Nintendo Switch Could Be a "Game-Changer," May Have Motion Controls, GameStop Says

Yet another industry member praises Nintendo's new console.

[UPDATE] GameStop CEO Paul Raines also suggested during the call that the Nintendo Switch may have some kind of motion controls.

"The Switch is a very interesting device.... A movement-related game is more fun for kids, you know, taking those [Joy-con controllers off] and then the master controller, you can really do a lot of interesting things with that in gameplay."

"I think it has tremendous potential as a game-changer. We'll have to wait and see. Like everything else in this industry, the consumers will vote with their dollars."

The original story is below.

After the Wii U underperformed, retailer GameStop appears to be optimistic about Nintendo's Switch console. Speaking during an earnings briefing today, CEO Paul Raines revealed that he played the console and came away impressed.

"The Nintendo Switch, which I played at Nintendo a few weeks ago--we believe could be another game-changer that will expand the audience for gaming," the executive said.

Also during the call, management said early metrics show that GameStop PowerUp Rewards members are aware of, and interested in, the system. Twenty-seven percent of GameStop's PowerUp Rewards members who are aware of the Nintendo Switch plan to buy the console, the company said. This pre-launch purchase intent metric is in line with that of the Xbox One at a similar point in time.

The company pointed out that this figure could go higher after Nintendo's Switch news event in January. During that event, Nintendo will announce the console's price, specs, and launch lineup.

Raines is just the latest to praise the Nintendo Switch, as Skyrim director Todd Howard recently said he played the console at E3 this year and was blown away. "Probably the best demo I've ever seen," he said. The day that the Switch was announced, October 20, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said the console has the potential to "redefine" gaming.

The Switch goes on sale in March 2017. In other news, GameStop suggested today that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild may come out in March alongside the console.

GameStop's latest earnings report wasn't what the company wanted to see, as revenue and profit fell year-over-year due in part to decreased game sales. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was called out as a game that underperformed.

I don't garner anything from that quote that would lead me to believe there would be "motion controls". He says something about movement-related gaming which honestly just sounds like a strange way to say mobile in the context of his statement.

The WiiU had the power of a 10 year old PC, and hardly any AAA exclusives.

What could go wrong?

All they have to do to get back in, is up the power, and crank out exclusives, like they used to.

@naotasback: You talk like Nintendo games are not AAA games and they are exclusives to their system, you meant third party AAA exclusives.

Posted a similar post further down but just want to sum up things a little because I read alot of post about Nintendo consoles only playing Mario, being underpowered or whatever and other trash talk like that. Don't get me wrong I like all consoles not just Nintendo but just think they gotten a lot of unfair shit lately and just want to correct this.

This is all their IP:s for the Wii and Wii U respectively, you can find many IP:s you're used to there like call of duty, assassins creed, mass effect etc, but also many you are not used to that where made exclusively for the Nintendo console:

Here is some recent games for Nintendo consoles that are likely to get sequels to the Nintendo Switch mostly because most of these titles are own by Nintendo as subsidiary companies:

And yeah as I said the Wii U produced this (Can make a similar list but this one just blows you mind so is satisfied whit just naming this game):

Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii):

(Notice that the Character is custom made by the player and everything you see is not a movie but the game itself).

* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xb45yEoqc9U

Xenoblade Chronicles X is also an Open world game, in other worlds the whole game is one big open area of 400 km^2 where you can go anywhere, climb anything, everything you see anywhere is something you can walk, climb or get to. Nothing is really rendered in the background.

So should you buy the Switch, yes it will probably be a great console and you will likely have a great time whit it. And yeah it's a great time now to as the switch seems to have some pretty neat features and they will also release a really big new Zelda title that they have putting alot of effort into among many other games.
So does this mean you should not get a ps4 or and xbox one? Not at all, it's more about if you find games you like on either of those platforms. For example for me the heavy rain series is a great reason to get a play station console. But yeah that is just me.
Still I think Nintendo consoles are unique and have their own strength and produce a lot of impressive games in their own right.
And guys, please don't reply whit a lot of insults. It's just so unnecessary.

A company who only exist to sale games and consoles!

i could only think 2 companies who might tell u to not buy switch: its direct competitors, sony and microsoft. but then again, phil spencer was pretty cool about most things -including complimenting microsoft's rival companies.

that leaves sony. so u're telling me that everyone besides sony fanboys are vegetebles?

most are better versions than their PS2 ports.

not white knighting nintendo or anything, just pointin out what u've missed. gamecube is actually the last console where nintendo tried pretty hard to be the most powerful with many third party support. So you morons just want a 3rd console on the market that can play all the AAA games you can currently play on the ps4 and xbone? What's the point in that?

Nintendo set their own trends instead of following others. Whether they bomb or not they stick to their own vision of gaming. The switch will be powerful enough to compete with current gen and it'll have the exclusives we all know and love running on hardware that will take them to new levels we haven't seen on previous Nintendo systems. That's good enough for me

I havent even mentioned the portability side of things yet. That's just an added bonus for me if I ever wanna take my current game on the road

Avatar image for _sa_

@shannybaybay:what's the main difference between a ps4 and xbone? realistically.

yes, halo and uncharted. forza and GT. quantum break and horizon zero dawn. it's the exclusives.

both consoles could play fifa, mgs, gta, withcer, etc. it's the exclusives that made the difference between those two.

IF hypothetically nintendo decide to join the arms race and make a mindless brute force console, there shouldn't be any problem.

it'll just changes the battlefield from:
halo vs uncharted. forza vs GT. quantum break vs horizon zero dawn.
to:
halo vs uncharted vs zelda. forza vs GT vs mario kart. quantum break vs horizon zero dawn vs metroid.

what's wrong with having metal gear on your console? or the witcher? why did nintards hate triple A games so much? having mario is great, but having mario AND lara croft, that's what will sell our beloved company's console.
i will never understand nintard's love for underpowered console. if one day nintendo want to join the arms race, i will support them as i've always done all this time.

@shannybaybay: due to Nintendos history of having 3rd parties announce big games only to have them turnaround and release subpar versions or no version at all of the same games has people wary. The Switch may be a nice second console depending on the games and how it actually performs after its released.

I read here and there people writing the Wii U under performed. Think this is a little bad way to say it as there seems to lead to alot of confusion. The Wii U was released a couple of years after the ps3 and because of this they had access to much newer components.

The result was that the Wii U:s hardware was around 20x more powerful than the ps3 so when it camed out so in terms of hardware it didn't under perform at all. For example the ps3 had 256 MB, the xbox had 512 MB of ram while the Wii U had 2 GB of ram. Similar comparisons can be made by all other internal components. So at that time it was the most powerful console on the market.

Besides that it had great functionality, you could play games on the gamepad or on the tv, it was you're choise, it had all the features of the Nintendo DS whit the touch sceen etc, it had build in gyro censor in the gamepad.

It had a superb constant lineup of games. For example the biggest open world game Xenoblade Chronicles X was for the Wii U, I personally also consider it to be the looking to simply because the art work, the brand new game engine that where used etc (games like fallout 4 uses a really old engine):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvpNXhzscjQ

The only thing the Wii U really under performed in was sales, much because it was miss interpreted as an accessory for the Wii instead of a brand new console.

And yeah as of today Nintendo haven't made a bad control, rather the opposite, they have been the first to introduce new concepts. Even the analog stick that is so common today was something Nintendo originally invented.

@alan_wake1: I don't see what this proves. It's a manipulated trailer of star fox? Here's the real one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6PEecNY0Sc

And you are comparing a shooter whit a flight game. But yeah, there is just no way a system whit 256 MB of ram could at all compete in performance whit a system whit 2GB of ram? The processor everything is just so much more powerful in the Wii U.

Here's a comparission of the same shooter running on both systems:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHjYs9Qckq4

But still it's hard to compare as games that are running fine on the Wii U like Xenoblade Chronicles X would never ever run on ps3.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OEDfvQxdjc

On ps4 on the hand it's a different story, that console is never and thereby more powerful.

But yeah it will never be released there as Nintendo owns Monolith Software.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

@timetraveler_x: The Wii U was not made to compete with the Playstation 3, it was meant to compete with the Playstation 4 and Xbox One. That is why it's a weak piece of crap. It underperformed because it sold horribly - less than the PS3/Xbox360 and less than the PS4/Xbone despite having over a year head start.

To try and spin the failure of the Wii U as a success takes a serious level of delusion.

"as of today Nintendo haven't made a bad control"

Star Fox Zero shows otherwise, as do the dozens of games over the years ruined by shoehorned motion controls and other gimmicks (like Okami). Have you ever tried to play a game with a sideways Wiimote? One of the worst control experiences I've ever had. The thing is the size of a Snickers bar.

Avatar image for timetraveler_x

No think you got that backwards. The Wii U was released in 2012:

https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_U

The PS4 and XBOX waited a full year and then released their new consoles whit a little more ram and processor power. It's reasonable to guess they waited to see what type of specs the Wii U had and then just doubled that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_4

So when it was released the only thing you could compare to was the ps3. But yeah my point was just for comparison as many people seems to have sort of an incorrect picture of a consoles capabilities. Some people thing the ps3 for example is more powerful than the Wii U.

And in term of power I think a console should be evaluated for what it produce not just for simple specs, most people don't really understand specs anyway, for example the Xbox One got a faster buss than the ps4 but yeah no one understands this anyway so what does it matter while the Wii U have a much faster hard drive than both of them together and a completely different set of algorithms for their graphic unit.

For example Xenoblade Chronicles was released for the Wii U and had a world of 400km^2 and looked just amazing so I would call that performing pretty well.

And yeah I would not consider a game ruined because it uses motion controls, rather the opposite as it made things easier, shooters became more responsive, you got party games, a lot of other new game concepts where born because of this, and yeah just the simple thing of having a bear and do some living room bowling is not all that bad.

For example Okami got 9/10, I would call that a pretty asome game:

http://www.ign.com/games/okami/wii-884970

Here's are some other totally asome games just for the Wii (Wii uses 88 MB of ram and I can name alot more):

Xenoblade Chronicles:

@timetraveler_x: "No think you got that backwards. The Wii U was released in 2012:"

Yes, the first of the next generation of consoles. Also spoilers: the PS4 was not released to compete with the Xbox 360.

"And in term of power I think a console should be evaluated for what it produce not just for simple specs,"

Good. Then look at the current gen multiplatform games released (or more notably, the ones NOT released) on the Wii U, and their reduced performance or complete inability to run on the system.

"For example Xenoblade Chronicles was released for the Wii U and had a world of 400km^2 and looked just amazing so I would call that performing pretty well."

I assume you're talking about X, not the first one, and if you had actually played it you know that large draw distance comes with huge drawbacks, notably the insane about of texture pop in the game suffers from, as well as significantly reduced framerate when things are happening close by. The game does look beautiful but the performance of the system is not the reason.

"For example Okami got 9/10, I would call that a pretty asome game:"

It was a 10/10 game on the PS2. The Wii version introduced a litany of control problems to an existing perfect game. Most reviews mention this.

"Metroid other M"

Awesome game? Hahahhahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahhahahaahhahahahaha it's a disgrace.

"World of goo"

That wasn't even a Nintendo exclusive game.

"And yeah I would not consider a game ruined because it uses motion controls, rather the opposite as it made things easier"

Motion controls are not precise. That's why they ruin games. Waggle especially. "Easier"? Laughable. Dumbing something down does not make it better. It's like saying Tee Ball is better than Baseball because "it made things easier." Imagine playing a fighting game with motion controls.

@timetraveler_x: Wouldn't it make more sense to compare the Wii (2006) with the PS3 (2006)?

Comparing the Wii U (2012) to a console released 6 years prior doesn't make a lot of sense. Clearly the Wii U was meant to be a next generation console compared to the Wii, so it should be compared to the consoles of that generation; this being the PS4 and Xbox One, as the gap is only a one year difference.

Otherwise this would be the same as comparing the PS1 (1994) to the PS2 (2000).. or that to the PS3 (2006) and again to the PS4 (2013)

Its pretty obvious the system with 6 years of advancements is better than the previous, at least when it comes to raw specs.

That being said, I agree totally that the Wii U is a more advanced piece of technology that the PS3.

Its odd that anyone would even try and argue this.

@SnakekillerX:Think you missunderstand. The Switch is rumored to be a lot more powerful than the Wii U. And yeah, then it's reasonably to understand how much power the Wii U have.

But yes correct as you say:

The ps3 was more powerful than the Wii

The Wii U was more powerful than the ps3

The Xbox one and ps4 was more powerful than the Wii U.
