Nintendo slashes 3DS prices

Handheld price drops to $169 in North America, by "around a third" in Europe; Nintendo to give 20 free GBA and NES Virtual Console games to early adopters.

In response to a financial statement that slashed the firm's full-year profit forecast and announced disappointing launch sales for the 3DS, Nintendo today announced it was cutting the price of its new handheld globally by up to 40 percent. These price cuts will come into effect on August 12, Nintendo said.

The 3DS price is being cut globally.
The 3DS price is being cut globally.

In Japan the price of the handheld is dropping 40 percent to ¥15,000; in the US it is dropping 32 percent to $169.00; and in Australia gamers will see the price drop 29 percent to AU$249.99. Gamers in Europe will hope to see similar reductions; Nintendo UK confirmed to GameSpot that the trade price of the console will be dropping by "around a third" but did not offer concrete information since exact pricing is set by retailers.

By way of compensation to those who have bought the handheld at the higher price, Nintendo also announced that it will be giving 20 free downloadable games for existing 3DS owners. While half of the games released as part of the so-called "Nintendo 3DS Ambassador" programme will be available on the Nintendo eShop at a later date, the company said, the other half will be exclusive to the early adopters.

Ten NES virtual console titles--including Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber, and The Legend of Zelda--will be released first to members of the programme and will appear on the Nintendo eShop at a later date. Programme members will also get 10 GBA virtual console games--including Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong--that Nintendo says it has no plans to release to the general public. Any 3DS owners who connect to the Nintendo eShop before midnight US Eastern time on August 11 will be automatically entered into the programme.

More details on the programme will be announced "in the future," Nintendo said.

Great news though. This guarantees I'll be buying one sometime in the future (when I can afford it, that is).

most common thing you read on boards is "I'll get it when X game comes out" they would have made a _killing_ if they had waited or prepared better for games on release, just a killing but there is _still_ nothing I am particularly interested in buying for my 3DS and that brings a bit of sick into the back of my mouth. Most played game on my 3DS is Puzzle Quest download for goodness sake!

Still waiting for Super Mario before I pick up my 3DS at the cool reduced price point of $169.00, which is much more reasonable.

Now that the price is going to drop...it seems worth $170. But the PSVITA is still worth $250 for what it can do ;).

Still, a 170 dollar handheld with few good games at the moment is still not worth it, not to mention that the games coming this holiday season are all remakes or just rehashes of the same old Nintendo games...still not worth it to me

@Cartr1dgeBased It's 20 games, not 2-3. And for those of us that work 80 bucks is nothing. I make 80 bucks in 15 minutes of work. (Yes, I am an older gamer).

20 free games at 5 bucks a pop is like 100 bucks worth of free software, which is worth it to me. Clearly, Nintendo was testing out the market when they decided to sell the 3DS for 250 bucks. If sales were strong, they knew they would be making a killing. If sales sucks they can easily get a huge price drop to kickstart sales and offer "free" games to early adopters, which really cost them very little as they're essentially old ROMS. Anyway, customers are happy and I can see 3DS sales picking up, especially if they release better 3D games like OoT

I would have preferred it if the early adopters could choose which 20 games we wanted, like just give us a $100 credit on the eShop. The NES games won't interest me too much, and I already have plenty of GBA games, but meanwhile plenty of the GB and DSiWare games are on my wishlist.

Good move by Nintendo. The 3DS sales were not what Nintendo expected. So a price drop is a good way to improve sales. $169.99 is better than $250.00 so Nintendo just has to get the games happening. Nintendo was very proactive in addressing the 3DS "issue" I wonder if Saints Row, Megaman, Assassins Creed games for the 3DS will somehow be "uncancelled" and the other 2 3DS games "Undelayed" Nintendo seems to be trying to address any concerns that the 3rd party publishers may have had about slow 3DS sales.

If Nintendo thinks that lowering the price of the 3DS will win the war against the Vita is greatly mistaken. The 3DS has too many flaws most notably software. The 3DS will go down in history the third biggest flop for Nintendo behind Virtual Boy and the original Game Boy Advance.

Yeah Nintendo had to do this. Supposedly the 3DS only cost $110 to make and the PSV was also going to be $250. Good move.

excellent news for the consumer. I think nintendo have identified where the current consumer limit is for the price they are willing to pay for a handheld console. A little north of £150. If they bring this down (from its current retail price of £169.99) to something in line with the japan/US price cuts, we'll be looking at ~£125. This will see units fly off the shelves. Now did someone say something about a majoras mask remake....

The DS was a tough act to follow and at the time of the 3Ds launch, the wii was what, a hundred dollars cheaper. Nevermind the fact that the launch lineup was so poor. Can't say I diddn't see this one.

its funny because even though nintendo won the last gen handheld race it wasnt because of games most ds games weren't as good as some psp games heck some games were on par with its big brother the ps2. but things like price, battery life, lack of games for the market they where in. the psp was always more geared towards the hard core market, while the ds more to the casual just like the wii. yes it moves units but most games where very kiddy to me cooking momma, nintendogs, pokemon even though they had some good classic hard core games those dont seem to sale well on nintendo china wars did horrible. we will see if enough hard core gamers pick up the vita to make it viable or will the 3ds win with lower prices and a different market strategy. in any event i have the ds and have made plans to get the vita. hopfully the vita will hae games for me to play this time.

The smart thing for sony to do right now, is to call Nintendos bluff. It would be nice if Sony was aggressive enough to decrease the price of the Vita to 199.99 for the Wifi only model, and still have a strong launch line up. That way it is a ~$40 jump from the 3DS to the Vita, and what you get for it would out way the money spent. Although, we are talking about the same company who had a $800 console and very few games for the first year and a half......

I think nintendo made this a win win for everyone. They will sell more 3DSs, people will be able to buy the 3DS at a lower price, and people who bought the 3ds already will get a ton of free games, some exclusive to them, and since the system will sell more, there will be more games made and that is good for everyone. BTW i bought a 3DS on launch day.

Well, the GBA games continue to play just fine on my DS Lite, so no motivation there. And the NES games, I already got the ones I wanted on the Wii, so no advantage there. At least the price is now semi-reasonable. BUT like most people have pointed out, I'm waiting for the inevitable remodel / colors / price drop edition before I even bother looking at the 3DS.

Typical of people to try to put down Nintendo and sing their vita praises even when Nintendo does something like this. :P I think that it is great that nintendo is not only listening to user feedback and lowering the price but still giving their early purchasers something too!

@Wula_ When you conshder the fact that some of those GBA games (Super Mario Advance 3, Metroid Fusion, and Mario Kart Super Circuit) sell at Gamestop, Amazon or Ebay for $15-20+, and the NES games as a bonus, that is a VERY good deal. Im happy with it. The Donkey Kong Country games for GBA, or Golden Sun 1 and 2 would be nice additions to that list. We can hope. : )
