Nintendo Responds to Zelda Netflix TV Show Rumors

"The article in question is not based on correct information," company president Satoru Iwata says.

Earlier this year, The Wall Street Journal--citing an anonymous source--reported that Nintendo was working on a live-action Legend of Zelda Internet TV show for Netflix. It turns out, however, that this may not be true.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has now told Time: “As of now, I have nothing new to share with you in regard to the use of our IPs for any TV shows or films, but I can at least confirm that the article in question is not based on correct information."

You'll notice that Iwata's statement doesn't flat-out deny that such a production is in the works. GameSpot will continue to follow this story as it unfolds.

According to The WSJ's source, Netflix's Zelda TV show is aiming to be "Game of Thrones for a family audience."

Nintendo is known for being extremely protective of its franchises, only allowing a handful of TV/movie adaptations to date. Legend of Zelda was produced as an animated show, but it ran for only one season in 1989. And of course, the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie was a trainwreck.

More recently, leaked emails revealed that Sony and Nintendo were discussing a new Mario movie. Spider-Man producer Avi Arad is reportedly brokering a deal with Nintendo to obtain the Mario film rights. Contrary to earlier reports, Arad says negotiations with Nintendo are not finalized, but rather "just the beginning."

Nintendo's next core Zelda game, an open-world title for Wii U, will be released later this year.

Keep Nintendo away from Television series PLEASE AND THANK YOU.

Yes I know Pokemon has the Anime and Manga and all that jazz,

but Mario and Zelda don't belong on tv.

I'm pretty sure The Legend of Zelda animated series did stream on Netflix a couple of years ago.

"Game of Thrones for a family audience."

Oh God no!

It would be about a fantasy story about a teenager who saves a girl from from a bad guy. This is so original and has never been done before. Why didn't anyone think of this concept before?

Avatar image for the_black_smurf

If Netflix did it it would be a 13 part miniseries that the critics call 'sloooooow burn' and 'smoldering' - - basically 12 hrs of no dialog, plot, action or anything except depressed people staring into space.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I've... never seen a show do that on Netflix exclusives. In fact, Lillyhammer was hysterically funny and full of events.

I thought the article would be about the Zelda cartoon. Well excuuuuuse me, princess!

Am I the only person that thinks a live action Zelda show/movie should be a childhood fantasy story starring a boy/child (like Pan's Labyrinth, Peter Pan, Harry Potter, Lion/Witch/Wardrobe, etc.) instead of a young-adult adventure story starring an older Link? I know it's much more difficult to find a qualified actor for child roles, but Link's stories are more about being a small child thrust into a overwhelming quest in an enormous world. Small fish in a big pond is essential.

What if Link did say the "excuse me" line, except instead of sarcastically, he snuck it in earnestly and in a way you didn't notice he said it until a minute later?

<< LINK REMOVED >> That would be glorious.

Nintendo is good at keeping most of their stuff under wraps until theyre ready to discuss it fully. Sounds like he didnt flat out deny it at least.

Avi Arad? No no no! Keep that man away from ALL OF THE THINGS!

Protective of their franchises? Pokemon says "Hi!"

Avatar image for Stebsis

If they make this and it doesn't have the "excuuuse me, princess" line, it's immediately just crap.

I so hope so.... it will be a Hell of a show if it happen.

I don't see how a live action Zelda show would work. It would be unintentionally funny to me unless they drastically change his dress code. Like they did for Batman. They damn sure would have to get rid of Mr. Tingle. =P

Avatar image for mlpreble

<< LINK REMOVED >> It would star Tingle.

So since they didn't say no, when they would have if it wasn't true - the answer is yes.

Avatar image for trevorzyla

The original article didn't seem like they really had a solid idea of the TV show anyways, seemed more like some guy at Netflix was like "HEY WOULDN'T IT BE COOL IF WE MADE A ZELDA SHOW?" and people ran that as a story.

Oh thank goodness, live-action Zelda series man just damn. I couldn't believe It.

Avatar image for ello432

prolly just misinformation and confusion with the live action fan made Zelda trailer still could be a web series and in a manner of speaking netflix made shows are wed series or it's a different IP or Nintendo's new TV plan like the other 2 only with their own shows added in.

the Super Mario movie to this day has my favorite uncalled for product placement in that at the scene with the bob-omb its wearing Reebok shoes. but Sony please don't make another one and leave that cheesy movie to rot

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Was that supposed to be an example of a GOOD game?

Avatar image for ello432

<< LINK REMOVED >> yes its an exellent example of the care DeNA take with others IP's, fantastic music for one, a kool take of the snes graphics days, yes it only recaps all best battles from the final fantasy franchise and freemium is only used to speed the game up not to finish it and its not that slow. 4.7 out of 5 base on a just under 1000 reviews on android make that fact your opinion not the majorities.

instead of trying to be snarky why tell us why you didn't like the game

Please no. A live action adaptation would be on the level of terrifying abominations such as 80's cartoon Zelda and Philips-CDi Zelda.

Seal this evil and speak of this no more.
