Nintendo Switch Fighting Game Arms Playable Without Motion Controls

Fingers, not arms.

Arms, Nintendo's new fighting game for the Switch, is playable with standard button controls, Nintendo has confirmed.

The Joy-Con controllers' motion options have dominated much of Arms' marketing so far, but in a recent Nintendo Treehouse livestream, the platform-holder confirmed this isn't the only way to play.

"It's important to point out that [we've] been playing with the Joy-Con--one in each hand--using motion controls," explained Nintendo localization producer Morgan Ritchie. "But obviously if you're a purist and you like button controls, [and] you'd rather use a more traditional controller, you can of course do that as well." This was then confirmed by Nintendo's manager of product marketing, JC Rodrigo.

Check out the segment for yourself at 52:18 in the video above.

Arms was announced during Nintendo's recent full Switch reveal event. We went hands on with the gangly fighter soon after--check out our impressions of it here. People should be happy about this, not still get triggered over the game existing. I guarantee if it has online (Which I hope it does), people will still bitch about it existing when it's supposed to be a new IP which people were begging Nintendo to do for a while. This is Splatoon all over again.

@darksouls: Why are you here then? You say you don't care about the game yet you took the time to make a comment about it.

This game looks ridiculous no matter the controls... looks like a mini-game rather than a stand alone title.

That's good. Now no one will bother with the silly motion controls. The damage is done though and the game will be viewed as a motion control game.

@cfscorpio: That's a pretty harsh assertion because more info can make people change their minds whether it's good or bad.

That would've been a shame if this game wouldn't have received controller support.

Motions control are nice to have for some crowd, but leaving out buttons would be just silly..

Anyone remember the days of Mario on the nes, when person would actually move the control thinking it help Mario jumped further...

Then wants the point of having motion controls? Normal controls will naturally be easier and more responsive, so it will put anyone using motion controls at a disadvantage, is anyone going to use the motion controls?

@darksynced: Some people might find it more fun? You know... that crazy word "fun"? Some people who won't be spending enough time learning the game might pick up how to play the game quicker for their 15 minutes of fun when a friend lets them play on their Switch? Better to have the option there than not have it at all, especially if the Joy-Cons are going to have motion controls and it's a feasible thing to put in anyway. When was having options ever a bad thing?

@darksynced: I hate motion controls - but I have friends (casual gamers) that come over to play Mario Kart 8, and they prefer motion controls to standard controls. They lose , of course, but the'll actually fight for the wii motion control instead of the pro controller or the tablet. It's confounding to me, but the market is there.

Sometimes, you gotta think about all those people who are not you.

@Oogazi: Zelda and Metroid used to so well though, so you can't say it's crap in every application.

@Dack_Lancer: "smh" huh? Try shaking your head for an hour straight, see how it feels. Its not laziness, its repetition of one movement type. Wrists are weak, about the only games ive been able to play for more than an hour were golf and tennis. But i play those both in real life too so idk, maybe i just enjoy em. As the other guy said many people wanna relax when they play games. While its new, exciting, and fresh for the first hourish after that it becomes tiring and even annoying especially considering how much better you know you couod be if you didnt use the motion controls.

I love to get drunk n high and drive into walls in mario kart as much as the next guy, but losing saps joy eventually. To stay competitive (multiplayer) youre gonna have to use buttons. Or else youre gonna be saying "oh wow another guy using standard controls" every time you lose, which while a valid excuse, is still just that an excuse.

Not saying motion controls are bad by any means, theyre actually great every once in awhile and the option to use them is always appreciated. However id prefer if all games that had motion controls also had standard. I can fool around when i want, but when im lazy or trying to be competitive i can turn em off.

@KBABZ: Because they need to show off the motion control capability of the Joy-Cons and that's the best game up for the task of demonstrating it? They're in PR mode right now to promote all the things the console does. There's no better way to promote something than to actually show it in action and for motion controls, Arms is probably the best pick of the lot to demonstrate that with. By contrast, practically any other game they've shown off so far can demonstrate the regular controls.

@KBABZ: I think it is pretty clear Nintendo is desperately hoping the non-gamer Wii audience can be brought back into the fold. But really this was a no brainer. The very nature of the Switch would mean it is a massive mistake to lock any games controls into one specific set up. Making arms motion control only would essentially negate the whole "It's also a handheld so you can take you can play on the go!" concept of the console.

@ZIMdoom: Correct but at the same time, they spent an AWFUL long time on the motion controls and it's clear to me from the presentation that that was the way they designed the game to be played it. It's sort of (but not extreme as) the FPS view from Twin Snakes.

Hopefully they do this for all their games with motion controls. Most of the time it creates a worse experience, but sometimes it's beneficial (Splatoon for example).

For me, it looks fun and competitive.

@iandizion713: Hmm I usually always look around in the options when starting a new game and I didnt see that... but now I really wish I did. Was it in the original version or added later with a patch? Cause at that time I might not have downloaded any patches since I still hadnt reconnected with my internet provider after my concussion.

@gameroutlawzz: It was original. The game come with two play styles. You had the Modern Motion and then the more Traditional style. Some reviewers enjoyed the more traditional style more.

@iandizion713: I heard it wasn't quite the same though. I've never played it so I can't be sure but I remember reading something where someone was saying that it seemed like Zero was a lot harder to control in the traditional way than any of the other games that were built for a regular control style were.
