Nintendo Switch Touchscreen Shown Off For First Time

So close you can almost touch it.

Nintendo Switch has a touchscreen--except, until now, it hasn't been shown off. Thankfully, an impressions video from YouTuber GamingWithMe finally demonstrates the screen's touch capabilities in action.

The video showcases Skylanders Imaginators running on Switch, with menus controllable using a touch interface. Check it out for yourself below.

It's currently unclear if any Switch games will use the system's touch controls for anything other than menu screens. Touch controls in menus were disabled during GameSpot's recent Nintendo Switch hands-on.

Following a bout of rumors, Nintendo finally confirmed the Switch's touch capabilities in its January livestream event. The screen will feature capacitive touch--a departure from the cheaper resistive screens found in the DS, 3DS, and Wii U. For more, you can check out all the news and videos from the Nintendo Switch Presentation.

Skylanders Imaginators is one of the seven confirmed Switch launch titles. The other six are: 1-2-Switch, The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+, Just Dance 2017, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, I Am Setsuna, and Super Bomberman R. For all the games confirmed to be coming to Switch--but not necessarily at launch--take a look at our roundup.

The Switch launch lineup could continue to grow between now and release in March, but it's unlikely there will be as many launch titles as there were for Wii U, which had 23. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently spoke out to stress that launch is "not the be-all and the end-all."

Nintendo Switch launches March 3.

i guess the touch will work, it may also work the the system startup too. when he plug the "switch" into the dock, reminds me when i plug in my shield tablet k1 in console mode, it take the same time to load it on the tv set.

ironic that they use a samsung tv, cause i have a 65" smart uhdtv and using the app. the the tv. is still buggy.

The touchscreen function also adds into the price tag then. So that adds up to the story. Nintendo did not mention anything about it. Maybe it wasn't fully utilized yet, I don't know. We will get more insight on it soon.

@panoramavee: I don't understand why they didn't mention all these things at the first presentation...

One of the things that intrigues me about the Switch is some of the stuff that hasn't been shown off being used in games yet. The touchscreen is one of them because I'd think it would be difficult to design a game that could use it or not (Depending on whether the console is docked). That kinda means that we could have games that actually act differently depending on if they are being used "In the wild" as opposed to home... Which could be an interesting proposition.

The other thing that fascinates me is the IR camera on the right controller... Will that be used and if so, how will it be used? It could open up some new avenues for games that might be interesting.

To be honest, this console strikes me as a "Wait and see" console - it's intriguing enough to make me track it's progress but not used well enough in the stuff I have seen to make me want it immediately.

Good god that video was awful. Bad camera, and a YouTube quality voiceover. I'll wait till March..

Gotta say, I don't like capacitive touch screens. You can't use a stylus, and can't tap with your nails. Usually ends up with lower precision of controls.

Avatar image for n0on3

@Thanatos2k: Aren't there special styluses that still work? Also, isn't it good that you can't tap with your nail? It forces you into the habit of touching screens with your fingers so that they don't get scratched.

Avatar image for wharvey01

@Thanatos2k: At least they're a lot more accurate.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

@wharvey01: They aren't though. Being able to touch a small part of the screen with your nail or stylus allows far straighter lines.

Avatar image for Tiwill44

@Thanatos2k: I agree, but in this case I don't think the touch controls are ever gonna be used as a core gameplay mechanic in most games, since there would be no way of playing those games while the system is docked. It's just for convenience.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

@Tiwill44: Uh, that's like saying no games ever used touch controls as a core gameplay mechanic in a 3DS or DS game. This thing is a handheld remember?

Yay, touchscreen!

I don't see them adding a hell of a lot more games in a little over a month. It would be nice, though. Wish theyd push up Mario Kart

OMG! Great video, really enjoyed watching that. It's cool to see someone geek out and be really excited for the Switch. I am very excited for Zelda on the Switch. Really don't care about anything else. Being able to play a console quality game anywhere is seriously awesome! Nintendo has a hit on their hands. The Switch and PS4 Pro are a match made in heaven! Can't wait!

just gonna wait till stardew valley/harvestmoon and pokemon release on switch then i get 1.

The more I see the more I think they really should have pushed this as a handheld with console quality games. Kind of like the Vita but it seems done much better. Now if only they didnt stumble over themselves around every corner......

Did you guys forget that I am Setsuna will also be a launch title?

Avatar image for FLEEBS

@ice12tray: He says "the other six" launch games and then only mentions 5.

Avatar image for ice12tray

@FLEEBS: That just makes it worse! Lol
