Nintendo: We Can't Deny Ubiquity of Smartphones

"We feel it's going to be an additive to our console business."

Nintendo of America executive Scott Moffitt has spoken out to share more details about the company's head-turning announcement in March that it was getting into the smartphone gaming business.

No Caption Provided

The company's long-stated stance was to release games only for its own platforms, but that's changing this year when Nintendo releases the first of its smartphone games through a partnership with DeNA.

Moffitt explained that Nintendo simply could not look past the ubiquity of smartdevices today. Not only that, but he said Nintendo hopes to draw in new gamers who may eventually decide to buy a home console.

"We can't deny the massive install base of smartphones out there, and some fans that aren't old enough yet to afford their own gaming console, perhaps for those consumers they can start to appreciate some of our content and build a relationship with some of our characters and our franchises," he told Examiner. "We feel it's going to be an additive to our console business."

Moffitt also stressed, as other executives have done before him, that Nintendo getting into the smartphone business should not be taken as a sign that the company is moving away from home console games. In fact, the reason Nintendo announced its next system, codenamed the NX, on the same day as it revealed its smartphone plans, was to demonstrate that Nintendo remains committed to home consoles.

"Normally, we wouldn't have taken that step of telling people we are working on the next system, but we wanted people to know we remain committed to the dedicated game device business," he said.

Also in the interview, Moffitt said the community reaction to Nintendo's smartphone plans has been "very enthusiastic." He also noted that investors are happy as well, considering Nintendo's stock price skyrocketed after the news was announced.

Finally, Moffitt reiterated that Nintendo has no plans to port its console games to mobile devices. Instead, Nintendo--under the direction of a veteran Mario Kart producer--will develop brand new games for mobiles.

"[Mobile and console] are two different types of gaming experiences and I don't think the approach we'll take is to just port existing content over to the mobile," he said. "That really wouldn't be doing justice to those devices and to that experience. It's a different kind of gameplay."

For more, be sure to read Examiner's full interview.

Fantastic - Pay to win Mario.

You get the first 100 'jumps' for free then it is one 'gem' per jump afterwards.

Nintendo are always the last to get aboard the sinking ships.

Nintendo; free business advice.. maybe try creating some new ip's? How long can they possibly milk the same characters, another 30 years?

@kalibore: splatoon is an old ip? Or your definition of a new ip is a sandbox full of blood? Or a fps?

@elnigu10: Most people define new IP as IP that is new. Sandbox and fps are genres... Splatoon is, what, only the third new first-party IP in 3 years on Wii U?

Nintendo really likes to dig that hole they're in. It's like they're saying

"we know there's THIS problem (smartphones and tablets) but we're just gonna keep shooting ourselves in the foot with more antiquated hardware, especially in the form of handhelds."

Eventually there wont be a need for consoles or desktops. You'll keep your super computer in your pocket and just access it in the way you need for any specific application. A monitor/keyboard/mouse for desktop computing, a monitor/joystick for gaming....so forth. This has been known for a while and it's already starting to happen. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo jumped on this now so they would be able to develop and move along with it.

@jemlay:

Lol what has been known? Handhelds (whether a smartphone, tablet or handheld gaming system) will not replace consoles and other home units. At least not this century. There is no statistic or trend to support your opinion.

@lithus: most current smartphones are more powerful than 40% of current PCs in the market. You can BS all you want, you can't change reality. Current quad core mobile devices can fly circles around the millions on top of millions of older dual core desktops (and even older) currently being used. Not this century? LOL, you have a lot to learn.

@jemlay: Cost of Smartphone > $500. Cost of CPU more powerful than said smartphone <$50. Your statement is BS unless you're comparing to 10 yr Old PCs and even I wouldn't believe it. Remember an E8400 is 7 years old now. That would destroy ANY current smartphone.

@yogibbear: LOL at comparing an entire mobile device to a single CPU. Clearly you are clueless to what machines are still in use.

--thats stupid
--they are wrong
--if smart devices were a hindrance to nintendo
--then HOW IN THE HELL did they sell 53 million 3dses?(simple~AWESOME games)

--wiiU failed because nintendo got WAY TOO overconfident after the wii's HUGE sales numbers
--but
--if they hadda studied wii
--they would have noticed NO ONE was 'playing it' anymore
--everyone was playing 360 and ps3
--so
--what did that mean for wiiU?
--it meant it needed to be something more like 360 and ps3(like xb1 and ps4 are)
--what did they give us instead?
--a wii(literally)
--with a little more horsepower(not enough however to do 8th gen multiplats~coffin nail 1)
--and a weirdo dual screen console(sure DS works great for mobile~but it was a STUPID idea for a home console)
--nintendo gave us a secondary console(and tried to pass it off as a first choice~they confused consumers)
--wiiU deserves a seat beside any xb1 or ps4
--but its a secondary console(it simpley cannot hang with xb1 and ps4)
--and it should be priced as one
--at no more than 150$(thats why wiiU isnt selling~its WAY overpriced)

Better late than never they always say. If Nintendo plays its cards right, then they might actually do fairly well in the mobile business. Nobody will pay $40 for an iPhone/iPad game up front; however if Nintendo were to offer titles like Zelda, Mario Kart, and so on as F2P releases, they might be successful by allowing users to pay $10 at a time for DLC in form of new maps, tracks, playable characters, quests, etc. They've already seen how successful DLC can be when they first offered it with Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U.

As it stands, I'm convinced Nintendo has already lost tens of millions, if not hundreds of millions of dollars by staying out of the mobile market for as long as they have. They always insist on making their own hardware. So just make a Nintendo brand controller compatible with the two iPhone sizes, and the iPad models. Then start rolling out classic Nintendo IPs on the most successful gaming platform of all time (queue music of Link opening a chest).

I need more substance in my games, not $0.99 smartphone mental masturbation. If Nintendo is seriously considering this route, they will not survive.

@parabol69: Tell me where in my comment you took that idea from or gtfo.

The "they will not survive" was just typical ridiculous hating.... they will not survive because they decided to release some mobile games? Yeah, sure, truly, nobody who goes mobile survives, that is why Nintendo is currently the only game maker alive, since everybody else has already gone mobile ages ago and died.

Just. Typical. Stupid. Hating.

Now, don't even waste your time trying, just gtfo already and have a nice day.

nintendo has done a complete 360... why you ask? well, when shareholders begin pulling out and stock prices go down, nintendo has no choice but to react and correct their misguided vision. nintendo is one of the most two faced companies out there but at least they are on the right track now. there may still be hope regarding their upcoming platform. i wish them luck.

I've retired my WiiU until the games show up in bargain bins. I can't justify spending new release prices for their software with so many features and quality absent. Splatoon, I'm looking at you especially.

NX better be the next coming of Christ if they want my money for hardware again.

@ignisnobueno: Wrong again, again. I can take you to about 3 flea markets in my area where you can find Wii games of all degrees for about 5 bucks or 2 for 5. I just bought Twilight Princess and Ghost Recon for 5 bucks last week.

No retailer sells new Wii games in my area.

@Sevenizz: okay well that makes sense. If it's not a major retailer that's understandable. But come on man how are you going to compare the flea market to actual corporate stores where the games are easily accessible. That's like me saying I just found blood born for 20 bucks on Craigslist because someone decided to get rid of it for so cheap.
