Now Playing: Two New Nintendo Switch Models Reportedly Coming - GS News Update

Particularly when it comes to its handheld game systems, Nintendo has a long history of releasing revised models of its platform. Nintendo Switch will reportedly follow that trend later this year, when it's said to be getting multiplayer updated models.

According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, Nintendo will launch not one but two new Nintendo Switch models in 2019. One of these would feature improved hardware, while the other would be a pared-down version intended to sell at a cheaper price point.

One of these new Switch models will sport "enhanced" features, and it's designed for "avid" gamers. However, its specs won't match that of Xbox One X or PS4 Pro, WSJ said. The other system is described as a "cheaper option for casual gamers that Nintendo sees as a successor to its aging hand-held 3DS device..."

According to WSJ, Nintendo is planning to announce the new Switch consoles at E3 2019 in June, and then launch them "a few months later," in time for the holiday season. A Nintendo representative declined to comment when approached by WSJ.

A source explained to WSJ that the new consoles might not be what you expect. "You would be wrong to think the enhanced version is similar to what Sony did with PS4 Pro and the other is just a cheap alternative that looks very similar to some past hand-held machines, say, Sony's PlayStation Vita," the source said.

Intriguingly, the report goes on to claim that the lower-cost Switch model is doing away with things like controller vibration in an effort to cut costs. The report doesn't include any mention of price points for either console. The existing Switch is currently priced at $300 in the US.

And in another change, WSJ reports that Nintendo is working with Sharp on the displays for the new Switch models. The company reportedly bid to make the displays for the original Switch consoles but lost out.

As you may recall, WSJ was the first to initially report that Nintendo would release a new Switch revision in 2019. At the time, there was only talk about a single revision, and it was unclear exactly what form it would take. One thing that has remained consistent that this would be a mid-generation refresh that plays the same games, rather than a new generation of hardware.

Given E3 is now just a few months away, you can expect even more reports, rumours, and speculation about new hardware to continue to ramp up. And, perhaps not so coincidentally, Nintendo's share price has spiked since markets opened on Monday, following the report's release.

The Switch has been a big success for Nintendo. It sold more than 32 million consoles worldwide in under two years, which is more than double the lifetime sales figure of the Wii U.

Microsoft is also expected to announce new hardware at E3 2019, while Sony's rumored PlayStation 5 is likely set for a reveal at some point soon as well.

not much of an upgrade, I like mine, got extra 1tb card memory in it. But I dislike the lack of original storage.

Unfortunately I always have to have the latest and greatest in most cases..... guess I'll give my current switch to the wife and upgrade.

Ugh why not "Two New Nintendo Switch *Games* Coming"

@girlusocrazy:

Lots of Switch games are on the horizon. Yoshi, Mario Maker, Daemon Ex, Pokemon, Links Awakening, Animal Crossing, Luigi’s Mansion, etc.

@doctor_mg: Yeah I was there on day one for Switch, now I been staring at that horizon for two years, I can't wait to get there finally.

@girlusocrazy:

None of games were announced at launch two years ago. Most were announced, what, less than six months ago? So, not sure what you’re talking about.

@doctor_mg: Talking about waiting for Switch games in general. Owning all of the consoles and already having the Wii U, I haven't used my switch often since I bought it. I'm looking forward to Nintendo's new games.

I just don’t understand when this year is already packed with first party releases.

@doctor_mg: Finally

It's been a long wait. I'm going to get Zelda for sure. There's a good amount and I wish they had gotten to this point sooner.

@girlusocrazy: Same thought here. They're spending funds making more consoles to play the few games there are. Nintendo make amazing triple A games but how do they expect to push hardware when its once every 10 years? Not counting indies as my computer already had access to them all...

Me & my Daughter both love our Switch but I don't think we'll upgrade them though. Unless Nintendo is talking about battery life increase, I might upgrade for the right price that is.

I won’t be upgrading my switch.

@Sorrow_316: Yeah why bother? To make pixels look more square on those indies?

So the cheaper option is for casual gamers? I thought price and hardware specs were everything to casual gamers, isn't that why they've stuck with the Playstation for so many generations?

You can't flaunt your newly purchased Nintendo Switch to your shallow peers and boast about how it's the cheapest model on the market. That won't impress anybody. And if you can't impress people with your material possessions, why even bother owning a game console at all?

Greatness awaits, but not if you're a cheapskate.

@GambreGoemon: Casual gamer in this sense implies those who play garbage mobile "games".

Avatar image for skot_free

@GambreGoemon: umm. You took that whole thing way too far for such a simple news story. First of all Casual gamers usually play what’s popular which is why they have PS4’s. If casuals were so stuck on specs then Xbox1X would be leading in sales. Next you are probably in the wrong place to make a point about Material possessions considering gamers will frivolously spend money all the time.

Proof that is fake right there. They would never remove the controller vibration as multiple nintendo games require it for minigames and certain features. They would have to modify all of those games to accept the new change. It wouldn't make any sense.

@129260: that is unless they’re getting rid of HD rumble for a regular rumble configuration.

@NorseLax09: If they had a 1080p screen in handheld mode, running much cooler than the game of hot potato they have now, and TV mode in 4k then yep, but I doubt it.

128gb is not that hard to produce on a console. Come on Nintendo

@ocinom: The Switch has expandable storage. If you want more, but an sd card.

@NorseLax09: That's not really the same as internal storage though. SD card is very slow.

I still haven't got a Switch because of the price. I wish I could say that was common but apparently I'm in the minority. Haven't played Breath of the Wild yet either.

Maybe I'll take another look at buying one when these new models come out.

Intriguing. I love my Switch, not really looking for an upgrade. That being said, if it's more than *just* more horsepower then I might be interested. I do love gadgets

I'm wondering what the more powerful model will mean for games on the system.

Are they gonna release more intensive games just for the new Switch like they did with the new 3ds? And how will this fragment the Switch playerbase? Will there be games you just can't play on the cheaper model because of control scheme or lowered specs?

These are questions.

Avatar image for Blade_Runner_07

@Ovirew: Most likely. When it comes to No tendon, the more money you spend the better off you will be.

I can see them integrating the joycons as part of the console, not sure what limitations that would give you though. It will be interesting to see what the other model does though

All I want is my switch to fit (comfortably) in my pocket.
It's too big to call 'portable' with a straight face at the moment.

@skyhighgam3r: You can give it to your kid to shut him up on long car trips. That's portable enough for me.

@olddadgamer: That's not how it works for me you Old Man. I bought two 2 Switch for me and my Daughter cause I can carry my own Switch and by that, I put it inside my Book Bag :)

Avatar image for olddadgamer

@davillain-: Ah, see, if I tried to give the boys theirs and carry my own, I'd get the "Hey, mine died, Dad, give me yours" and I would say "no" and there goes the quiet car.

(Yes, I am at that stage of parenthood where I spend most of my time trying to maximize quiet.)

(It's going poorly.)

@skyhighgam3r: i assume they could probably make it smaller, but what would be taken out to compensate it. defintiely the detachable joycons, is a virtual guarantee.
id assume they take out expandable storage as well as any docked support.

I still wonder would that be enough to make it smaller and afforable?

Avatar image for skyhighgam3r
SkyHighGam3r

@alastor529: The joycons would for sure be integrated, which is fine really... They are kind of terrible as a replacement for a standard controller - and really if the main selling point is portability, their use only makes sense when attached.

I don't see docked support leaving, since it just uses the some port as charging. Rather, I think they'd downgrade it so it only output 720p. Which, again, is totally fine. There's absolutely nothing 1st party or exclusive where resolution is a big deal.

I'd not only be surprised, but pissed if they took out the Micro SD slot. Devices way smaller have it, it takes up like no space... and what are you supposed to do without memory? Use physical games like it's 2009? lol no thank you.
