Nintendo Switch Had A Big Black Friday, Setting New Records In US

Nintendo is having a happy holiday.

22 Comments

Nintendo set sales records over the holiday weekend from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday, the company has announced. The Nintendo Switch became the best-selling Nintendo console in US history for those five days, even surpassing the Wii, and the system also had its best-selling week ever in the US. All of these figures are for the US only.

In the announcement, Nintendo also noted that Adobe Analytics showed Switch among the most purchased items online on Thanksgiving day and the best seller for video games during the full Black Friday to Cyber Monday time period. Overall Nintendo sold $250 million worth of products during the holiday, according to internal sales figures. That includes Switch, 3DS products, the NES and Super NES Classic systems, and accessories and games.

Now Playing: Nintendo Switch Breaks Black Friday Records In US - GS News Update

Nintendo also noted that Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee have reached a combined 1.5 million units since launch. Super Mario Party reached 1 million as well, making it the fastest selling Mario Party game. Total lifetime 3DS sales have reached 22 million, while the Super NES Classic has hit 2.5 million and the NES Classic is at 2 million.

Some of these records may be due to increased shopping time, as more stores are choosing to open for select hours on Thanksgiving day. That gives shoppers a head-start on Black Friday deals. The Nintendo Switch also had an appealing bundle option this year, packaging Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in with the system at no extra charge. Some retailers piggybacked on that bundle with extras of their own. The 3DS also got its own holiday bundle, packaging a specially colored 2DS with Super Mario Maker for $80.

The pre release smash bros console skin was a big factor to driving sales

That surprises me because I didn't think the Switch deals were anything special. Wasn't the main deal a bundle with Mario Kart for $300?

@sparent180: Crazy when you think that the Switch deal included Mario Kart 8 for $300 and PS4 was selling for $200 including the new Spider-Man game. Glad to hear the Switch is doing so well, I know out of all the consoles in my house, it is far and away the one that is used the most.

I know several parents that were looking to get one in black Friday for the kids, myself included. Having fortnite is also a big plus for many kids. That's EU and not US also.

I can see the Switch doing well this Christmas

"Total lifetime 3DS sales have reached 22 million"

You guys might want to correct that because 3DS' actual lifetime sales are over 73M units.

@heqteur: US, not worldwide. That's also a wrong total too, because all the remakes and special editions means the average 3DS owner has 2 systems, meaning there are really only about 11 million unique 3DS owners, and with 8 million Switch owners, it's clear that Switch is not only the hotter system, it's also got more active users- as shown by all the Switch games topping the charts while 3DS releases fizzle, and die.

Poor souls that got scammed and are going to get deceived by Nintendo and their inferior products (lots of extras needed to have a decent gaming experience).

@gzaface: poor soul who thinks anything he doesn't like is a scam. And I'm not sure what extras you're talking about, but mtx and loot boxes aren't Nintendo's cup of tea, actually. I've been playing hundreds of hours on both Odyssey and BotW and I didn't need any extra to enjoy them. But what do I know... keep getting scammed by microtransactions, loot boxes, EA, Ubi and Activision while the rest of us just have fun with whatever we want.

@heqteur: Oh, you don't need an extra sd card to play more than a couple of games then, you don't need a controller to play with real grown up hands and when the battery is empty and want to play docked, you don't need weird accessories if you want to voice chat, you don't need case and screen protection to avoid damage to your already low quality and over priced product, you don't need to hope that nothing happens to your "console" and you lose hours of progress in your save games, i see, it's me the one who's imaging all of that. As i said before, poor nintendo fan soul.

@gzaface:

1. If you buy physical no you don't, you can fit far more games on the internal than a PS4 or Xbox as they dont need an install.

2a. No the controller is fine, and you don't have to buy a second for local co-op.

2b. The batteries last roughly 3 days, that's probably 10x the ps4 pad lasts.

3. Many games come with voice chat on the console, it's up to the developers to put it in.

4. Do you need a case and screen for your phone, it's a choice not a necessity.

5. Cloud saves are a thing.

@gzaface:

I'm a gaming fan, I own a PS4, Switch and an Xbox One. I like games, I don't lead my life with some absurd corporate loyalty fuelling attacks on 'rival' systems. It's ridiculous.

In my experience those that call out 'fanboy' the most are often the most guilty. Switch is a great handheld, better than the 3DS or the Vita ever were. Maybe handheld isn't your thing, but it's been many people's thing since at least the Gameboy.

You're just letting bias rule your thinking, if you looked at things more objectively and opened yourself up to trying things before creating an opinion you might actually find you have fun in places you may not have thought you would.

@risingdawn: I own a switch as well, and he isn't wrong. He came on way to strong though.

Technically yes, you don't have to "buy" all these extras, but besides the screen protector they are pretty much necessary. The joycons are really tiny and poor experience to use. The pro controller is a must have. The battery life for all controllers are fantastic.

I cannot back up my saves for free without paying for their crappy online service, the storage is ridiculously low for a console, ( did have to buy a sd card) and the voice chat and social solutions are ridiculous. Xbox live on the original xbox had more features.

But to say he's biased is not fair to me. The switch is a good console, but only in the way that it can play decent looking games on a handheld. Everything that should be expected is not there. Nintendo is way behind in everything they do, and to say otherwise is foolish.

The vita was an amazing hardware, and better than the switch in every possible way (in terms of features), except for storage and games library. It too had storage issues with the proprietary memory card which hurt it badly. Also, once it stopped selling as well due to the high prices of storage cards, the game library dried up. Although, the game library was pretty decent depending on your taste.

However, it had way more features then the switch. Proper voice chat party system, social features, being able to backup saves without subscription, pin for security, themes, etc.

@heqteur Most Switch games don't go down in price, on other consoles you wait a few months and you can get games cheap, not on the Switch.
