Nintendo Switch Adds First Classic Nintendo Game Today

Arcade Archives: Mario Bros. is now available.

It may not be the Virtual Console service that Nintendo Switch owners have been waiting for, but the first classic Nintendo game is now available for the console. Today, the arcade classic Mario Bros. arrives in the Switch Eshop, kicking off Nintendo's newly announced line of Arcade Archives titles.

Mario Bros. is one of Nintendo's earliest titles, originally releasing in arcades in 1983. Up to two players can compete or cooperate with each other as Mario and Luigi, guiding the plumbers around a single screen and defeating enemies as they emerge from pipes. Unlike later Mario games, however, players can't jump directly on enemies to dispatch them; rather, you need to punch the floor beneath them to turn them over, then kick them before they can regain their footing.

No Caption Provided

While Mario Bros. has been ported and remade for various consoles throughout the years, the Arcade Archives version reproduces the visuals as they appeared in arcades and allows two players to play together using a single Joy-Con each. The port is handled by Hamster, the studio responsible for the slate of ACA Neo Geo titles. Like those games, Mario Bros. retails for $8/£6.29.

Nintendo announced a slew of other Arcade Archives games for Switch during its most recent Direct broadcast earlier this month. These include Vs. Super Mario Bros., Vs. Balloon Fight, Vs. Ice Climber, Vs. Pinball, and Vs. Clu Clu Land. However, the company hasn't revealed pricing or release details for any of those titles yet. Meanwhile, this week's batch of new Switch games is scheduled to arrive Thursday, September 28, and features the charming golfing RPG Golf Story and Picross S, among many others.

$8, good God. I'm not sure I'd pay $1. The game is 35 years old.

@kickrockser: First you need to press the L button to add at least two credits. Then press start (R button) on player 2's controller and you should be good to go!

Nope definitely not buying a Switch now. I spent well over $100 on SNES and Nes titles on the Wii U...if they are charging full retail again rather than an upgrade price for games I already bought.. **** you Nintendo. I'm done with your underpowered overpriced consoles and ecosystem.

I got all your legacy games anyway running perfectly on my PC. Just a few small zip files of complete libraries that are relatively fast downloads....

@mbrogz3000:

I think you are overreacting. There has been no mention of VC yet, let alone if you will have to purchase them again to use on Switch.

This particular arcade game was never released on any Virtual Console.

$8 is 32 quarters. It’s worth it if you try to beat it at least 33 times ;)

When will Nintendo get their act together? First, they promised NES, SNES, N64 and Gamecube classics on Wii. That only partially happened.

Then they tried it over with the Wii U, but made you rebuy everything you bought on Wii. And they never got around to Gamecube games.

Now they want us all to buy the games all over again for the Switch. Sorry, Nintendo. You've lost my confidence. I'll be keeping my Wii U for the virtual console.

@mmpr7: Except they don't want you to buy the games for the Switch... they ALSO want you to buy the Classic consoles, too!

So Nintendo is going to release NES mini, SNES mini, N64 mini and Gamecube mini. Then after all of that madness passes they will start releasing all the games sold on the minis on the Switch VC and everyone will buy them all over again. GENIUS!!!!!! smh

@olddadgamer: I edited the price because it was wrong to type £8 when it wasn't. The LOL was not required to be edited, it still applies.

I had a port of this on my Atari 800.

It was a pirated program that was hand coded on an 8 inch floppy disk that went into the attachable disk drive for the 800.

Old-school pirating was as simple as just duplicating the source code.

Man I remember this game! I'm still mad that my little brother would IMMEDIATELY hit the POW three times, thus wasting it.

That's right, little brother. 34 year old grudge. Gaming grudges never die.

@shadowwarrior4: You're right. You're right. Brotherly love should win out. I shouldn't focus on this. Or that he swiped all my Reese's cups that one Halloween. Or that he crashed my senior prom as a sophomore cuz he was dating...***rage intesifies*** or that time in 1997...OR....

Ok. Breathe. It's cool....totally....cool.....

Ok, gotta take my mind off the brother thing. Back to the article....Let's see....Mario BROTHERS.....

Crap.

@olddadgamer Yep...... my brother still laugh about how he used to run the same indefensible screen play in Intellivision to win every time. I would get so pissed.
