wii too but was made for the gamecube), one on snes, two on n64, thats nothing compared to the milking of franchises nowadays. Remakes doesnt count by the way because ps3 and xbox has a lot of HD remakes of things.

And releasing more of a franchise is not neccessarily bad, there are games that are released a lot that are good, and there are the ones that are just re released to use the same engine before it gets old, or because it is easy to do, or because it is popular so corporations take advantage of the consumers who would buy anything.

I bet you are going to say that fighting games like smash bros, party games like mario party, kart games like mario kart... Are the same game or the same franchise... Sigh.

Like, Mario tennis, dude, Mario tennis... Is a tennis game, with the mario character. It could be ANY character in his place and you would say its a totally different game, it just happens to be a mario skin.

<< LINK REMOVED >>at least valve hasn't relied on half life to carry them through success. At least Sony hasn't relied on crash bandicoot to carry them through success, at least xbox one is bringing out new IPs. And thats the thing Sony and Microsoft keep bringing out new IPs. There not afraid to do it unlike nintendo who's been stuck with 2d mario games and in the past. One of the reasons N64 was so successful was because of all the great IPs it had (Turok, Dark Rift, Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Shadow of the Empire, F Zero) exc. Compare that with now, all you have now is Mario, Pokemon, Zelda.

They could make a new star fox game, f-zero game but no. They keep making these cheap carbon copy and paste 2d mario games. One titled "3D" mario world when its really just the same 2d side scroller just with the camera angle fixed in different position.

I'm not saying that smach bros and mario kart are the same game. What im saying is this. Enough with the mario please nintendo, show us that its not Rare who carried you through success during the snes and N64 days, Show us that mario is not the only character that's carrying through sucess. Show us you can make another Star Fox game, another F zero game, metroid game. Show us you can make another Mario game open world and crazy like Mario 64, show us that you can make another awesome mario game like mario RPG.

So long as every new entry to their franchises NEVER completely overshadows the previous entry and renders it obsolete (something that Call of Duty and Skylanders does), they will never be anywhere close to being like Activison.

Also they don't exploit gamers with DLC, none of their franchises has been released annually for more than 5 years in a row, and considering that the both the critical average and user average of theirs games remain consistently high (user reviews for Activison's games have fallen tremendously) shows that the community does not in any way share your opinion, and thank goodness because it's an ignorant one.

What I'm saying is not "opinion" its the truth. Stop using the opinion excuse you know very well that nintendo has much more to offer, but there to scared to do anything about it, if you can't except your failures then you won't move on and learn to do things right. @eelektrik@Albelnox0 so you guys want more mario? You don't want a new star fox game? Heck even nintendo making new IPs? You guys are letting your fanboyism blind you. Meanwhile they make a buck off you with quick to make copy and paste mario games. A reminder that they don't even want to port over games that fans want. Do you guys want to see new ips or what? Heck do you guys want to see an Earth bound 2 or remake one day? Do you guys even want a new F-zero?

I would love to see new IP, or a new F-Zero, Star Fox, Metroid. I would like to see Camelot make a console version of Golden Sun as well. Or Nintendo could even bring back Star Tropics or Earthbound. Metroid is easily my favorite franchise of Nintendo though.

I never said I wanted more Mario, I haven't even played 3D World yet, but exaggerating over how often Nintendo releases games in their various game series doesn't help back up your assertion that they are ten times worse than Activision. Mario Kart and Smash Bros, two series you claimed were also being pumped out too often, have never had more than one game released on the same platform and Smash Bros. is just now getting its first handheld version. If they were so quick to make copy and paste games, why aren't they being annualized like some franchises from other companies?

@eelektrik @Albelnox0 Yeah I guess you must have. Statistical fact: There was only 1 Call of Duty game (CoD Ghosts) released in 2013. In that same time span, there were 7 new Mario games. (Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, Mario and DK: Minis on the Move, New Super Luigi U, Super Mario 3D World, Mario & Sonic at the 2014 Winter Olympics, and Mario Party: Island Tour. )

10x worse may have been an exaggeration. 7x worse is more accurate.

But surely that's just a fluke right? Let's try 2012.

CoD: 2 (Black Ops 2 and Declassified)

Mario: 6 (Mario & Sonic at the London Olympics, Mario Party 9, Mario Tennis Open, New Super Mario Bros 2, Paper Mario: Sticker Saga, and New Super Mario Bros U)

That's 13 Mario games in 2 years. I hate Activision as much as the next guy, but seriously, Nintendo is no better. They have driven the Mario franchise into the ground.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You just listed 6 different franchises and DLC to a game from last year. Have you played any of those? They are all separate series with different gameplay structures that just happen to share the same lead character. Nintendo has never released sequels to the same game series 9 years in a row like Activision has with Call of Duty and doesn't look likely to stop at 9 either..

Mario as a character gets a lot of releases, Mario as a game franchise gets significantly less. In the 9 years that Activision has released 9 console Call of Duty titles from Call of Duty 2 at the Xbox 360 launch to Call of Duty Ghosts this year, Nintendo has released 5 console Mario games, three of which were 3d platformers(Super Mario Galaxy, Galaxy 2, and 3D World) and two 2d platformers(New Super Mario Bros. Wii and U).
