Nintendo wanted to shut down EVO Super Smash Tournament

Huh... interesting... not gonna make me watch those tournaments though. Probably no items and all Fox players, completely ruining the innovative and fun nature of the game...

Nintendo are not very smart people. They should be grateful that EVO was promoting their game at all, because it isn't EVO material really. It's too unbalanced for competitive play.

Nintendo likes being aware of what people are doing with their IPs, such as streaming a big even like EVO. Nintendo didn't give their consent at first so they were upset and unsure of the situation. However, once everything was cleared and they were in the know, they gave their consent.

I can completely understand what they're coming from. People like being in the know, they want to make sure they understand what's going on, especially if personal property is involved. I won't say they were in the right by preventing the streaming or wanting to ban the event, but it was justified in a way.

Why would they block streaming of some1 playing their game?! Isn't it free publicity?

I feel i'm missing some information here cos the story doesn't make logical sense atm.

@Vodoo It was Nintendo of AMERICA who tried to block EVO. Specifically, their legal department.

At some point, I have a feeling the ESA will be trying to lobby for some kind of legal BS to bring these tournaments under more control of the publishers. As much as I love the idea of eSports (maybe), you can't keep doing something like this without the people who make the games wanting to get a slice.

Free press for one of your IP's and you wanted to shut it down. Good job Nintendo.

Nintendo management needs to be fired ASAP, this is just further proof that those in charge of the company are completely out of touch with their customer base and the gamer community in general.

They did it because Brawl and that new SSB game are their flagship titles and they want gamers to move on. Purely a business decision.

They're just mad that people liked Melee more... also because they're being brats. If someone is mass producing bootleg copies of your game, please, do something about it. But when all the people that supported your game want to have a tournament on the biggest stage for fighting games, be happy. Especially since I'm sure a LOT of people are still frowning saying that Smash is just a party game and doesn't belong there. This is a great opportunity... but you know, be pricks and say "NO, that's OUR game and you can't broadcast it... OR have the tournament!"

Careful Nintendo, you don't want to be the new "F*** EA!" or XBONE! We want to love you but... this is a great way to ensure we don't.

I really dont get banning public content of video games. Its free god damn advertising. If your really that concerned about people making a profit for it, do it yourself.

I'm thinking that Nintendo's legal team tries to stop anyone from using Nintendo's intellectual property without consent. Once the PR team takes a look at it, they give the legal team the go ahead to okay it. Most of these people that use Nintendo IP might want to just avoid the hassle by contacting Nintendo first. Unless they're using the old adage, "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission." Just like Vanilla Ice back in the day.

Maybe Nintendo tried to pull it because they know SSB is not a fighting game and fans of any other fighting series make fun of SSB fanboys for thinking they can sit at the same table.

not even microsoft does that. They fully support esports and realize its basically free advertisement for their games and systems. Nintendo is really out of touch with the core gamer. More so than even Microsoft. At least they listen.

- poor name for new console

- region locking

-Trying to ban lets play + most other videos involving their games on YOUTUBE

- trying to remove Smash Bros from EVO

I understand that the WiiU is back-words compatible but besides that, Ninentdo seriously needs to get into the modern era

Nintendo should have been happy that the Gamecube Super Smash Bros melee is still being played in a high profile way in 2013. Long after the Gamecube era ended.
