Nintendo Switch EShop Adds Another New Game Today

Metal Slug joins the fray.

The Nintendo Switch's lineup of digital games grows a bit further today in the US with the system's third new game of the week.

Today's release is the classic game Metal Slug. It comes as part of the ACA NeoGeo series, of which there are now nine on the eShop--including another game from the franchise, Metal Slug 3. You can pick up any of the NeoGeo games, including Metal Slug, for $8 (£6.29) from the eShop.

This is the third new game of the week on the eShop. Unlike Metal Slug, which is a port of an existing game, the other two were completely new: Has-Been Heroes and Snake Pass. Each of those costs $20 (or £16 for Snake Pass; the former hasn't been released in the UK yet).

We've seen at least a few games debut on the eShop each week since the Switch's launch earlier this month. Last week saw a trio of games, while the week prior was highlighted by The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+.

This is an excellent port of Metal Slug 3, which is probably the best of the Metal Slug series. I love how well these Neo Geo games run on the switch. Plus the price is excellent!

Why not just release metal slug 6? So tired of Metal slug 1-3. And out of the King of fighters saga they picked 98 and not 2000 and up? I mean there's also a improved version of KOF98 on the PS2 which was only released in japan if anyone needs to be informed. I'm more interested in them rolling out Virtua Console games since i skipped Wii and Wii U.

I bought it for my previous Nintendo system(s) from the eStore. I'm not buying it again. Stop scamming people, Nintendo. Any game(s) customers bought from the Nintendo eStore (NES, SNES, Gameboy Advance, etc) should be available to re-download and play for the Nintendo Switch. Otherwise, what's the point of having a Nintendo account?

$8 is a bit expensive for Metal Slug.

I want some Nintendo classics in this eshop. My daughter has brought be back to the good old days of gaming. I haven't played a Nintendo system in years because they've all gone batshit crazy over there. The Switch however seems like one person in that company snuck a good idea into production. Let's keep rolling with it. Let's bring out things THEY KNOW we want and not what their Insanely stubborn Japanese elders say they should.

Let's stop fluking the success now Nintendo and just do it right.

I hope instead releasing trash games they just focus on release the virtual console as quickly as possible .

@ninjaguiden78: Technically, they already have the Virtual Console on the Switch, if you count the Neo Geo games they released so far. Still waiting on the other consoles, to include hopefully the Gamecube.

Wished the the Metal Slug Anthology, SNK Arcade Classics, Samurai Shodown Anthology and the King of Fighters Collection came to the Switch instead of offering these games individually.

Metal Slug was a great series. As good as the original Contra was for me. I'd be interested in playing Metal Slug again to see if I still love it as much but on my PC. I'm not paying 300+ dollars for a portable console to play a game I enjoyed as a early teenager. I bought the switch, tried it for about 20 hours and sold it.

I was on the fence about selling it, right until I docked it and saw how horrible it looked on my 55inch 4k TV. Even portable it's just okay and I wouldn't use it much for that purpose. If Nintendo would have charged 100 dollars more? Made it more powerful to play current AAA games? With graphics above resolution from 2008 it would have been a winner. I can see why some like it and I understand sales are good now.

But those sales will drop badly once the Switch gets out in the market more. Long term sales I expect the Switch to sit slightly above lifetime Wii U sales. People who don't like the Switch or what you like Nintendo fans usually aren't trolling. We just don't like it for logical reasons you won't accept.

3DS XL is the only great Nintendo system they have released in years for gamers. The Wii U I liked but didn't make much sense with it's design. The Wii was a gimmick machine that focused mainly on mainstream people who were non gamers. I'd argue the Game Cube was the last great console Nintendo made for it's fans and gamers. I'd also say it had the best design of any console ever as well.

The fact is Nintendo is getting by with it's greatness of the distant pass, and found childhood memories. We all loved the N64, Super Nintendo and Original NES. However the past 15 years they had made some very questionable moves and abandoned their core fans. If you take away the lightning in the bottle that was the Wii? Just ouch.

If you don't have a switch and have no interest in getting one, why are you coming to these kinds of articles?

Soooo....

The latest console : The NeoGeo Switch could apparently play some nintendo games in the future!

xD

(I'm not bitchin', I have one myself and I like it... I just wonder what's up with all these NeoGeo titles...?)

Lol so this is what the switch has to offer 20 year old games that u can play like anywhere else .. for $300 ..I just don't get it

Avatar image for fig56
fig56

@spectrexr1: You can get a PS4/XboxOne that plays old games for the same price. What's your point?p

Avatar image for angrycreep
angrycreep

@fig56: Even better get a PC emulator that can play any of those games for the total price of astutely nothing. The king of the emulators MAME can play any metal slug games and thousand more Arcade games for nothing.

Avatar image for fig56
fig56

@angrycreep: No. The Switch is way smaller and more convenient than carrying around a laptop or a PC.

Avatar image for angrycreep
angrycreep

@fig56: You don't seem to know much about this things. You can use just about any PC emulator in most of your current if you have them portable devices like PSP, PS Vita, IPhone, IPod Touch, 3DS and others. I have a PSP with a bunch of emulators pre install for Arcades, super Nintendo, NES, Genesis. I have a 3DS with emulators too

Avatar image for fig56
fig56

@angrycreep: Pffft. Emulator? Scum of the Earth confirmed. Moving on.

Avatar image for angrycreep
angrycreep

@fig56: Because you are so dumb and stupid in case you just don't know you are also playing a console emulator and the games are being emulated to play in their game console, is basically an emulation and the only deference are that they are charging you to play the game in their consoles emulator. You are practically paying to play something that you can get with you own emulator and play for free. Scum of the earth is your pure stupidity.

Avatar image for fig56
fig56

@angrycreep: I don't talk to emulation scum bags like you. Blocked and moving on.

Avatar image for angrycreep
angrycreep

@fig56: Well blocked yourself too ignorant meat brain. moving on.

Avatar image for doom299
Doom299

@fig56: The point is you can get a PS4, Xbox One S between 199.99-299.99 the same cost as the switch to play Triple AAA games that are new while still playing the old games. Not to mention Xbox is coming out with a game service for 9.99 a month. Both libraries of games at about 50 times greater.

So unless you need a portable option to shut the kids up in the back seat? I don't see the point of the Switch. I have a gaming laptop for portable use and that makes me understand the Switch even less.

Avatar image for fig56
fig56

@doom299: Good for you and your laptop. I guess your not Nintendo's target demographic. Move on.

Avatar image for zerohournow

@fig56: Is someone expressing less than fanboy enthusiasm for your console? Don't worry, you'll be fine. Move on.

Avatar image for fig56

@zerohournow: My console? Unlike your poor self I can actually afford more than one console. By the way your ignorance is showing.

Avatar image for spectrexr1

@fig56: a Xbox one or ps4 has more to offer than just the old games seems like all the switch has to offer as far as 3rd party games are these old small titles ...so why pay $300 and they just announced that the games are going to cost more on the switch because of the sd card format ..crazy paying more for less

YES!!! Can't wait to play Metal Slug on the Switch...it's going to be so much better than it was on the PS3 and Xbox 360...and Wii...and Steam....and my Launchbox. Another system seller! Keep up the great work!

Btw, I love Metal Slug...definitely a great way to make 45 minutes quickly disappear on a plane.

Let's hope Nintendo announces something interesting for you at E3 then. No one should have to wait 6 months between releases they want to play.

I love the fact that the Switch is getting Neo Geo games. This makes it more appealing to old school gamers and games who never had a chance to experience what the Neo Geo offered. I only wish that Switch continues to further expand their eShop, and once their Virtual Console is online, they work hard to keep that library growing. There's definite appeal in the Switch, but Nintendo has got to stop being complacent.

Avatar image for inkman66

@JustPlainLucas Fitting.....seeing how the NeoGeo was also an overpriced console with a very limited library.

I'd say to eschew the clickbaity titles if you actually had meaty journalism worth reading, but it seems you need to garnish and generate your clicks in other fashions.

Real title suggestion: "Nintendo Switch eShop Gets Metal Slug Port"

Would like to see a Metal Slug re-hash. Hell I'd like to see a lot of Neo Geo gems redone for current gen, but they are still great in their own right
