Nintendo's first foray into the gaming figurine business with Amiibo has resulted in some confusion about how long some of the more obscure characters may remain in production. But the company clarified that stance somewhat today, revealing that some Amiibo will eventually be discontinued.

A Nintendo representative told GameSpot: "We will aim for certain amiibo to always be available. These will be for our most popular characters like Mario and Link. Due to shelf space constraints, other figures likely will not return to the market once they have sold through their initial shipment."

While Nintendo doesn't specify which character may not make a return, it's probably safe to say that if you want to pick up Marth, Villager, or the Wii Fit trainer, you should do that sooner rather than later. Pikachu, Link, and Mario, however...those are probably going to be around for a very long time.

In other Amiibo news, a legless Peach figurine that a GameSpot reader sent us images for is currently at over $200 on ebay. And a faulty Samus figurine with two arm cannons recently sold for $2,500.

All they need to do now is drop a platformer/syklanders/disney infinity type game using all the amiibos, past, present and future and they'd have a good thing going.

Now all the speculators are goign to run to their nearest best buys and purchase lots of Wii Fits and Villagers save them and then resell them on ebay or nearly triple the price once they discontinue...smart thing to do .

I don't own a Wii U or anything but these amiibo figures are pretty nice and detailed looking. Good for a collector of gaming related things I might buy a few myself.

Where do you buy these at though?.

I'm not sure how this advertises Amiibo.

1. Put toy on controller.

2. Play Smash Bros.

.............................

Nintendo is so embarrassing now it's getting really sad. To those who say Nintendo isn't aimed at children - every single person in this ad is like under 12. And there's like 8 of them.

*facepalm*

<< LINK REMOVED >> Agreed - and at least two of the kids featured in that ad are WAAAY too old to be playing with toy figurines.

<< LINK REMOVED >> So... How are SONY-Games and others aimed to mature-people, or "Gamers"? I don't see much there, cause there are no people. Does this mean their customers are nothing more than hot air?

Plus: If you search more than one minute you may find children in SONY and MS commercials as well. Just saying.

I just cannot believe they used to be so innovative . Now it just seems the nintendo bag of ideas is empty. Such a shame! I still love Nintendo first party games but will still not be buying anything from them as long as that Wii/ Wii u nightmare is over and something worth comes out.

Seems like and odd choice while it's true that Mario, Link Etc are popular characters, I'm pretty sure that characters like Marth are more popular in the smash community.

This idea doesn't make sense to me. If you want to make as much money as possible you should have a tiered structure and not eliminate some so quickly. They should clarify what they're doing and also tell what they plan to do about things like the insane high cost on amazon.

I hope the ones that are being discontinued come back maybe as a surge for new installments of their respective games or maybe holiday events or something.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think the problem is this: Figures like Mario may be used in future Mario-Games and such. While Marth for example is just for Smash Bros. Unless - of course - he will be in a future Fire Emblem.

Like it's hard to keep making the less popular ones, put them in a warehouse, and sell them through amazon or some site. smh

I don't buy it. Yeah, sure they'll be discontinued eventually, but I doubt with how much demand there is for these things, especially for harder to find ones. There is a lot of money to be made with these and there is no doubt Nintendo is going to cash in as long as possible on each and every one of these.

Supposedly, this article and many like it have been said to be false. There will be no discontinuation, but there are are shortages in supply for some characters (like Marth and Villager)
