Nintendo slashes 3DS prices

Handheld price drops to $169 in North America, by "around a third" in Europe; Nintendo to give 20 free GBA and NES Virtual Console games to early adopters.

In response to a financial statement that slashed the firm's full-year profit forecast and announced disappointing launch sales for the 3DS, Nintendo today announced it was cutting the price of its new handheld globally by up to 40 percent. These price cuts will come into effect on August 12, Nintendo said.

The 3DS price is being cut globally.
The 3DS price is being cut globally.

In Japan the price of the handheld is dropping 40 percent to ¥15,000; in the US it is dropping 32 percent to $169.00; and in Australia gamers will see the price drop 29 percent to AU$249.99. Gamers in Europe will hope to see similar reductions; Nintendo UK confirmed to GameSpot that the trade price of the console will be dropping by "around a third" but did not offer concrete information since exact pricing is set by retailers.

By way of compensation to those who have bought the handheld at the higher price, Nintendo also announced that it will be giving 20 free downloadable games for existing 3DS owners. While half of the games released as part of the so-called "Nintendo 3DS Ambassador" programme will be available on the Nintendo eShop at a later date, the company said, the other half will be exclusive to the early adopters.

Ten NES virtual console titles--including Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber, and The Legend of Zelda--will be released first to members of the programme and will appear on the Nintendo eShop at a later date. Programme members will also get 10 GBA virtual console games--including Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong--that Nintendo says it has no plans to release to the general public. Any 3DS owners who connect to the Nintendo eShop before midnight US Eastern time on August 11 will be automatically entered into the programme.

More details on the programme will be announced "in the future," Nintendo said.

I'm so dissaponted with the 3DS. I love the DS and I believe it's the best console of this generation (above ps3, 360, PSP and Wii) but the lineup of the 3DS is so weak it makes me really furious. Maybe with this price drop and good games, I'll consider buying one, but I won't keep my hope high.

@snake63 really ? the original game boy was a flop? the system that started the handheld era and beat out the other better more overpower systems the game gear & turbo graphics handheld what every it was named both in color and better processor and back lit oh and let us not forget about atari's lynx. next time lets try not to just impose your incorrect opinions and use facts like the only nintendo console with the name boy in it to fail was the virtual boy which wasn't even a handheld.....well i guess you could hold it if you had 4 hands.

@decoy1978 why is that a dumb move? The DS is still beating 3DS in sales which is sad. You know why? NOTHING is prompting the current gen to switch. Even with better games and 3d, that still wouldn't draw the crowd as long as that $250 price tag was there. DS is the greatest handheld of all time sales and content wise. One of the biggest reasons for that was it's low price. To beat that milestone you need a definitive promptor. Don't talk business when you know nothing of it.

Chico_Azteca, I don't think you will need too big of a card due to the fact that GBA games are like what.. 32 MB at most? You will be fine unless you get tons of others. Even so, I myself will be looking to get a bigger SD card soon too.

I'm kinda bitter that I can't afford a 3DS right now. Especially since, here in Canada, Future Shop has them on sale for $200 until Sunday. I wouldn't mind so much if it weren't for the fact that Nintendo has 'no plans' to release the GBA VC games for sale. If waiting meant that I'd have to pay for them if I wanted them, I would. But damn!

I for one bought the 3DS on launch day and never regretted it, I don't mind not having many 3DS titles because I still have all of my DS titles to play while I wait (I actually wore out my DS and DSi so I had to get a new one anyway) and to all of those people calling Nintendo greedy, I believe that you are just singeling them out because of who they are, Microsoft and Sony are just as bad if not worse. At least Nintendo gives away good games (unlike sony after the hacking fiasco) and basically gace us a $100 reimbursment, so I feel great to be an early adopter.

Weird how the 10 GBA games have no plans of being released to the e-Shop to newer 3DS owners.

Those of us who bought a 3DS did so with resignation to the fact that the price would drop, as all consoles do. ...I am pleasantly surprised that my early purchase will award me 20 free games! I... am actually ok with this deal!

@ zenverak Agreed, early adoption usually has a way more downsides than benefits which is why I now tend to shy away from it, but those anomolies do exist.

@endorbr What systems honestly have had many good launch titles? Not many. The N64 had a great line up for launch, but most don't.

3ds, main problem wasn't the price of handheld system, it was the game. Nothing really interesting came out yet, or near feature.

phail for nintendo for being ignorant , the 3d in 3ds was lame and the handheld wasn't able to do the thing it was marketed to do so , they had to slash prices otherwise they will gather dust on the shelves.

@zzmaro, So, posting an opinion with which you do not agree is trolling now, is it? Iwata's quote was, is and forever will be uninteresting and not very important. Nintendo is as greedy now as they've ever been.

Nintendo made the mistake of putting out a product with a marketing of strategy of buying into their own hype. You can't put out a new system without any real games and think it will sell because: "Hey, we're Nintendo and people will buy anything we're selling."

@ Metroidfire I'm not trying to get involved in a console war, and I don't even own a PS3, but I know that the first generation had backward-compatibility and could play PS2 games. A feature that has since been removed and is one of the largest reasons I refuse to buy one.

What I find so cool about this is that Nintendo could have just cut the price of the 3DS and called it a day. But they decided to go the extra mile and reimburse their customers who already paid the $250. That's extremely thoughtful and generous no matter how you slice it.

I love that some people thumbs down for decent logic. Just saying, with 300 dollars, I can buy ports for more USB ports, not that I really need more than two. My ps3 with two ports is more than enough.

Glad I bought early, but then again it did not take a rocket scientist to figure out that games would eventually come to the 3DS, now this is just an extra bonus for smart people I guess. Good move Nintendo.

300 dollars for a few ports and other features? if the ports mattered that much, you could just buy an adapter. I don't think many people would care to pay 300 dollars for that much more. Its not worth 300 dollars. Thats 6 decent games.

The 3ds standing has little to do with it. Business is business. People, as a whole basically said, we will not pay for that price. And so Nintendo did the smart move. Saying, We probably priced it too high, so now lets cut it and reward those who had it early. Not too hard to figure out. @slvrraven9 I did forget about all of that stuff, however, I would easily say 300 dollars is not worth all of that.

Low production cost. High retail price. It's a great way to make money, but only if the hype is strong enough. It was strong enough for the Wii, but I guess it isn't the same case for the 3DS.

@ zenverak the early ones had BC and 4 usb ports. something the new models are lacking. although they have bigger hdds....i wouldnt exactly call it an even trade. plus on a personal note, i like the shiny gloss finish over the matte flat new finish....but thats a minor comparison.
