Nintendo Reports Big Losses as Wii U Sales Stall

Pokemon Sun/Moon highlighted as key upcoming title that could "re-energize" 3DS business.

Nintendo has detailed its financial results for the three-month period spanning April 1 to June 30, 2016, reporting a big decline in sales compared to the same period in 2015.

Net sales were cited as $587 million, which represents a 31 percent decline in comparison to 2015, when it reported sales of $855 million.

Its operating income also showed a decline for the second year running in this period. It reported a $48 million loss in 2016; during the same period in 2015, the loss was $10 million.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo noted a decline in sales of both the 3DS and Wii U as one of the causes. Sales of its handheld were 940,000 units worldwide for the period, which is a seven percent decline over the previous year.

The Wii U, meanwhile, suffered a more considerable drop, with 220,000 units sold worldwide. This is a 53 percent decrease compared to 2015.

From a software perspective, Kirby: Planet Robobot was said to have showed "steady sales," and Fire Emblem Fates' European launch was deemed as getting "off to a good start."

Worldwide software sales for the Wii U remained flat, with 4.6 million units reported for the 2016 period, compared to 4.5 million in 2015. 3DS sales for the 2016 period, however, showed a small improvement, rising from 7.9 million units worldwide in 2015 to 8.4 million units in 2016.

Nintendo also brought up foreign exchange rates, which it said were "impacted by significant yen appreciation" and resulted in a $332 million loss.

Keep in mind Pokemon Go's launch came in July and thus would not be reflected in this report. However, Nintendo has said its impact likely will not be as big as some expect.

Looking ahead, Pokemon Sun/Moon, which launch in November, were highlighted as key titles. It also noted that it will release Mario Party Star Rush in the fall. Together, it believes these games can "re-energize" the 3DS business.

Of course, it also reiterated that its next gaming platform, NX, will be available in March 2017.

Additionally, Pokemon Go Plus, the watch-like companion for the mobile game, will now be available in September in the US, instead of its previously expected July release.

The Kyoto-headquartered company did not adjust its financial outlook for the fiscal year.

The Wii U needs a price drop badly! Drop it down to 199 and get rid of all the hardware that is still on the shelves... I'm sure gamers will buy it especially if the NX is not backwards compatible...maybe $199 with a game included

I for one am just waiting for the Wii U to hit $250 and I'm buying it. Enough first party games to make it worth it, especially since I haven't played a Nintendo game since the Gamecube and I'm craving some Mario. Combined with a couple third party games and the oldies digital storefront *cough*SuperMarioWorld*cough* I'm thinking its worth the cash. Will someone drop a sale already!

@Pawfalcon: Do you follow deal sites/forums? Because the WiiU was such a low seller there were all kinds of killer deals on the hardware and games many times, even as early as around 6 months after launch. Not official price drops but frequently retailers had huge discounts to get rid of stock. Of course those deals slowed as they got rid of that stock and presumably adjusted their ordering of future stock :), but there still some decent deals that pop up.

Always been a supporter of Nintendo I grew up with Nintendo and Nintendo is in my blood. But I'm very scare about Nintendo's newest consoles. I'm not expecting NX to have a Neo or Scorpio type of power but I'm at least expecting the NX to match the current PS4 or be more powerful than the Xbox One. If the NX can't at least match the PS4 then I'm just throwing the red flag at Nintendo. How can they expect people to buy their consoles when they still stuck and producing low tech consoles that can't compete or even produce a 1080P at 60FPS game. They have to show us something and it is very troubling that other than giving us a prototype name for their console they haven't say anything else about their newest console. which it leave you to believe that after hearing the announcement of the Neo and Scorpio they are scare of telling people that they have another console whish is not as powerful as the Neo and Scorpio and in top of that their newest console can't match the current most powerful consoles out there now the PS4 and their newest console is just a minor update in tech to the wii U.

@angrycreep: Nintendo expects to sell consoles based on their IP and brand which they think is still magic with casuals. They believe they can sort of "outsmart" casuals away from their phones and tablets, like if they simply flash some Mario at them in an app those casuals will run out and buy Nintendo consoles :).

I'm with the people that think they have lost the casuals to mobile and will not get them back, short of something totally wild (and unlikely) like a Nintendo branded tablet running Android :). The sad thing is they have also lost or are losing their supposedly diehard adult fans, at least to some extent.

And they're not even going to make another console? Worthless. Put your games on the real platforms (PS4/Xbone/PC) then Nintendo and stop with this nonsense.

Surprise? There's literally nothing noteworthy coming out for the Wii U this year (Color Splash looks mediocre) until Zelda. And that will probably be the Wii U's final hurrah too, which is a shame. The Wii U has great games.

As crazy as it sounds, I don't think that Nintendo wants to sell more Wii U machines. Then they would have to produce more. Wii U uses such outdated stuff. Its likely that it costs a lot to produce. This also explains the Wii U shortage in Japan. Plus its far too late for a redesign and sales don't justify redesign costs. I think they're in a tough spot until the NX launches.

@bunchanumbers: It is worse than outdated, the Wii U's CPU is custom, with how low the sales are I doubt they ever got over the initial start up cost for manufacturing it... Part of why Nintendo refuses to drop below $300 despite people calling it "over priced." The truth of the matter is that Sony/MS are likely paying less for superior hardware.

@ArabrockermanX: I believe Sony/MS takes a loss on their hardware to push their games. Nintendo will not sell their systems at a loss. Actually designing it in-house probably saves Nintendo money. It's just not as good of a product.

@bunchanumbers: interesting theory. i can totally see nintendo stopping production of wii u units within the next 12 months or so. with only 12m in the wild, they will be pretty hard to come by in 5-10 years time. if the nx is not backwards compatible with wii u titles, i am sure wii u's will hold their value among sellers... if nintendo plans to run wii u titles with the nx, the wii u will be long forgotten before we know it.

@bunchanumbers: Doubt it, from what i read a while ago, the manufacture process was getting cheaper and cheaper, also Nintendo was making a profit out of every Wii U sold...i do believe they don't want to over produce more consoles but they are fine with whatever number they can sold each month since is all about NX in a few months.

3ds and wii u offer terrible value at their current price points. the fact the 3ds costs more than a ps3 or vita or that the x1 is on par with a wii u is hilarious indeed. wii u has never gotten the price drop it so desperately needed. nintendo, by keeping it at 300 bones, you are not fooling anyone into thinking it is a premium product, high in demand. you are not apple. don't act like apple.

@Xristophoros: No bro, the 2ds/3ds-3ds XL/n3ds-n3ds XL are not more expensive than a PS3 or Vita. Agreed on the Wii U/Xbone part though. However the games are stupidly expensive especially the digital copies compared to the tons of sales that Playstation has for its platforms.

@sdinh225: 2ds is cheaper but that thing is junk. still not worth the cost as it retails for $130 here in canada.

i am referring to new 3ds xl which retails for $240 here in canada: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/nintendo-3ds-new-nintendo-3ds-xl-black-redsvaaa/10360864.aspx?path=4b8b1c092e369d449963d6ca374696c2en02

what an insane price point for ancient technology!

i can find a ps3 for less than $240 i can assure you of that. unfortunately, they do not sell them new at best buy anymore. i would have to go to an independent gaming shop. i have seen them for $175-$200 new in box.

@Xristophoros:

>Canada

Well then damn I lost the argument there, CAD went down in value around last year iirc because 2DS used is $60 here in the states, 20 bucks more if you want a new one that isn't riddled with peanut butter and baby powder. 3DS/XL hover around the $120 mark and n3DS XL is $199. I don't think you can find the regular sized n3DS without a bundle that goes for around $220 but regular should cost around 180 like the regular 3DS was before its price drop again.

As for a new PS3, I haven't seen any of those in brick n mortal retail stores that goes for less than $199.99 for a 12gb super slim console. Might as well fork over another 20 if you want a new super slim one with 500gb. Vita is normally $199 but lowest I've seen $160 at Gamestop. I'm guessing most logical gamers would hate to shop there but for Vita owners like me Gamestop normally offers physical Vita stuff that retail giants will never have and if there are basically no mom and pop gaming shops around.

@Xristophoros: Though I do agree with you I would say entering into the 3ds family is affordable if you just want to play games. A 2ds is $80 or $60 refurb from nintendo. It plays both DS and 3DS games as well so thats a huge library. But nintendo overall is pretty expensive considering their home console and that game prices, no matter how old they are, do not decrease.

@dcoutten: i would rather play my ds games on a dsi xl. no stretching or borders. that is the way to go. "new 3ds xl" costs $240 new in canada. you cannot buy the older skus any longer. 2ds is junk. i could never go back to such small screens.

Well the 3DS is what like 5ish years old? Of course the 3ds is going to reach its peak. The main reason it moved more units last year is with the release of the New 3ds. I dare to say with the 3ds, 2ds, and new 3ds that everyone who has an interest in it already bought one....or two.

Now the WiiU STILL being $300 is ridiculous, and has been ridiculous for years.

People in the know are waiting to see what the NX is and the casuals still don't realise the Wii U is a new machine
