Nintendo TVii Canceled in Europe

Nintendo cancels the Wii U's video streaming and TV feature in Europe.

Nintendo TVii, which attempts to collect several different video streaming services and your existing television channels into one convenient Wii U channel, will not launch in the Europe, Nintendo has announced.

"Due to the extremely complex nature of localising multiple television services across a diverse range of countries with varied licensing systems, regrettably we have taken the decision not to launch the Nintendo TVii service within the European region," Nintendo said. "With this in mind, Nintendo of Europe has launched the Nintendo Anime Channel, a new video-on-demand service on Nintendo 3DS which offers users the chance to stream anime series from the likes of Pokémon, Kirby, and Inazuma Eleven."

Nintendo also said that it will add new content to the Anime Channel regularly, which you can access freely by simply downloading the application from the Nintendo eShop.

In his year two review of the Wii U, GameSpot's Rob Crossley wasn't too impressed with the feature, saying it is "notoriously slow, which outright negates the convenience of turning to it in the first place. Elsewhere, the remote control app, which runs on the GamePad without needing to powering on the console, makes for a nice emergency replacement, but is far too basic to be a true alternative to the TV remote."

Sort of expected but can they remove that icon now? It's pretty silly to have an icon for something that isn't available

On one hand, Nintendo shouldn't waste their time on functions if their heart isn't in it. Either do it well or don't do it at all. But on the gripping hand, Nintendo is increasingly making the case for them becoming a software and accessory company rather than the producer of their own platforms, especially on the console side. They remain competitive on the mobile side as decent inputs for most games are still lacking from devices that are truly mobile. You can pair a Bluetooth gamepad to your phone but support is limited and it isn't very convenient to carry around. The Nintendo mobile platform still qualifies itself.

Not so much on the console side. It's hard to see anything the Wii U provides for Nintendo that couldn't be just as easily done on other platforms from companies better able to cover the full range of features expected today. The one really defining feature of the Wii U, the Gamepad, could just as easily be an accessory for the Sony and Microsoft platforms. Both already have similar approaches with Remote Play to the Vita on the Sony side and SmartGlass on the Microsoft side. But then, nintendo itself hasn't done all that much with the Gamepad, making it a questionable part of the Wii U base configuration instead of a lower cost of entry, as the Wii enjoy and benefited from.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yes. The Gamepad would just as easily be an accessory for the Sony and Microsoft platforms IF they were made by them and for their consoles. I'm so sure Sony and Microsoft would include a gamepad of that size and screen resolution with their consoles and, if they did make a gamepad of that size, can you imagine how much it would cos?. A lot of big "IFs" in your statement. Here's an if for ya. If my Aunt had balls she would be my Uncle. Nintendo cancelled a feature that many weren't interested in anyways. Doesn't mean you have to dissect the entire current Nintendo console handheld and console generation and compare silly apples and oranges to make yourself look smart. Do you even own a Wii U? If not then what are you talking about it for? The Gamepad is awesome because you can play it on the screen while someone else is watching television. That's its biggest asset. No more, no less. And everyone that doesn't know what a Wii U is by now doesn't deserve a Wii U anyways because people who do no research on products before they buy simply do not deserve one of the best consoles of all time. My two cents.

This is no major loss. Nintendo Tvii is a pretty big disappointment. In fact most multimedia apps are pretty pathetic on Wii-U. Nintendo Tvii could of been pretty cool had user communities ever come out for the thing. But it's been two years since they announced those, and still no word.

Having separate communities for shows or even sports teams probably would be of been a pretty cool feature.

This story functions as a perfect example of precisely everything that is currently wrong with nintendo:

No research. Just development. 24 months after an announcement and a few please understands, no less. all this of course after they released a console before they had any idea how hd development worked.

I hate being THAT kind of hater, but as a day one wiiu owner that used to give nintendo the benefit of every doubt, theres no way i'm buying the next nintendo console before i see 12 months of stellar releases and quality third party support...or, at the very least, prices that reflect nintendo's inability to produce anything other than a supplementary device to put next to your worthwhile gaming machines.

Europe is not missing anything. Nintendo TVii is not anything to get upset over. Europe is lucky not to have TVii. This was just another unneeded feature for the Wii U which was meant to try to pull casual consumers towards the Wii U. But it didn't have any real impact.

On a side note, I love the TV remote feature on the game pad. I don't use it often but every once and awhile I'll set myself up, realize I've forgotten the remote, then realize the controller can be used as a remote and I don't have to get up and grab the real remote. I love little details like that.

But yeah, Europe's a different beast than North America is. North America's pretty much just English. If you want to be nice you include French and Spanish in there... but for the most part it's just English. Europe however... you're dealing with English, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Greek, Swedish, Finnish, Russian, Icelandic, Norwegian, Portuguese, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Polish, Irish, Belarusian, Latvian, Estonian, Serbian, Croatian, Montenegrin, Albanian, Maltese... and I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting. It's a giant mess. Sure, not everybody supports all of those languages but you're looking at at least 4-6 typically and that's still a pain. Add to that licensing per country and looking at your install base, they deduced that it simply wasn't worth maintaining. For North America it's just Canada and the US... one language, two licensing systems, and what's probably 90-95% of your customers for that continent. I'm not sure about how Mexico is typically supported. But yeah, Europe's a completely different beast.

Because the Wii U is a flop. Also Nintendo have always been anti-west orientated, the West should just boycott Nintendo.

Welcome to the Grand Illusion.

I'd post the music video from Styx. Somehow I think it'll just be sitting in queue for time indefinite. Until some 19 year old comes along with a hard on for all things old and approves it because Wikipedia tells him truth.

If it wasn't for Better Call Saul and Always Sunny, I wouldn't watch TV at all. This idea's like ten years too late.
