Nintendo Switch Sales Hit Big New Milestone

Plus, 14 Nintendo games have topped 1 million.

21 Comments

Nintendo's latest hardware has hit a new milestone, in part thanks to the launch of the new Switch Lite. The company announced that lifetime sales of both Switch models combined have hit 15 million units in North America since launch. The company also boasted that it's been the top-selling console for 10 months in a row, according to the NPD group.

So far, 14 first-party Nintendo Switch games have sold more than 1 million units, and four of those hit at least 6 million. Nintendo also says that the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate set sales records for their respective franchises, both becoming the fastest-selling to date.

The Nintendo Switch launched its original console-handheld hybrid model in March 2017. In September, Nintendo added the Switch Lite model, which removes the console docking functionality, and it sells for a lower cost at $200.

As of July 30, Nintendo announced it had sold approximately 37 million Nintendo Switch units worldwide. As noted by financial analyst Daniel Ahmad on Twitter, the Nintendo Switch hitting 15 million units in North America means its sales in this region alone have topped the Wii U lifetime sales worldwide.

@nintendians:

I liked it too. Of course, I also still love my Wii as well so, there ya go. It always kinda saddens me that any time you mention the Wii everyone responds with: "Oh yeah, that sports game was fun!" And not a single one of them ever seems to realize that Wii Sports was just a *demo disk*. smh.

Anyway, I'm happy for Nintendo this time around too. I mean, if you actually look at the last few systems, they've been coming up with some really fun ones for quite awhile but just haven't been getting the credit for it that I think they've deserved because the idea was too "different" or came out at the wrong time or whatever.

It's really nice to see that they finally hit on a great idea at the right time and that they're well on their way towards having a large enough user base to not get forgotten about when the new PS/Xbox hit next year because the Switch really is a brilliant idea so I am seriously hoping that it enjoys a very long life in the spotlight.

Honestly, it's the only console I want to use these days in my house. I love the games I have on it but also the ability to use it in portable mode - curled up in bed or on the balcony - when it doesn't make sense to hog my family TV. The design basically let's me play any time I want no matter what and makes it feel so effortless. It might sound silly to someone who doesn't have one but trust me - it's a subtle but powerful draw of the device

@xantufrog: It is innit? LOL.

That 3rd party controller support was also subtly slick too imho because it means that it literally does not matter what type of controller you like-- you're probably going to have no problem finding one that's comfortable for you.

In fact, I really hate to say it, but it actually kind of puts the Xbox Adaptive to shame for those who have physical issues with their hands but aren't in a wheelchair.

I mean, you don't have to buy a bunch of odd switches and add ons only to still wind up having to struggle with the actual controller- you can just buy something that doesn't hurt and use whatever it is right out of the box.

Don't get me wrong, the XAC is a beautiful idea that is definitely well-received but working with disabled folks of all ages and types as a part of my job, I've been hearing about the joys of them being able to play on the Switch just as much-- Nintendo just hasn't been getting any credit for it.

So, I hear ya xantufrog, I mean, those tiny and subtle details can indeed make all the difference in the world in how playable something is.

I'm not getting the Lite. My games are physical so that's not the problem, it's transferring save data. Sucks that it doesn't just save it to the cartridge itself, that would be so much easier, or just to the SD card that you could pop out and put in the other system. Didn't think I'd ever look back on memory cards so fondly but that was easier than this internet-only transfer where you have to go clicking in menus and waiting for UL/DL.

@girlusocrazy: why would you get a second, downgraded console to play the same games on the same saves?

@MigGui: My kid would beat up the Lite and also want to play on the TV sometimes.

I hope that gaming fans see that all 3 companies doing great means good news for everyone no matter your gaming platform of choice.

Switch does Good, so the competition tries to apply those positive values to their own gaming division. Vice versa. All fans win.

So it sold a little more than Wii U in about the same time period.

@basketballfan: Read the article again. The Switch sold 15M in North America alone, vs. the Wii U's ~13M globally.

It's also nowhere near the same amount of time. Wii U launched in 2012, and if you consider the launch of the Switch as the end of the Wii U's lifetime, that's nearly 5 years. The Switch has only been out 2.5 years.

So, it has sold more in just one market in about half the time. Hardly "a little more than Wii U in about the same time period."

So is sold more than its predecessor in one region in half the time versus global sales while also being the top selling console 10 months in a row.... and it's still unimpressive? Right.....

Convenience and price, and mostly because now days indies games have taken the spotlight from big AAA games. Only one or two big games comes out every couple of months, while there is a wave after wave of indie games not just every month but every week. Switch is perfect for some of these games because allows you to play them on the go, which is very convenient.
