Nintendo Switch Adds First Classic Nintendo Game Today

Arcade Archives: Mario Bros. is now available.

It may not be the Virtual Console service that Nintendo Switch owners have been waiting for, but the first classic Nintendo game is now available for the console. Today, the arcade classic Mario Bros. arrives in the Switch Eshop, kicking off Nintendo's newly announced line of Arcade Archives titles.

Mario Bros. is one of Nintendo's earliest titles, originally releasing in arcades in 1983. Up to two players can compete or cooperate with each other as Mario and Luigi, guiding the plumbers around a single screen and defeating enemies as they emerge from pipes. Unlike later Mario games, however, players can't jump directly on enemies to dispatch them; rather, you need to punch the floor beneath them to turn them over, then kick them before they can regain their footing.

While Mario Bros. has been ported and remade for various consoles throughout the years, the Arcade Archives version reproduces the visuals as they appeared in arcades and allows two players to play together using a single Joy-Con each. The port is handled by Hamster, the studio responsible for the slate of ACA Neo Geo titles. Like those games, Mario Bros. retails for $8/£6.29.

Nintendo announced a slew of other Arcade Archives games for Switch during its most recent Direct broadcast earlier this month. These include Vs. Super Mario Bros., Vs. Balloon Fight, Vs. Ice Climber, Vs. Pinball, and Vs. Clu Clu Land. However, the company hasn't revealed pricing or release details for any of those titles yet. Meanwhile, this week's batch of new Switch games is scheduled to arrive Thursday, September 28, and features the charming golfing RPG Golf Story and Picross S, among many others.

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

$8, good God. I'm not sure I'd pay $1. The game is 35 years old.

@kickrockser: First you need to press the L button to add at least two credits. Then press start (R button) on player 2's controller and you should be good to go!

Nope definitely not buying a Switch now. I spent well over $100 on SNES and Nes titles on the Wii U...if they are charging full retail again rather than an upgrade price for games I already bought.. **** you Nintendo. I'm done with your underpowered overpriced consoles and ecosystem.

I got all your legacy games anyway running perfectly on my PC. Just a few small zip files of complete libraries that are relatively fast downloads....

@mbrogz3000:

I think you are overreacting. There has been no mention of VC yet, let alone if you will have to purchase them again to use on Switch.

This particular arcade game was never released on any Virtual Console.

$8 is 32 quarters. It’s worth it if you try to beat it at least 33 times ;)

When will Nintendo get their act together? First, they promised NES, SNES, N64 and Gamecube classics on Wii. That only partially happened.

Then they tried it over with the Wii U, but made you rebuy everything you bought on Wii. And they never got around to Gamecube games.

Now they want us all to buy the games all over again for the Switch. Sorry, Nintendo. You've lost my confidence. I'll be keeping my Wii U for the virtual console.

@mmpr7: Except they don't want you to buy the games for the Switch... they ALSO want you to buy the Classic consoles, too!

@olddadgamer: I edited the price because it was wrong to type £8 when it wasn't. The LOL was not required to be edited, it still applies.

I had a port of this on my Atari 800.

It was a pirated program that was hand coded on an 8 inch floppy disk that went into the attachable disk drive for the 800.

Old-school pirating was as simple as just duplicating the source code.

Man I remember this game! I'm still mad that my little brother would IMMEDIATELY hit the POW three times, thus wasting it.

That's right, little brother. 34 year old grudge. Gaming grudges never die.

@shadowwarrior4: You're right. You're right. Brotherly love should win out. I shouldn't focus on this. Or that he swiped all my Reese's cups that one Halloween. Or that he crashed my senior prom as a sophomore cuz he was dating...***rage intesifies*** or that time in 1997...OR....

Ok. Breathe. It's cool....totally....cool.....

Ok, gotta take my mind off the brother thing. Back to the article....Let's see....Mario BROTHERS.....

Crap.

@olddadgamer: Haha. Anyway I'm joking, I got that 2600 used later on anyway not in its heyday, but it was my first exposure to Mario (unless you count hacked giana sisters)! Kids here weren't allowed in arcades back then so I rarely got to play anything like that.

@girlusocrazy: Never got the 2600. :( But that's ok, not bitter. Really. Not. One. Bit.

My parents got me the Commodore 64, in the hope that I'd use it to learn programming and math and stuff and not games, because they SO did not want me playing games. And now I'm here and my fifth grader is better at math than I am. Take that, parents.

And they weren't keen on arcades, either. But the 5 & 10 on the way home always had five or six cabinets that they rotated. And what can I say? I preferred dropping quarters there than on the extra milk at school.

Especially because I got the one that said POW.

@olddadgamer: I feel blessed I got to experience the 2600 before trying the NES, just so I could appreciate it... That was my only system for the better part of a year, with about 30 games because people were dumping that bundle for $20 at a yard sale!

Haha, the C64 for productivity, that's the excuse kids would use to get it into the house... But we know 95% of the software for it was games... I think it took me less time to write out a report by hand than wait for the C64 to finish printing a page

@girlusocrazy: I know! My parents made the excuse FOR me!

Come to think of it, they also were the parents who were all "You really should start getting drunk here at home when you're 13. Better that than you start in college." I guess they were pushovers. Explains a lot, actually.

I hope you got to experience ET. Just to say you did.

@olddadgamer: Haha! My parents thought if I wanted to do that stuff, I should do it at home in front of them so they could make sure I was safe and responsible about it. But the look they gave me when they said that was "please please please god don't let the devil take my sweet little angel!" and "boy if you even think of that shit imma whoop your ass"

I saw ET (I hope you don't mean entertainment tonight) but my take-away was "haha penis breath" and "I want Reese's pieces"

I got an x86 w/CGA... And again like the 2600 it made me appreciate classics like Alley Cat Q-Bert and Space Quest 2 when I would have been otherwise distracted by Commander Keen and Jill of the Jungle and never touched those. My friend had a C64 so I got to enjoy that, another had an Atari ST, another an Amiga... Master System somewhere else... I'm lucky I got exposed to all that!

Oops, I just realized you meant ET the game... I honestly don't remember if I had it. My best memories were Galaxian, Mario Bros, Year's Revenge, Defender, Pole Position, Spy Hunter, Frogger, Donkey Kong Jr...

Oh! Once I walked into Toys R Us ready to get a NES game, and I saw a bin full of 2600 games for $5 each! I thought I was savvy with my money going through that bin and getting some games and then a Go-Bot too. Classic mistake. On both counts. But a good lesson.

If this is the closest we're getting to a virtual console, it's a big step back. Nintendo needs to up its game on this front and fast. Switch has been put half a year and lacks an essential service their last 3.5 consoles have
