Japanese newspaper Nikkei is reporting today that Nintendo will cease production of the Wii U by the end of 2016, presumably switching to manufacturing for the mysterious NX system. Nikkei, which has accurately reported news about Nintendo's unannounced plans before, says Nintendo is ending production on Wii U hardware so soon due to the console's slow sales, which are not expected to improve.

The report, translated by GameSpot and DualShockers, does not contain any details on when the NX will launch or when Nintendo plans to stop selling Wii U hardware to consumers.

No Caption Provided

A newly substantiated rumor suggests the NX--believed to be a console/mobile hybrid that uses "industry-leading" tech--will launch later this year. It has also been reported that the new Legend of Zelda game for Wii U may also be released for the NX, possibly as a launch title.

We have reached out to Nintendo in an attempt to get more details and will update this post with anything we hear back.

It's no secret that the Wii U has come up short. The system, which went on sale in November 2012, has sold 12.6 million units around the world as of December 31. This compares to more than 101 million units sold for the Wii. The Wii, of course, was a massive, global hit, and matching that success was always going to be a challenge for the Wii U.

Comparing the Wii U against its current competitors, things don't look great, either. Despite launching a full year earlier, the Wii U has been dramatically outsold by the PlayStation 4, which has moved nearly 36 million units by Sony's latest count. Microsoft does not share Xbox One sales numbers, but the console is rumored to have sold more than 18 million units.

Officially, Nintendo has said it will talk about the NX--and presumably reveal its actual name--later this year. One possible venue for the announcement would be E3 2016 in June, though Nintendo has yet to announce its plans for the show.

Back in October 2015, The Wall Street Journal reported that Nintendo had started to send out software development kits to some developers, seemingly signalling the company was preparing for launch.

As always, we'll report back with more information on Nintendo's NX as it becomes available.

Judging from the lack of game support it's been getting, I would've guessed they already stopped producing them. The game pad has been criminally underused. Outside of Nintendo's games (which are fantastic), there's really not a lot of options.

Wait... Wouldn't they have had to start production in the first place in order to be able to end it? That's the true debunking of this story!

It wasn't properly advertised and for that I think was the biggest reason why the Wii U hasn't succeeded.

This article is based on a rumor that Nintendo spokesperson has already denied.

I must wonder why every media outlet posted the article without proper verification.

Seems these sites are the new lawyers -souless husks that want readers by any means ,which means posting non verified news.

The WiiU was DOA. Sure it had some games, but Nintendo dropped the ball in terms of support.

The whole tablet thing was never proven , like the kinect.

I think they can do much better with the Nx. They really needs to get up to speed with the online functionality of its rivals, but also have a strong pipeline of games.

If the NX is a mobile-hybrid device, do you suppose it will support or even require a monthly 4G or similar subscription? Will gamers go for that?

@jedicommand7: It might actually be a hybrid of console and tablet. Example, the controller could have some sort of connection port for a phone or tablet so it could mimic a Wii U gamepad.

@grandwisdom: As someone who gamed and lived through the 2nd to third gen of gaming - I know that the NES was the best thing Nintendo ever made. It saved gaming as we know it, it saved the home console as we know it. Brought out a refined gamepad. Saves, Menus, consistent quality!

And the most important thing was Nintendo with that console, brought about licensing games. This greatly prevented landfill shovelware, allowing console makers control of what games get put on their console. Not to mention the amazing games that came out on the NES - visionary developers that laid the ground work for every category of games we know today.

They waited waaaaaaaaaay too long before releasing their "Nintendo Select" titles.

(Their best games at 19,99$ US)

If they didn't wait 3 years before getting their classic titles "affordable" maybe there'd be more Wii U's in our homes already.

People who had to choose a console for the past years got to choose between a console which had almost 200 titles which most already had great franchise titles dropped at 20$ (Assassin's Creed, Call of Duties, Battlefields, name them...) or a Nintendo console which only had a handful of fun titles still selling at full retail price 59,99$ a piece. (That's not counting the countless wiimotes/nunchuk needed and a USB flash drive to cope for lack of storage)

So if someone had around 400$ to spend he could either get a console without online community, and 2-3 titles.

or

A fully fledged online experience on a more powerful console with 5-6 A++ games.

I just got Pikmin and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze at 19,99$ and I wished I wouldve gotten them much much sooner but wasn't willing to shed 60$ for them.

Wii U is still the best "Social / Couch co-op" console to get and now that most of its great titles are at 20$, anyone should get one! =)

The value of nintendo exclusives at 20$ is beyond any othe game!

Wii U should never be your "only" and "go-to" console but if you do have a Xbox One or PS4, the Wii U could be a great addition for a change every once in a while. Play with your GF/BF, play it with your kids, play it with friends! Fun Factor always was and will always be a nintendo thing! =)

@silv3rst0rm: I am sorry but as a long time fan of Nintendo but still have a since of reality ALL OF YOUR POST MEANS NOTHING because there were NO games. This generation or console life- Nintendo put out fewer first party titles then ever before period. Add to that no 3rd party support, the WiiU was a barren wasteland with not enough oasis' to quench gamers thirst for Nintendo fanboys let alone bring in a new audience. Low install base, low amount of games, worst software sales for a console since virtual boy. This is not opinion, it is...... History at this point.

Strange, Nintendo fanboys always drooled and farted about how Nintendo only cared about the japanese market, and it seems the Wii U is doing well in Japan, so... could it be that they were wrong? I'm both shoked and devastated right now. 4 years of life span... Perhaps, but only, perhaps, IF, Nintendo stoped giving the finger to the industry and attempted at developing a decent, mainstream current hardware (NO, children, it's not about the graphics, it is about porting process), it could enjoy the benefits of not being the single publisher of their decent games, like it used to be when Nintendo mattered.

wow, even my own bleak predictions regarding the wii u are coming true. been saying this for well over a year now... that the wii u is on its last legs and won't get much support by mid 2016. and here we are... not sure i want to risk my money purchasing an nx... for all we know nintendo might have another hot mess on their hands and will pull the plug a few years in. probably best to be cautious and wait it out for a bit...

it will be a good thing if Nintendo released a new console and started over. The controllers feel light and cheap, the console itself is Wii look alike and it is hard to tell the difference. The big controller with a screen is nifty, but it still feels cheap and everyone has a smart phone or tablet at home so the nostalgia is gone. Consumers like innovation, new controller design, and a console that they are proud to show off in the living room. People do not even notice my WiiU on the tv stand because it does not stand out in any way.

@golden1elite: I am positive that me and everyone who is a gamer would play on an old dirty shoebox if it played Witcher 3, Halo 5, Tomb Raider, DRagon Age, and Fallout 4 in beautiful HD pumping graphics on our tvs. And I would be proud to show off that shoebox that cost $350 when it playes FF7 remake to all my friends, who would also be glad to pay for that 8th gen dirty shoebox. IF the WiiU had beautiful 8th gen games and lots of them then there would still not be an argument of what the wii U looked like.

Well that's about it for me and Nintendo then. Despite all of the negative press and complaints, I picked a Wii U up about a year after release. Never mind that more of the third-party titles I've been after were coming to my 7th gen PS3 than were the 8th gen Wii U, its saving grace for me was that there was still a healthy pile of first-party titles I was interested in. Trouble was the price. I figured as time went on, they would come down as all games tend to. Now this announcement- what a disaster this whole thing has been.

@BlendThree: They just announced their "Nintendo Selects" lineup which is indeed most of its 1st party titles at 19,99$!

Swing and a miss 2 years too late...

Maybe Nintendo didn't even WANT its Wii U to succeed as much as we did...

It is sad, but it was meant to happen; Its sales were mediocre at its best the years it had the games and the price advantage; Now that its competitors are around the same price point and are receiving the games, the thing won't change in its favor, and all those rumors about the NX are making it worse.

@adsparky: yup... how nintendo hasn't cut the price of the wii u in YEARS boggles the mind... sometimes you just need to cut the price and take a loss... the wii u would likely have had twice the install base by now... x1 will soon be $300 which is only marginally more expensive than the weak and elderly wii u. is this really happening? the gamecube was bad enough sales wise... never thought nintendo could get any worse. a sad tale this has become.

On the whole Wii U failure I didn't see it coming but they pretty much abandoned the Wii Remote in favor of the gaming tablet. I think that hurt them. I really like both interfaces though. Also the Wii U launch was disastrous. That 3.5GB day one patch and laggy Super Mario Bros. were a Pain.

When Nintendo stops selling low end consoles and starts making their games playable on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, they'll do a lot better. Their consoles are inferior to their competitors. And their new secret is some hybrid console/mobile platform? Who is going to buy that? Sales will suck, again, and they'll still refuse to make their games playable on 3rd party hardware, again, and the cycle of mediocrity will continue.

@Ghosthunter54: Nintendo will never go 3rd party and after all they have a lot of money and the last few consoles have been a hit or a miss for them. Gamecube did bad and Nintendo came back with a monster hit with the Wii and they follow that with the Wii U and that one was a gigantic failure. Something that's never been a failure and has always been a hit is their handheld consoles. Handheld consoles has always been a big hit for Nintendo and through the years no one has been able to compete with them with their handheld consoles. If history fallows Nintendo, then they might comeback yet again and have a hit with the NX I guess we gonna have to wait and see what happen.

Here's to hoping that the NX is a superior console in every way, or at least almost every way. I love my Wii U, but I feel like calling it a failure is a slight understatement. Regardless, I enjoyed it for what it's worth, and even though it didn't do very well, it has some great games, with a few more sure to come.

But I'm ready for the NX. I hope to god that it is a step in the right direction.

Lost 90% of the previous gen audience, that is beyond failure. Why do they need a new console anyway, everything I see on the U is more than capable. Its not like any 3rd party is going to come to the NX except to sell dolls. Complete cash grab of their fans, but yea that's normal for the mighty N.

Would suggest NX launch earlier then. You wouldn't drop making one before starting another.

Also typical, first Nintendo in 20 years that I buy.

@Thanatos2k:Not quite the only RPG. Wii U can play Wii games, thus the number you provided adds up to nine. Earthbound got re-released, and it's actually a gem. Earthbound Beginnings was released outside of Japan. Our total of RPGs goes to 11.

@Jinzo_111887: I'm sorry, you don't get to count the Wii library, because those games are on the Wii, not the Wii U, and you should have already played them, plus you don't need a Wii U to play them. Unchanged ports of decades old games don't count either.
