The Internet is buzzing today with speculation about the release dates for a pair of high-profile Wii U games after Nintendo Germany general manager Bernd Fakesch was quoted by Neckar-Chronik as saying Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. are to be released this spring.

We already knew Mario Kart 8 was planned for spring 2014, but the date is new for the Super Smash Bros. title, which will also see release on 3DS. We reached out to the Mario maker for comment on the story, but were told, "Nintendo has nothing to announce at this time."

According to Fakesch, the spring 2014 date for the new Smash Bros. game pertains only to the Wii U version, not the 3DS iteration.

The Mario Kart and Smash Bros. franchises are two of Nintendo's biggest properties. Last generation, Mario Kart Wii was the top-selling non-bundled Wii software, moving 34.26 million copies. Meanwhile, Super Smash Bros. Brawl sold 11.49 million copies, making it the system's eight-biggest game.

Both franchises are generally seen as system-movers. And releasing both heavy-hitters during the same quarter would conceivably give the Wii U platform the shot in the arm it will need to help the console sell 9 million units by the end of March as Nintendo has previously forecast.

Mario Kart 8 was playable at E3 2013 and Nintendo has released numerous gameplay videos for the upcoming racing game. However, the developer has been far less forthcoming for the new Smash Bros. game.

While we have seen a few cinematic trailers, Nintendo has yet to reveal any gameplay from the project outside of a video demonstration from E3 2013. The new Smash Bros. game is currently in development at Sora Ltd. in partnership with SoulCalibur series studio Namco Bandai.

It doesn't matter whether it's your fifth language or your twentieth. And is this another cry for validation? Your point is irrelevant.

And no, they can't. To be diagnosed as a schizoid is to have absolutely no interest whatsoever in maintaining relationships simply because they don't see the point. The schizotypal diagnosis is associated with perceptual distortions and paranoia, and is more akin to that of a phobia of people. To be both is to have contradicting motives. Maybe if you added multiple personality disorder, it might be slightly plausible.

I like how you avoid every other point the commenters and I have made and focus on the single topic that allows you to flaunt yourself. What are you trying to prove?

So, when he's saying "The Wii U is like that sad ,short, smart ,crazy, pathetic kid with an alcoholic dad that nobody likes to speak to" he's actually talking about himself? Funny how some people are so transparent. But what can we do? If trolling and bragging on the internet makes he feel better about himself, who are we to deny him that? I mean, he probably need it as a coping mechanism.

Being 15 is not an excuse for being prejudice, pompous, and a flat out a**hole. I work with students at a middle school and I've never come across kids like that, sure some may be ignorant, some may be prejudice and some may be a**holes, but I haven't met one that was all 3.

He's been clearly pampered and consistently placed in the spotlight considering how he feels the need to advertise how "above" he is compared to us, but like you said, when reality hits him, if this disgusting attitude remains, he has a hard life ahead of himself.

The simple fact that you cannot distinguish fact from opinion pretty much showcases where your mentality is and guess what? It's no where close to what you believe it is.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I don't need to prove my mathematical skills to an everyday fool on the Internet. The problem, by the way, was presented in one of my Calculus IV lectures. Like I said, your cries for validation aren't impressing anyone.

And your last sentence is so full of baseless assumptions that I can't even take it seriously as an insult. Try harder, buddy. You're never going to hit it where it hurts with weaksauce like that.

Now, as I understand it, you are only 15. Your brain hasn't even finished developing yet, so I can forgive whatever thought patterns you're going through at the moment. However, when the times comes, you're going to have to grow up and examine yourself and your attitude. Might be tomorrow, might be 20 years from now. But I guarantee you that if you accept your persona as it is right now, you're going to have a very sad life ahead of you.

That said, I sincerely hope you have a nice day. And a nice month, year, and life, for your sake.

Oh, and you spelled schizoid and schizotypal wrong. Not to mention being both a schizoid and being schizotypal is somewhat of a contradiction. Just thought I'd point that out.

Pulling out the second language card, are we? And yes, I saw all those edits.

You aren't impressing anyone with your cries for validation.

And even I can tell that's not what it means without looking it up. I can't tell if you're actually trying to fool me, or bait me into something.

I also like how you immediately assumed I wouldn't understand Spanish.

@maniacalpoet @KoRLumen You sound like an insecure teen who can't comprehend anything even remotely removed from superficiality.

And to emphasize matters, you couldn't be further from the truth.

@maniacalpoet @KoRLumen Nah, it's just that your comments pissed a lot of people off, including former lurkers like myself.

And for such an intelligent person, you'd think you'd be able to discern your own (albeit popular) opinion from irrefutable fact. I don't deny your intelligence, but you lack the experience and maturity to be responsible for it. For now, and probably for a very long time, you'll just be a typical teen with insecurity issues.

There was, in fact, no need. Just as there is no need for me to be replying to your comments, but I do so anyway. Why? Simple.

You sadden me.

That's good. I might pick up a Wii U after these games come out. I have a question for Wii U owners... how's the online multiplayer experience? I don't expect it to be as good as PC or the other consoles, but there should definitely be an improvement over the Wii. The reason I ask is because these two games are great for multiplayer and I'd like to be able to play them online like with every other multiplayer game nowadays.

Avatar image for Jordon_p

@JLCrogue The online multiplayer is about the same as the PS3. You make a nintendo ID when you set up the system, this is your online name. Your Mii is your avatar in games. Voice chat is up to the developers to add to their game, though I think Nintendo provides an API, you can use the microphone + speakers in the gamepad for voice chat, or any 3.5mm headset. The real issue is there isn't a lot of games that even have online multiplayer, but I believe it is already confirmed for both these games. I don't play a lot of online, but when I tried it, I did not notice any lag issues, but I do have a fast connection.

Well this is great news when it happens...but it still won't mean I'll have the money to buy the system at that point...frickin economy man. UGH.

So in other words, the Wii U will have Mario Kart and Smash Bros. around November or so.

'Both franchises are generally seen as system-movers.'

I can't speak for anyone else, but unless it's a new Zelda or Metroid game, I'm not going to consider buying a console just to play it.

Mario Kart and Smash Brothers may have been the best selling Wii games, but all those tens of millions of casual gamers who bought Wii's in the first couple of years were buying the novelty of the Wii-mote.

Avatar image for jimbothef

I'd say they're still system sellers. No, the Wii U isn't all of a sudden going to sell a zillion consoles like the Wii, but it certainly has a chance to help a bit.

Avatar image for rarerichz

they are better games, its not about being a system seller moron.

Considering the Wii U isn't selling...it kind of IS about being a system seller.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Super mario 3D world was my system seller, whats yours? I know I will enjoy the future LOZ,DK tropical freeze, Mario Kart, Smash, metroid, star fox if theres one and mostly every first party titles Nintendo will put out so why should I have waited anyway. Theyre much more reliable than the cheap, microtransaction boxes that are MS/Sonys consoles.
