Nintendo Teases The "Appealing" Benefits Of Switch's Online Membership

"I think our next announcement will be worth the wait."

Originally pegged to launch in late 2017, the Nintendo Switch's paid online service will finally go live in September. We know how much a membership will cost, but, outside of access to online play and voice chat, Nintendo hasn't shared all the details yet regarding what you get for your dollars. Now, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima and managing executive officer Shinya Takahashi have teased some of the "appealing" bonuses that players can expect.

During a recent investor Q&A, Kimishima laid out Nintendo's ambitions for the service. He said, "We view the online service as one component of our efforts to diversity how our games are played and to get people to play more of our games. That is why we want to apply substantial resources to the online service, with the thinking that we will devote our energies to making this a for-pay service."

Regarding how Nintendo plans to popularise the Switch's online membership, Kimishima teased that Nintendo will offer "products" that gamers hopefully find appealing. "It is less about the mechanism and more a question of what kinds of products we can offer, and the spread of the service will depend on whether consumers want what we offer."

"Please give us a bit more time to announce more details about the service. I think that announcement will convey to you how we plan to popularise the service."

Takahashi went on to tease that Nintendo's upcoming announcement about the Switch's online service will be some big news. "We have some ideas about how to make Nintendo Switch Online appealing when it becomes a for-pay service, so I think our next announcement will be worth the wait," Takahashi said.

By comparison, the paid memberships for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 offer things like free games every month and discounts, among other benefits.

Online play for Switch games has been free since the system launched in March 2017. Initially, Nintendo planned to launch its paid service in Fall 2017, but it was delayed to 2018. At the time, Nintendo announced it would offer memberships for 1 month ($4), 3 months ($8), and 12 months ($20), but it remains to be seen if those prices are still accurate. By comparison, Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus cost $60/year.

What are you hoping to see from the Nintendo Switch Online membership? Let us know in the comments below!

Im not sure what to think of this... Nintendo's online solutions has never been great... Online play is functional, but everything around it cant be comparred to competition AT ALL. But im nonetheless curious.

If Nintendo is smart, they'll keep basic Online Multiplayer free and the Subscription will cover extra features and benefits. Currently, the Switch just doesn't have enough games with Online Multiplayer to get away with paywalling it, so doing so will only scare away potential customers. Besides, leaving basing Online Multiplayer free will give the Switch an edge over the XB1 and PS4, thus making the NS a more attractive option for those who wish to play games online without paying a Subscription Fee yet don't have the money or desire to get into PC Gaming.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: That's a really good idea you have. They should establish their online network first, improve on it before they charge any money (in the say way that Sony did with PS+).

I'm not holding my breath personally. Nintendo is allergic to the word "sale", they still think a game like Balloon Fight is worth $5, Nintendo already has functioning online for free so I don't consider that a "feature" of the subscription in and of itself... but if it's $20 a year, I don't know how they can possibly offer anything that isn't "worth it" short of just asking for $20 a year for literally nothing in return.

I'd like to see a rotation of Virtual Console games, but that's coming from somebody still playing NES and SNES games. Rotate 10 of them in and out per month. If you like a game that's on offer that month and want to keep playing it after the month is over, 50% off its price.

Achievements and online multiplayer for Virtual Console games (NES, SNES, N64, ETC) would be great (and modern games also. Streaming would be great but I doubt that will happen. And, I’ve already paid like $700 for Virtual Console and NES and SNES classic, so I’ll be pissed if I have to pay a fee to access to them again.

Nintendo caught the ball in 2017, so let’s hope they don’t fumble it in 2018.

Ditch the premium membership requirement for online multiplayer and offer easy to use modding tools for Switch games instead.

Should be 60 a year and access to all NES/SNES games on the switch while you are subscribed. $360 million in annual forecastable revenue. But no. They won't do that, they would rather sell classics and one trick Pony's rather than really start up a good, valued, service.

How about you catch up with the rest of the industry and allow for downloaded games to be played on multiple systems? Right now sharing a downloadable game in a house with 2 switches is a nightmare. A simple checkout system would work fine.

Once again, it's Nintendo has news but right now it's just them telling us Hey, we'll have news eventually.

"the spread of the service will depend on whether consumers want what we offer."

Oh, like My Nintendo, and how they don't care what we actually want, it's just discounts, discounts, discounts.

I dreamt that there was a weird Mario Bros version on the Switch eShop for only $1. I couldn’t believe it. I went to purchase it but I don’t remember what happened next.

I"m surprised nobody has mentioned this before, but I've been thinking Nintendo will have an app store similar to Google play since the Switch is powered by Android, which means 100's of free games to download at your disposal. If that's the case, that would be a huge advantage for the Switch. I can also see a cloud based system, and something like miiverse. Virtual console is almost a given. People haved knocked Nintendo's online service in the past, and I agree that's it's been horribly weak, but I believe Switch online will be huge once it rolls out. There is a reason why it's taking this long. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Idgaf if they charged $5.00 a month ($60 year). So long as they use the money to improve and enhance the services. A free old school game good for a month, that is what I don't agree with. anyone remember them talking that trash?

Whatever be the case. It's still a third of what the competition is charging, and others are pretty much just charging for playing online (in Sony's case, for the 5 minutes a month that PSN is actually working). Their monthly so called free games are almost always useless. Let's just hope Nintendo offers something attractive in addition, e.g. VC access.

Free VC games and Pokebank support when the new Pokemon drops, would be well worth $20 a year IMO.

Giving Nintendo credit, weve had a good grace period where we dont have to pay, September is a long way off!!

They could have bashed it out immediately like Sony and Microsoft.

VC is all I want. Gimme. Want 20 bucks a year from me? Fine. I don't like it, but it's not the end of the world. If they make the price higher, I will rage though.

Now that appealing benefits and Switch are in the same sentence, I can’t but help think you gat switch is now a clever name for a partner swapping service/app.

@goku_black96666: Did you even play SOCOM on PS2? Highly doubt it.

Ever play PS3 and get booted in the middle of the night a couple times a week for unnounced maintenance? I did plenty of times mid-match on Resistance, Uncharted and several other games.

I was also gonna dd that PS4's service has been terrible but it actually got better over the past year or so. It was basically no better than the PS3's at launch despite having a required subscription.
