Nintendo Switch EShop Adds Another New Game Today

King of Fighters '99 is out today.

44 Comments

Switch owners looking for something new to play have a fresh option today on the eShop.

Like almost half of the system's eShop releases to date, today's addition is another ACA Neo Geo game port. This time around, the game is The King of Fighters '99, which was originally released on 1999 and has been ported to a variety of systems over the years.

Given its name--or by considering what so many of the Switch's other ACA Neo Geo games have been--you can likely glean that this is a fighting game. It was developed by SNK and features a new Striker Match mode, where players choose a fourth character who can be temporarily brought in during a match to attack their opponent and then leave. The game costs $8/£6.29.

If you're looking for a different brand of fighting on Switch, tomorrow, May 26, brings with it the release of Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers. If you're in Europe, you'll also be able to pick up Disgaea 5 Complete, which launched in the US earlier this week.

Other recent Switch game releases have included Thumper and another ACA Neo Geo title, Galaxy Fight: Universal Warriors. Looking ahead, the first of two Global Testpunch events--limited-time demos for Nintendo's Arms--is scheduled to take place this weekend.

@lorikatIf you actually love this game, play it using an input device that's a closer match for 2D fighters.

It's simply not fluid using a Joy-Con, which invariably diminishes your gameplay enjoyment, and tarnishes your love for the game.

"But, but... I can play some koF'99 on a portable, this is rad!"

Because fighters are best when played alone on a small screen?

"Hey, I can break out the Joy-Cons and bust out some 2-player fighting on the go!"

Congratulations, now you're two people suffering through inadequate controls.

"That's okay, at least we're evenly matched!"

Or evenly gimped.:

@runstalker: I don't even have a Switch, man. I'm just glad SNK games are getting ported to newer systems.

If I had a Switch though, I'd probably use the Joycons as little as possible. lol

They look incredibly uncomfortable, but I'd like to try them out sometime.

@crunkster64Totally, but I had this conversation many years ago.

Probably because I grew up playing 2D fighters in arcades with mint, beautifully calibrated sticks and microswitches, and at home on nice d-pads.

Everyone pretty much acknowledged the importance of playing fighters against each other with decent controllers/sticks. It was just like... default knowledge.

You went over to a friend's place to play a fighter, uh oh, he has a shitty third-party controller as his extra. Who gets stuck with the shitty controller? Okay, we take turns with it. We hand off the inadequate controller for a round each; share the punishment.

Anyway, I digress. There are just some genres and game types where yes, input device really does matter.

As Eurogamer put it today:

"It's worth noting how fiddly the Joy-Con are for Street Fighter and, I suspect, any fighting game. I used the Joy-Con slotted into their grip, and found the up, down, left and right buttons, which replace the standard d-pad, almost impossible to use with any accuracy. The thumb stick is the lesser of two evils. My thumb slips off of it occasionally, and I suffer frustrating execution errors as a result. The Pro Controller, which has a proper d-pad, is the way to go, but you're looking at an extra £60 on top of an already ridiculously-priced game."

Get the Pro controller for Switch, or forget about 2D fighters!

Played Garou and SF2.

Joy-Cons are absolutely shit for 2D fighters.

Plenty of other titles/game types that play well on Switch.

Forget about 2D fighters until/if a better controller or arcade stick comes around.

Why spend time fighting with the actual input device, when you can be enjoying the game with an adequate controller on another platform?

The "idea" of retro SNK and Capcom fighters on Switch may sound cool to you, but do yourself a favor and enjoy the precise 2D movement/attacks using an input device better suited to what the original designers of these games envisioned.

That's not a Joy-Con.

cheaper to buy a retropie than get miked with these old game prices (4 games for £10) or £1 each would be better even the indie games are far more expensive than other consoles/pc (by £2-£3). Roll on some new games like Mario Odyssey and splatoon 2 (even street fighter 2 is an overpriced dinosaur) least i got mario kart to play and finish zelda off (if I can be arsed as got bored of it after 2 hours) expect all capcoms old catalog to be milked.

@xolivierx: I'd pay up to 10$ for Virtual Consoles titles if they were my "type" of games...
It's not the price the problem it's the titles which are sub-par.

@LethalBurst: Nope cause there's also Magician Lord, Nam 1975, Last Resort, Magical Drop series, Alpha Mission II, Baseball Stars, and the Sengoku series. They had other genre of games but a lot of them were mostly fighting games and shooters at most. If you're a fan of platformers, RPGs, RTS, and racing titles then you will be slightly disappointed with the NeoGeo platform.

@LethalBurst: because back in the 90s, fighting games were very popular at the arcades--- at least in Asia anyhow. And Neo-Geo is a "home arcade" console. Same thing with a ton of Mario knockoffs aka platformers on nes and snes. Also Metal Slugs is a classic.

Wish the KOF games were offered in a compilation package like they were for the Wii and PS2 instead of being sold individually.

@computernoises: They've made many articles on PS4's older FFVII and they surely will make another one when it's released, so I don't know what the problem with KoF and Switch is....

EDIT: Also this was probably supposed to go as a reply to agramonte, but it's here now.

@metallinatus: well, FF7 is an actual remake of a classic... they just not releasing the original game., so you have a bit more curiosity. If they did King of fighter 99 HD - I can see it a bit more. But this is an as-is code dump of a 20 year old game.

@metallinatus:

Kind of an apples and oranges comparison that you're making here.

Sure, they're both articles about old games being added to new hardware. But one is widely considered to be one of the greatest games of all time (FFVII - even though I think the game is wildly overrated) while the other scored a 67 on Metacritic when it was released in 1999. I find it hard to believe that it's stood the test of time.

The point being made here is every obscure, decades old title being added to Nintendo's eShop is not newsworthy.

Just as an example, there are almost 900 games out on the PS4 according to Metacritic. Many of them are ports of older games and not a few of them are pretty bad.

http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/score/metascore/all/ps4/filtered?page=8

You don't see a separate article every time a new game from long ago is added to the PSN store. You see one when it is a significant, important game like FFVII.

@metallinatus:

If by privilege you mean "is widely considered to be a timeless classic and therefore it being ported to a new system is newsworthy" then yes, that's why I'm saying it can pass.

My point is...there are nearly 900 games out on the PS4. Not all of them are considered newsworthy enough to get their own article. Otherwise this site would be covered with spam talking about each and every new game out of those nearly 900 added to the store. So why is every new game added to the Nintendo eShop considered worthy of an article?

Unless you think that EVERY new game added to Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo's online store deserves it's own article? I'm guessing you definitely would not want 900 individual articles about each of the games out on the PSN store.

@agramonte: not really, eshop is nice. fast rmx, mr shifty, wonder boy, shovel knight, snipperclips, disgaea 5, mario kart 8, botw, tumbleseed, nba playgrounds, snake pass, lego city undercover, binding of isaac, along with many other games is decent for first 2 months. the neo geo titles play really nicely too and most are good games. maybe if people actually played the games they buy they would realize there is some good value here that can last them many months and more is coming every week.

@Bread_or_Decide: I was thinking something similar...

At the pace at which they're "re-releasing" old titles from Neo-Geo they might as well call it the "Neo-Geo Switch".

If they are to recycle old games why not do so with Nintendo Titles on a nintendo console?
Kind of Virtual Console.

Bring Back FF6, Chrono Trigger, Harvest Moon, Earthbound, Top Gear, Mario Games, Zeldas, Donkey Kong Countries, Star Fox, SimCity, MegaMans, Final Fights and all the best from Snes at ±10$ a piece and you'd be surprised at the sales numbers!

I would fill my switch with these for sure!

I recently wanted to play through old final fantasies and chrono trigger, I had to get them on my Vita.
I wished I could grab them on the switch instead...

@silv3rst0rm:

On the Wii there were quite a few Squaresoft titles on VC.
-Final Fantasy
-Final Fantasy II (4)
-Final Fantasy III (6)
-Secret of Mana
-Super Mario RPG
-Ogre Battle 64
-Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen
-Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
-Chrono Trigger
-Kings Knight

I'm not sure about Wii U though. I never owned one. You can buy Wii VC titles on your Wii U though!

@doctor_mg: I'm drooling.

They definitely weren't on the Wii U for having checked a couple of times!
But yeah, I never tought of switching from Wii U to Wii's dashboard to go to the original Wii's Store.

I wonder why can't they make one common Nintendo store for all platforms that we play our digital purchases on.

Instead of having it as an internal feature via a console update and have a different one for the 3DS, the Wii, the Wii U and the Switch, just make it a universal app compatible to all platforms.

A VC game I'd buy on Wii U should be availble on 3DS, Wii, Wii U, Switch.

A bit like a mobile game you buy on Ipad, you can use it on Ipod, Iphones, etc...

It's a pain to lose all our digitals going from one console generation to another.

I'm pretty sure if they do bring the Nintendo's VC to the Switch, we'll have to buy the same games again for it if we want them.

Games you buy on Steam can carry on when you migrate to different OS / Hardware / Desktop or Laptop and you can keep them for as long as you want...

@silv3rst0rm:

Yeah, VC on the Wii was dope. I think Nintendo didn't want to renew licenses for a bunch of titles on the Wii U due to lack of sales and maybe demand. It can't be that expensive though.

I hope that they allow transferring of VC titles like they did Wii to Wii U. I never owned a Wii so I probably wont be able to transfer the VC titles over, but I agree with your idea. They just need an easy online VC store (they could even offer a few of their games on mobile devices if they want for extra dough). They can make the VC store completely separate from the eShop if they want. In fact, I'd prefer that. Just an application titled Virtual Shop that syncs up with a plethora of devices.

@Bread_or_Decide: Nintendo's VC not being on the Switch yet is the only thing that prevents me from getting rid of my Wii U...
There's too many VC games I bought for it to just waste it...
But, even bringing the VC wouldn't be "enough".
Nintendo VC has always been missing some of the very best titles.

I wonder if it's because some Game Publishers are too greedy and would want a too big share of the sales to give Nintendo the "rights" to bring them back?
Or if it's a matter of exclusivity that Square got with Sony/MS or whatever...
I just feel ironic that I have to rely on a Sony device to play Snes games so far...
(PS Vita allows me to play most of Square games, even from the 16 bits nintendo era...)
