Nintendo surprised investors on Wednesday by revealing a net profit for the July-September quarter.

The corporation has made $132 million in profit for the six months ending in September, marking a significant upward swing from the $91 million loss it announced during the first three months of the period.

Analysts were far off the mark in their projections, with many expecting Nintendo would announce a multi-billion-yen loss for the quarter. The strong performance could be instrumental by April, with Nintendo hoping to bring an end to its four-year run of annual losses.

Responsible for the success in particular was the "extremely strong initial sales" of Super Smash Bros for 3DS, which has shipped 3.2 million units globally already since its mid-September release. In addition, the eccentric life sim Tomodachi Life has sold about 1.3 million units worldwide since its release.

Meanwhile, Wii U hardware sales have more than doubled in the past six months, though that's in comparison to the system's dismal performance during the same period last year.

During the six months to September, Nintendo has sold 1.1 million Wii U consoles worldwide. During the same period last year, it had only sold about 460,000 units.

In terms of software, Nintendo shipped 9.4 million Wii U games. The corporation did not specify further, only adding that Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors performed "steadily".

However, 3DS hardware sales are down significantly. During the April-September quarter, Nintendo sold about 2 million 3DS systems, compared to the 3.9 million units it sold during the same period last year. In terms of software, Nintendo sold about 233 million 3DS games during the six months, which again represents a decrease from the 273 million it sold during the same half-year period in 2013.

Wii hardware sales sunk further as Nintendo discontinues the console across many territories.

3DS sale is down be cause there is a new version just around the corner. Stupid that Nintendo keeps updating the stuff that should be there is the first place but anyway better late then never.

I have the regular 3DS + 3DS XL and will get the new 3DS XL, damn stupid name they put on their latest version. Will the next version be "new new 3DS XL" :D or "newer 3DS XL" haha

I love the WiiU free online and the biggest library of games any console will ever be able to offer, plus the best dlc in the industry and exclusives my number one console right here. and this christmas I will be buying 3 more for family its that good. plus Nintendo is going a lot of profit with the WiiU no need to worry about them going bankrupt buy with confidence.

Why do some people still sound as though it's only possible to own one (1) console? My intention was always to own a ps4 and wii u. I bought my wii u not for assassin's creed, street fighter, fifa, etc, that's what the ps4 is for along with their exclusives.

The reason I bought a wii u was always for the wii u exclusives. Nintendo always has great games coming out and monolith soft...i dont think there was ever a game from those people that I didn't love.

The reason I hope the wii u gets more support is for the people that can apparently only own one console a generation for whatever retarded reason they believe so that they may pick up a wii u.

It looks like 2015 will be equivalent to the 3ds's 2013. Pretty much a good (or great) game every month. To be truly equivalent to the 3ds that should have been in 2014 and Mario Kart 8 should have been in 2013. Compared to the 3ds the Wii U is a year behind schedule in terms of getting the games out.

I hope people do end up seeing it in the same light as they do the 3ds. A great console (with unremarkable specs) with a great library of games. Speed isn't as important as being a current, properly supported console.

I have an xbox360 and a Wii U and the defining difference is not power. The 360's has a huge library but is on the way out and the Wii U's got a younger and smaller (though solid) library and a future and is moving forward. Same with the ps4 and xbox one. They're specs are disappointing next to current pc's but they will get the support that will make them stay relevant 'till the end of life.

I think it's been clear since MK8's launch that, end of life, the Wii U will make a bit of money for Nintendo and not be a true failure. But not half what they were hoping for and a tiny speck compared to the Wii. They won't be happy. Still their books will be OK and they can afford to focus on making the Wii U a great console (Which it's slowly shaping up to be) before trying again with the Wii U's successor.

@Nev3rtime I agree with much of this. Though I think that the Wii U will end-up being pulled before the Xbox One and PS4, and that Nintendo will be less ambitious (or, at least, less off-the-wall) with their next device than they were with this one - for all of its positive points, the Wii U has a significant 'what-the-f*ck?!'-factor that, I think, requires one to be a believer going in.

The Wii U's okay. I don't want it to tank. But I think there are significant lessons for Nintendo to learn from it.

This is good news for gamers, the console wars are better with more systems on the market, keeps prices down and pushes innovation, oh and prevents companies like Microsoft telling gamers to bend over and take it.

If you like Video Games in a classic or very general sense - and therefore enjoy games across many different genres - It's kinda silly to not own a Wii-U.

The wii u is great, the only thing that i'm wondering is what's next after nintendo puts out their hit titles. Do we wait for sequels or do 3rd party developers mend their ways and finally give this console the support it deserves? the increased sales should do that.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Okay. This will be a reply of two parts - first, the mandatory Gamespot Forums pissing contest, and second, the stuff that we should actually be talking about…

… "breh" is a noise that a horse makes. Also, I think you have your units muddled-up there - unless you're suggesting that every Wii U and Xbox One has sold for a dollar-a-piece.

Okay, now that that bullsh*t is out of the way - there is no disputing that the Wii U is the least significant of the three machines of this generation, and the fact that it's sold only slightly more consoles in more than twice the time when compared with the Xbox One only supports that point. When you consider that Microsoft have been so disappointed by the sales of the Xbox One that they've been coy and obtuse about how many have "shipped" vs. actually sold etc., it's not a flattering comparator. And by the time Christmas has come and gone, I expect the Xbox One to have moved beyond the Wii U in terms of consoles sold, and to continue to pull-away all the more over the rest of this generation - from which, I predict, Nintendo will withdraw first.

There aren't enough headline-making games on the Wii U to make it worth owning in isolation. It's a fine and worthy 'second machine', but anybody who owns a Wii U, and only a Wii U, is bound to feel short-changed. Just about every third-party developer has dropped the Wii U like a hot-brick (those that even picked it up in the first place…), and there are only so many first-party titles, indie games and Virtual Console releases that one can play. In my opinion, a serious gamer (whatever that means these days…) needs another platform. For the moment an Xbox 360 or PS3 will do fine, but this time next year it won't. For this reason, among others, I believe that the Xbox One and PS4 will inevitably pull-away as people are forced to upgrade.

I am as certain as I can be that the Wii U will be remembered as a failure - fondly remembered, in some circles, but nonetheless as a failure. Even when it had the 'next-gen' market to itself for more than a year, people weren't interested in it - and since, while it's had a bump since Mario Kart 8 was released, broadly even less so. Except when a new Mario or Zelda game is coming out (Bayonetta 2 being the exception that proves the rule…), the Wii U often isn't even part of gaming conversation - other than the 'bad news' stories, like the latest CoD not coming to Wii U (like anyone even expected it to…).

Let me attempt to ameliorate your feelings towards me by saying the following:

1). The Wii U is the only current-gen console that I own. I do not have an axe to grind in favour of any other console (my primary machine is a gaming PC).

2). The Wii U has certain features that I enjoy - for instance, off-screen play is terrific for gaming in bed - and in no respect do I believe it be 'all bad'. I just think that, overall, it's a bust.

Other opinions are available...

I'm happy with my PS4, but I will say that if Microsoft and Sony relied as heavily on first party games as much as Nintendo, they would be in a lot of trouble.

That being said, recently, out of nowhere, I kinda wanna pick up a Wii U. Really enjoying my 3DS that I picked up a few weeks ago, and it kinda sparked my interest.

Also, lately, I'm kinda getting sick of all the drama and huge production of everything. I just want to play games and Nintendo has, without a doubt, been putting out some pretty solid titles lately and appears to have more coming in the future. They're also keeping pretty quiet, while still remaining confident. I'm kinda liking their approach of not trying SO hard to always be in the spotlight.

We'll see what the holiday brings.

Nintendo can keep the momentum going in 2015 with the new Zelda. A few more key titles after that should have them right in the thick of things.

So I can buy a PS3 (in terms of power) from nintendo which includes Mario kart and a Zelda game somewhere in the future, with a tablet controller.

Not tempted, as I am not tempted by a PS4 or X1 without decent games

It's head and shoulders above ps3 lol. 8 times as much RAM makes a big difference. But if you're not into platformers, that takes out half of the great games.

Well, a more powerful system and better marketing would have secured more third-party games attracting people away from Xbox One and PS4 to sell even better, but I suppose after almost two years, the Wii U finally picking up moment is a good thing. Let's just hope they stay in the positive this time.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That whole more powerful hardware argument is bull, Third parties are continuing to make games on Weaker Hardware then the Wii U (PS3 and 360). It's all about numbers, if the Wii U had about or more then sales than the PS4 by now I guarantee you we'd see more and more 3rd party games for the system. The gap from the Wii U too the PS4/XBOX ONE are not as big as between the Wii and PS3/360. The Wii U lacks power not hardware functionality as the Wii U Graphics API has lots of DX 11 equivalent functionality where as the Wii Didn't have any sort modern Shader Model.

@JoSilver @JustPlainLucas I think that if the hardware had been less esoteric and easier to work with, the Wii U would have done much, much better. Unfamiliar architecture, coupled with strong-arming developers into using the Gamepad and enabling off-screen play, made the machine just too much of a ball-ache to develop for - particularly, as has been said, because there are so few of them in the world.

It's kinda chicken-and-egg: the Wii U is a b*stard to program for, which means that popular third-party titles won't come out for it, which means that people won't buy the Wii U, which means that it isn't worth the hassle of programming for it, etc.

Pity.

<< LINK REMOVED >> haha,,, a more powerful system...what a crock. You realize that the Xbone, PS4, and Wii U all run on derivatives of the same AMD APU technology....The PS4 being the most powerful based on GPU/CPU specs. Yet Nintendo, is doing 1080p at 60fps in more games than either competitor.
