Nintendo Switch's Gone Home Delayed, New Release Date Announced

Explore one of gaming's most powerful stories on the go.

The Fullbright Company and Annapurna Interactive have announced that Gone Home is coming to Switch. First releasing in 2013, Gone Home is a first-person exploration game that rose to critical acclaim for its powerful story that addresses LGBTQ issues. [Update: Gone Home will not release on August 23 as originally announced. Instead, Annapurna says it's due out on September 6 in both North America and Europe. The publisher teases, "We might have some additional news to share then, so stay tuned!"]

Gone Home puts you into the role of Katie Greenbriar, a 21-year-old woman who's returned from overseas to visit her family's new home for the first time. You find the Greenbriar house abandoned, with a note from Katie's younger sister, Samantha, begging Katie to leave well enough alone and not snoop into what happened between her and their parents in Katie's absence.

We think the game is superb, giving it a 9.5/10. In our Gone Home review, Carolyn Petit wrote, "Gone Home executes on its ambitions flawlessly. The things in the Greenbriars' home take on an emotional heft as you come to understand the stories they tell, and although they're absent, you feel the presence of the Greenbriars all around you. Gone Home is an important game because it does something games rarely do: it tells a believable story, grounded in the real world, that focuses on women and treats all of its characters, women and men alike, as complex individuals. But the reason to play Gone Home is not for its importance. It's for the elegance with which its tale is constructed and communicated, and the captivating way that it makes you an active participant in peeling back the layers of one family's ordinary lives as their home tells you their stories. Like many of our own memories, those stories cut deep."

Gone Home first launched on PC, before getting Xbox One and PS4 ports in 2016. The Switch port releases August 23.

I heard playing the XBox One or PS4 versions causes you to lose achievements/trophies.

You can beat this game in under a minute if you go straight for the room under the stairs and then run to the attic.

Props for nintendo trying to diversify it's library. They even have a game that are interactive pure art forms or pretentious walking sims, depends on who you ask.

This game blows. Don't waste your time or money. It starts off with promises of a deep and enjoyable story, only to slap you in the face with shallowness that was based in an agenda to be "edgy" and "relevant".

Y'know, I'm extremely happy with the amount of 3rd party support the Switch has been getting lately and I really hope the trend continues going forward for the big "N." With that being said Gone Home is one of the few titles I have very strong feelings toward.

Part of the reason for that is not really the game's fault itself but the amount of unwarranted hype and acclaim that surrounded it upon its initial release. Never, and I do mean never, have I ever witnessed a game getting almost universal critical acclaim across the board but failing miserably (my opinion anyway.) to meet the high praise given to it from not just myself but the community of gamers at large.

When a title gets almost unanimous 10/10's and near perfect scores virtually everywhere there is a certain level of expectation placed upon it. Truth is I don't think even I was prepared for the terrible let down that was the final moments of Gone Home.

The whole game, through its use of solitary exploring and puzzle solving led me to believe upon my first hour or so of playing it that I was in for some amazing if not dramatic reason as to the events unfolding before my eyes. The more I explored (And I explored EEVVEERRYYTTHHHIIINNGGG!!!) the more my mind started to conjure up diabolical premises that could account for the solitary nature of my journey as I tried to piece together just what exactly was going on. It wasn't until a few minutes before the end of the game that I realized just what was happening that all my excitement was thrown out the window in place for complete disappointment.

The worst part about Gone Home is that initially it leads you on to believe that something so monumentous is about to occur around the next corner but unfortunately that moment never comes. What's worse is when that "moment" does occur it pales to whatever thoughts may have been lingering in the back of your mind.

I can easily say that Gone Home was one of the worst disappointments I have had in the last 10 or so years of my videogaming life and that's saying a lot.

Before I purchased this title I had heard there was a lot of negative feedback surrounding it's narrative and message. I can honestly say that while for some those things may be an issue the biggest problem still at the games core is what I have outlined above. Perhaps if this game wasn't as well received as it was it wouldn't be as much a let down but when a title is vying for GOTY but in many ways could be argued is barely even a 5/10 game it begs questioning on the part of the reviewers/gaming media as a whole.

Is Gone Home the worst game ever? Absolutely not, but to say that it is a title deserving of praise of titles like Zelda, Uncharted 2, etc... is just adding insult to injury. If anything it should serve as a warning for future game reviews as I think many like myself were left utterly disappointed when those credits appeared on screen.

-Disappointed, Ninja? Kind of liking reading all your posts?-

Unfortunately, in this case... I think Gone Home may be worse.

:(

-STAY HOME NINJA APPROVED-

@videogameninja: Gone Home is gaming journalism's version of fake news. It makes you distrust the entire review system.

@videogameninja: Definitely the most overrated game in quite some time, not even that good of a "walking simulator". One more achievement to unlock in this game and it can be permanently erased from my hard drive and memory, as it was hardly memorable to begin with. And I have a hard time even going back to the game for that one achievement. Glad I didn't pay for this schlock!
