It's been a week of sales statistics in Australia, with news coming this week of record-breaking game sales in 2008 and Microsoft touting half a million consoles sold down under. Nintendo has recently released its figures for Aussie sales, unveiling that the DS was the best-selling game device in the country in 2008.

This is the third consecutive year that the DS has taken out the top spot, selling more than 800,000 units alone in 2008, according to independent market-research company GfK Australia. The Wii is also holding a record of its own. Just 111 weeks since its Australian launch, the console has already sold one million units, making it the fastest-selling console to reach this mark. The previous record holder was the DS, which sold one million units in 152 weeks.

“We are really pleased that the Wii has hit the one million mark after 25 months; it's the fastest-selling games console yet,” Nintendo Australia's managing director Rose Lappin said in a statement.
