Nintendo Switch Cloud Saves Are Coming With Paid Online Service

Finally, Nintendo shares details about its subscription-based online membership.

As promised, Nintendo has shared more details on the Nintendo Switch online subscription service, which is due to roll out in September. A post on Nintendo's website explains that the service will offer "Save Data Cloud" backup, which sounds a lot like cloud saves.

This is great news, as it means you don't have to worry about losing progress. Cloud saves are available with Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus as well, along with Steam and others.

Additionally, you'll get access to a library of 20 NES games at launch, and more will be added "regularly," Nintendo says. This service is called "NES - Nintendo Switch Online," and the launch titles include the 10 listed below--including Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda--and 10 more to be announced later.

  • Soccer
  • Tennis
  • Donkey Kong
  • Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Balloon Fight
  • Ice Climber
  • Dr. Mario
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Super Mario Bros. 3

According to Nintendo, "every classic game" in the NES catalog will have some form of online functionality. "You can compete (or cooperate) online with friends, share your screen, or pass the controller, depending on the game," Nintendo said. Additionally, using a dedicated app for the Switch online service, you can use voice chat.

The Switch's paid membership program was originally supposed to launch in late 2017 before Nintendo delayed it to 2018. Subscriptions will be available for 1 month (US $4 / £3.49 / AU $6), 3 months (US $8 / £7 / AU $12), and 12 months (US $20 / £18 / AU $30). Additionally, a Family Membership will be available for US $35 / £31.49 / AU $55. The family plan allows a Nintendo Account holder to "invite up to seven others to join a family group," and every member of the group will have access to the online membership benefits.

By comparison, Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus cost US $60 / £50 (£40 for Xbox Live Gold) / AU $80 for a year.

No Caption Provided

Since launch, online play for all Switch games has been free. That will change in September when the paid service rolls out. At that time, you will need a membership to play Splatoon 2, Arms, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Tennis Aces, and Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido online. Other games may or may not require a membership, Nintendo said. Nintendo will share more details at a later date about how you will know if a game requires a paid membership or not.

Here are some other important details about the Nintendo Switch online membership, as pulled from a FAQ on Nintendo's website:

  • If you own multiple Switch consoles, you do not need a separate paid online subscription. "Nintendo Switch Online can be used on any device by signing in with the Nintendo Account that purchased the membership," Nintendo said.
  • Individual memberships are only available on the basis of one per Nintendo Account. But as mentioned, you can buy the $35 family plan to get a subscription for up to seven other Nintendo Accounts.
  • You can create a Nintendo Account Family Group starting on May 15. As mentioned, a family group can support up to eight Nintendo Accounts.
  • The Switch online membership only pertains to Switch; not Wii U or 3DS.
  • You don't necessarily need a Switch online membership, as things like access to the eShop, friend registration and management, and screenshot-sharing on Twitter and Facebook will remain available without a membership.

In other Nintendo news, the company has announced the date and time of its E3 2018 briefing, while it's also confirmed that the new Smash Bros. for Switch is playable on the show floor.

They'll re-release their old games...It just won't be under their Virtual Console name anymore.

I mean, with a console like the Switch, they would be stupid not to re-release their old games, especially their N64 games.

I have the Switch, enjoyed the VC etc., but I happen to dislike NES games. So this is bittersweet for me...

So the functionalities of the games I've already purchased are going to be stolen from me and I will have to pay every month in order to use a game that I already own. You can expect a class action lawsuit over this.

@so_hai: As the article states, you won't be able to play Splatoon 2, Arms, or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe without paying the subscription fee. Splatoon 2's entire point is online multi-player game play with only some tutorial levels of game play available offline.

@the_truth2_you: Agreed. All games sold before launch of this should be grandfathered and not require it. That is ridiculous.

Can't wait to play 8-bit sports games from 40 years ago, with generic teams that you can identify with.

While the Switch is very underpowered and low on memory space for a modern console I will say that $35 to have access to a decent library of Nintendo games is pretty neat.

Correction Gamespot: Cloud saves are available for free on Xbox One even with Live Silver Membership, wherein on PS4 you have to pay PS Plus for cloud saves.

I'm okay with their Virtual Classics 'Collection' strategy and tying that to a yearly subscription as long as they don't advance tiers that unlock additional collections at higher subscription rates. Doomsday would be Nintendo adding an SNES Classics Collection for an additional $5 dollars. Then N64 Collection for another $5 and GB/GBC, GBA, DS and so on in a similar manner.

It needs to be a flat rate for all classic libraries. Adding and removing titles periodically will get players talking about older games and playing those older games more regularly. Similar to Disney releasing their films semi annually on DVD/BD Disc it drives up their marketing value and is good publicity.

Funny! By the time they get this working, the switch will be fully broken and able to run ISOs.

Good times are coming... and it's nothing about this paid subscription cloud save nonsense.

It's amazing what some people can be conned into paying for...

@so_hai: yes, but that doesn't mean I am not allowed to complain about the company. When I bought it I was prepared to pay for a few games I wanted and in the mean time wait for it to be able to run game images.

I can't understand what's wrong with you people, gladly paying $60 !!! full retail price for old games re-released for this handheld, casual gaming intended console. It's outrageous... Sadly it's not even nintendo's fault for being greedy, it's because everyone is a sheep and just complies and throws their money for whatever they are asking for...

@graphicsdriver: You can complain, but you just need to be consistent. If you support Nintendo by buying their product, then go on to subvert their system by hacking it, you've excluded yourself from the conversation.

@dashaka:

Although CFW would mean you could play hundreds of games that you simply couldn't buy even if you wanted to. Nes, Game Boy, DS, Master System, Mega Drive, Snes, Amiga, Atari, N64, Playstation, PSP, Game Cube.

Not to mention the fan translations of Japanese games that never see a release; ports of classics like Doom, Duke or Quake.

Streaming software from your PC to your Switch, Linux, Android.

We shouldn't all have to be so quick to throw our money at corporations, just because we can, for the crumbs they decide we should be thankful they throw us in return.

Having a decent job has nothing to do with wanting the full functionality of a device that would not be possible if left simply to the business model.

If these corporations wanted to curb the piracy and morally questionable use of emulation they should offer comparable services at a comparable value. Streaming illegally is simple, pirating PC software equally so, and yet apps like Netflix or Steam turn healthy profits regardless for a reason.

@dashaka: sure, whatever you have to tell yourself to feel that it's worth spending your money.

On the other hand I'm very angry at nintendo for making us pay full retail aaa title price for games meant to be used casually on a handheld device. Because of this, I will have zero regrets playing everything on the switch once it gets full broken...

@graphicsdriver: I don’t have to tell myself anything, it’s a non issue. Have fun stealing sh*t.

Only thing I agree with is these indie games that sell for $40 when they’re being sold for $2-$5 on PC. I hope people steal those, as a few devs ARE being greedy, but I have no problem paying for most new IP indie games and actual big game releases.

@Xristophoros: I don’t want to touch my Wii U ever again. I don’t want to touch my 3DS again, except for the few upcoming games that I intend to play. I want to play every game on the Switch, and this includes all the NES games from my childhood. Does this answer your question?

@simevidas: yes, n64, gamecube and wii games would be a good start. not every game is going to get the hd remaster treatment.... even some recent indie games thrown in would be nice. nintendo is doing the bare minimum here and i feel like they could be offering much more at their price point. even one decent game a month, but something more recent than nes/snes is all i expected from them but they couldn't even manage that.

@doctor_mg: sorry, but you cannot isolate cloud saves from ps+ when you receive a bunch of games each month, many of which are very good and worth $30 or more... using the $60 argument is apples to oranges comparison.

And with Nintendo’s online you get access to a large constantly updated retro library, as well as other features (e.g. game deals) for a third of the price. I don’t see the problem and I don’t see why you’re trying to be so critical.

I loved the Virtual Console back on the Wii days. I gladly payed $5 for NES and $8 for SNES games. Well, maybe not gladly, but if I consider the time value of entertainment I got from each one, it was worth it. Now I'll have access to a lot of VC games with some improved functionality thrown in for $20/yr? I'll gladly pay that with no complaints.

“Other games may or may not require a membership” ala PSN? There’s a few dozen games I can play online on the PS4 that doesn’t require PSN+. So I’m guessing Nintendo is following suit... or you need a membership to play Mario Kart 8 D but not Fast RMX (which I play quite often). I hope so... because Nintendo hasn’t shown me anything that would make this $20 fee worth it. Especially by F-ing up something as simple as voice chat.
