Nintendo slashes 3DS prices

Handheld price drops to $169 in North America, by "around a third" in Europe; Nintendo to give 20 free GBA and NES Virtual Console games to early adopters.

In response to a financial statement that slashed the firm's full-year profit forecast and announced disappointing launch sales for the 3DS, Nintendo today announced it was cutting the price of its new handheld globally by up to 40 percent. These price cuts will come into effect on August 12, Nintendo said.

The 3DS price is being cut globally.
The 3DS price is being cut globally.

In Japan the price of the handheld is dropping 40 percent to ¥15,000; in the US it is dropping 32 percent to $169.00; and in Australia gamers will see the price drop 29 percent to AU$249.99. Gamers in Europe will hope to see similar reductions; Nintendo UK confirmed to GameSpot that the trade price of the console will be dropping by "around a third" but did not offer concrete information since exact pricing is set by retailers.

By way of compensation to those who have bought the handheld at the higher price, Nintendo also announced that it will be giving 20 free downloadable games for existing 3DS owners. While half of the games released as part of the so-called "Nintendo 3DS Ambassador" programme will be available on the Nintendo eShop at a later date, the company said, the other half will be exclusive to the early adopters.

Ten NES virtual console titles--including Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber, and The Legend of Zelda--will be released first to members of the programme and will appear on the Nintendo eShop at a later date. Programme members will also get 10 GBA virtual console games--including Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong--that Nintendo says it has no plans to release to the general public. Any 3DS owners who connect to the Nintendo eShop before midnight US Eastern time on August 11 will be automatically entered into the programme.

More details on the programme will be announced "in the future," Nintendo said.

I don't want old free nes and gameboy games... Give me a gift card to use on two new games instead. I had not regretted my day one purchase until now.

That removes all competition from Vita before it even comes out... and this is coming from someone who owns a PSP but not a DS.

If anything, this just shows desperation on Nintendo's part. No gaming company lowers the prices of their gaming handhelds or gaming consoles so soon after launch.

@Needles-Kane At least Nintendo didn't have a network crash because they were too lazy to update the security software... like some companies...

At first I was pissed because I JUST paid $250 for a 3DS only weeks ago, but to make up for it Nintendo is offering me 20 free NES and GBA games!?!? That's just plain awesome. Proof that Nintendo is still capable of being very generous to its customers, unlike a certain House of Mega Man company that shall not be named....

Oh ho ho. Confirmed buy from me now. I suppose I'll wait until the price actually drops, but those 20 free games are a pretty nice reimbursement.

Wow, that really says something. Feel bad for the early adopters, got burned bad, digital distribution doesn't make up for it. This should have been the original price but nintendo is the greediest and always get away with it. Just another lesson in not being an early adopter, paid off with the PS3 though so I guess you never know.

Use common sense. How many times have people been buying remade games? For a LONG time. And why? Because WE WANT TO. If people didn't want remade games, no one would buy them, plain and simple.

I know nintendo's history very well. I've owned all of those systems. Yes this cost more, but who cares? Do you know how much people pay for marked up items all the time? Most people don't. It is a solid system that has yet to have its a true original game for it. That is true, but there are still some fun games on it. I still fail to see this as oh... how greedy of them. As I said, 20 free games. if they are 5 dollars each, thats 100 dollars. thats more than the price drop. Thats not too greedy. Of course they are always looking to make money, thats business. Greed is Capcom getting rid of save deleting.

When I first heard about the price drop, I did not hear about the free games. I was a bit upset but in a sense was happy because this can increase the install base and hopefully make third parties want to make more games for it. Then I heard about the free games and was stoked. However, is this a business model we should be supporting? I'm planning on doing a blog post about this, but if we tell Nintendo that we are happy with major price drops soon after release as long as they give us free games, is that really a message we want to send them? Just food for thought.

Lol when I opened gamespot the first thing I saw was $169 and my jaw completely dropped in frustration. Then I saw all the games I'm getting for free and I actually feel like I got a decent deal. I'm sure some of the 20 games will be weaker titles but having Super Mario Bros., Zelda, Metroid Fusion, Yoshi's Island and whatever else available at anytime, anywhere is pretty cool.

@zenverak Nintendo is greedy. You don't seem to know Nintendo's history, do you? They weren't greedy before, any other company does that but not Nintendo. They used to care about consumers and they used too priced their consoles at lower prices than the competition and still get a profit. Nintendo's changed. Now it's just an arrogant and greedy company. Here's some history for you: In 1989, when the game boy was released the price was 99 bucks. The price for the gbc was also 99$, even the gba was at 99$. The original DS was much cheaper than the PSP: 150$ vs.250$. The GameCube was the only console to be 200$ at launch. The GameCube was the first console to hit 99$.

The 3DS was code named "Intellectual Property Recycler"... the magic is done similar to the DSLite, DSi, DSiXL... where you are forced onto a new hardware platform to enjoy the experience of re-buying all of your favorites again to play them on a new screen... It allows game makers to continually profit off of stale, and recycled content... so why not take a cut on the hardware when your making all of your money off of recycled material?

Hopefully they learn from this and don't short change the tech in the Wii U. Nintendo's strategy of doing new things with old tech can't last forever, they are going to have really invest heavily in a cutting platform at some point. What worked before is not going to work indefinitely. I think Sony nailed it this time the Vita will prove that gamers want advanced tech that works (the PSP didn't work with only one analog stick), not more bite size DS and iPhone games.

I think another cause of lackluster 3DS reception is the public's waning interest in 3D technology. The 3D tv market has been pretty poor and it appears as if there is also a decrease in the number of people going to the theaters to see a movie in 3D. Granted that the technology has made major strides, however, many people still complain about eye strain, headaches, dizziness, etc. from viewing 3D media.

2011 has been the year of free old games. I've gotten a nice amount between PS+, the PSN fiasco, and now 3DS. In the end it's really not free cause we paid for it in some way but it still feels good.

Nintendo is fair and awesome, and this news is proof of that. Nintendo wants to cut down prices so that more people can enjoy the 3DS. However, others have already payed for the 3DS at a higher price! Nintendo has adequately remedied these earlier customers by providing these entertaining titles - I loved Metroid Fusion, but I don't get to play it anymore due to losing the old cartridge. Great job, Nintendo. You make us proud.

Nintendo is Greedy? What company doesn't try to make money? However, if they were truly this greedy company, I doubt they would be giving us 20 VC games if we already bought the system. What did Sony people get if they bought the Playstation the day it came out?

I must admit I had no real intention of buying the 3DS for $250. It's one of those things I wanted, but I couldn't justify buying a handheld at the same price I bought the Wii.

This proves Nintendo is really an arrogant company just like Sony, and Nintendo is also really greed. Glad I didn't buy a 3DS, the free games doesn't help either. Most of us already played those games 25 years ago. Nintendo also said Wii U is going to be expensive so I'll wait until they cut the price by 600$. Yes, I'm probably wrong about that but seeing Nintendo know, it may happen.

Now I'm really considering buying one...granted, it's still a young system and it only has a few key games out, but it's worth a chance, especially knowing that Nintendo does deliver the goods eventually. Look at the Wii; in the beginning, it wasn't so amazing...now it's the best-selling system in the world. The 3DS suffers the same issue as the Wii (not many impressive third-party games), but if anything, we know that Nintendo will make up for it with their big-name games, like Ocarina of Time 3D. As for the price drop, it works well since they are anticipating the release of the Playstation Vita later this year. By doing this, Nintendo could get the 3DS more established in the market before the Vita hits store shelves, making it harder for Sony to close the gap right from the get-go.

You guys shouldn't be arguing over the handheld consoles. Just go get both because I would stake my life on the fact that the 3DS and PS Vita will be the last two dedicated gaming handheld devices ever mass produced. Unfortunately the spectacularly lame smart phone market is eating Nintendo and Sony's lunch. So unite, be happy you have these options now and be appreciative. Soon your handheld options will be Angry Birds PRIME or Angry Birds Party Mucha Libre Blast along with Infinity Blade 5.

Places like Wal-Mart still sell the DSLite, DSXL, and now the 3DS. I think people are getting confused here...especially the parents. The 3DS was overpriced; heck, I'd rather buy a 360 or PS3 with $250. Competition is overwhelming Nintendo, I'd say.
