Nintendo Switch Paid Online Membership Launch Window Narrowed Down

The days of free online play are numbered.

We already knew that the Nintendo Switch paid online membership program will launch in September, but now we have an even more specific window for when to expect it. Nintendo has announced that it will launch in the "second half" of September.

As announced previously, a membership is required for online play for some games. Ever since Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017, online play has been free. Subscribing also gets you cloud saves and access to a library NES titles that will expand over time.

At $20/year, Nintendo Switch Online is significantly cheaper than Xbox Live and PlayStation Plus, both of which cost $60/year. You can also subscribe for $4/month or $8 for three months. Switch owners will also have the option to subscribe to a $35 family plan, which allows up to eight different Nintendo Account holders to share the same membership, even across different consoles.

The Nintendo Switch Online service was originally scheduled to begin in late 2017 before being delayed into this year.

Is online still a thing? Everyone said after the repeal of "net neutrality" months and months ago that there would be no internet or that only the rich would be able to afford it. Wait....I am on the internet now...…..hmmmmm.

@inkman66: exactly. If the liberal press reports it, people adopt the opinions & accept it as fact. During the times with more access to different opinions than ever, society seems to grow more monolithic.

Bring out Dark Souls Remastered already...

I'm sure they're just holding it back for the paid sub to launch :/

Even at that fantastic price i just dont do more than 1 sub. Even with Netflix, Hulu and Amazon. I choose 1 for the year and go. Sorry not sorry Nintendo. I really didnt enjoy any of their offerings on the Switch other than Mario Kart Deluxe. Really disliked the direction of Zelda and hated Mario Odyssey

@alexofburg: good thing neither of those games require, or even offer, multiplayer. May be the way you worded it, but it doesn't sound like you currently own a switch anyway, so a double dose of things you don't need to worry about.

@twztid13: if i didnt have a switch then why would I have said anything about Mario and Zelda? God forbid I dislike something on one of my platforms of choice. I dont blindly defend every exclusive. They both sucked if you ask me and yes I played and own them both. Beat zelda but only played about 5 hours of Mario. Most over rated games this gen on any console imo

@kdb__1981: I'd rather pay more & get more, but I have never payed more than $35 per year for psn or xbl. Cheap ass gamer dot com's trade forums have many people selling them for less, but even just waiting for deals for that price on their news page helped me never pay more than that (though obviously both places have them for more than that, but I was patient, or bought multiples when available). I am not interested in NES games in the slightest, nor are there any Switch games I want to play while using a smartphone for communication, so I'll pass on that sub.

@twztid13: I do understand were your coming form on I used to use CAG all the time but have not been there in a year or two.

I doubt I will Play a single switch game online myself but you never know like i said depending on the games they offer i may pick it up for the NES games and save backups my cartridge collection is not what it used to be do to a few things out of my control.

I have mostly moved on to PC gaming so I don't have to worry about live or plus for what few games i do play online.

@CeltaVigo: I think you can use a Wii/Wii U USB Ethernet adaptor for that.

Family plan sweet! Even though the wife and I have our own Switches we can still save a little. Pay attention Sony and M$! That's how fans should be treated like.

@dr_vancouver:

fans should be forced to pay for online when they already paid for internet? lol

You should be forced to pay to backup your saves? If you think this is how you should be treated, by all means keep buying nintendo.

@dr_vancouver: i wonder how it's set up? People used the psn system limit for sharing ps+ for years before Sony changed it to only 2 consoles at a time. If they only limit it to IP address, or some other easy to 'manage' manner, 8 people could share the membership price at different households ($2.50 each would be nice, as I wouldn't want the NES games, so i could share with 7 others who don't either).

I'll probably do it even though I dislike NES games.
