Nintendo Offers Metroid, Mother 3 Fans a Glimmer of Hope

"[T]alk to me in a year and let's look back and see what's happened."

Nintendo's Switch presentation has come and gone with no sign from some of the dormant series that fans continue to clamor for--things like Metroid and Mother/Earthbound. Even Arby's is disappointed. And while there still hasn't been anything announced, that doesn't mean you should lose all hope.

Speaking with GameSpot in New York City today, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime knew where we going with one particular question before we could even finish asking. No doubt having heard the request many times over the years, when we mentioned that some franchises have languished in the shadows, Fils-Aime essentially asked the question of himself.

"Oh, so earlier today I got asked about Mother 3; maybe you can ask me about Metroid," he said jovially. "Look, again, I am proud as an executive with Nintendo to say that we look at all of the boards and all of the comments and we really have a good understanding of what our consumers want. And believe me, we take that to heart as we work to create content.

"So I have nothing to announce--here. But we are aware that there are some key IP that consumers just can't wait for the next true installment in that franchise's legacy. Suffice it to say, we're aware of it, and talk to me in a year and let's look back and see what's happened."

That's hardly confirmation that a western release of Mother 3 or a new Metroid will be announced this year, but it will have to be enough for fans for the time being.

There has already been criticism of what's viewed as a fairly thin launch lineup for Switch. Elsewhere in our interview, Fils-Aime noted that one lesson Nintendo learned from Wii U was the importance of when games are released.

No Caption Provided

He referenced that it's essential to have "a regular cadence of critical launches to drive the install base and keep the consumer base engaged." Nintendo thinks Wii U had a great lineup of games, but with Switch, it hopes to avoid having those "large gaps" between releases.

With much of Nintendo's presentation focused on games coming in the next year, it could just be waiting for the right time to announce a new Metroid, Mother, or entry in some other dormant franchise. At this point, only time will tell.

Nintendo is scum to even keep teasing. Either you make the game or you don't. Screw you, Reggie. You barely have any games as it is.

Gamespot ask Reggie about A Metroid game, why haven't they ask Reggie about the Specs? When will one of this dummies ask the lousy question? I know we're not gonna get any answer but still the question should be ask and it haven't been ask yet

Avatar image for redalert539

@angrycreep: Ofc they should ask them about an interesting new game rather than the horsepower. Because guess what? Gaming is just about that: games! Stop being such proccessing power-whores and frame-rate cultists and try enjoy true games for a change.

Avatar image for angrycreep

@redalert539: It seems to me like you have the same mentality as nintendo and that's why nintendo is in the situation where they are right now. And no gaming is not just about that, both things are equally important and the other two companies get it and they are giving it to us but Nintendo refuse to get the importance of the two things. Many game makers don't want to downgrade their games in order for them to be playable in a Nintendo console and that's one of the main reasons why 3rd party is almost nonexistent in Nintendo consoles.

@angrycreep: What you say could be true, IF that was the case with Sony and MS. But these 2 tend to lean more on the other side of the coin. Photorealistic graphics, high fps but in shallow, uninspiring games not to mention unfinished with day 1 dlcs, season passes, bug filled and..well, you get the point. I agree that the balance between gameplay and visuals would be the identical situation, but between those 2 i would always put gameplay first and foremost.

@angrycreep: you seriously can't guess the spec of this machine? How long have you been gaming.

Funny thing Sony/MS crush us with spec numbers here and there and yet still the experience most dev deliver is sup par..

It further proves that when Nintendo announce a "weak machine" that most dev still can't harness the power, proving that specs is really minor..

@angrycreep: Just FACE IT man, Nintendo is not Microsoft/Sony, nor will they ever be them. They do things there way, which is not entirely bad or good depending on who you ask. It would have been nice for the Switch to at least be as powerful as the Xbox One S, without 4k of course. Yet it is not so we gotta just accept that fact, and there is no reason for them to start throwing actual spec numbers around being they are not directly competing with MS or Sony.

Let's put it VERY VERY SIMPLE, Nintendo does Nintendo, and Microsoft and Sony do Microsoft and Sony.

Metroid in the first year, especially a Prime entry, will help the switch attract more core gamers.

I think launching with Zelda is a pretty big deal and is great, but yeah, the launch titles they have are very sparse and they need more than this.

I honestly feel like a holiday release with more titles wouldve been a smarter strategy. We'll see I guess.

Avatar image for angrycreep

@Richardthe3rd: A Metroid Prime will be a series disappointment for me, never been a fan of that type of series just give us a regular Metroid we haven't seen one since Metroid: Zero Mission back in 2004. Its been long enough just give us one of those. I did like the fan made Metroid 2 remake called am2r, to me this remake of the black and white Metroid 2 for Gameboy is the best Metroid game ever done and it wasn't even done by Nintendo. At least the they gave us the Metroid game that Nintendo has been denying to us for years.

@angrycreep: basically you don't want the next Metroid to be a First-Person Adventure. I can see with that

Avatar image for The-unDyIng
The-unDyIng

@slypher9: If they did another game akin to the Prime series i would think it would have MUCH better controls, I personally REALLY enjoyed the Prime Trilogy, but the first one was the best one still. It was not even from a game play point of view that prime 2 or 3 were not as good, it was more so story and lack of actually adding something game changing to them. The first Prime game was SO different that it was received fairly well and played really nice, but they kinda dropped the ball a bit with 2 and 3.

If they were to make a First Person View game like the Prime Trilogy it would have to be a lot more free roam, and have much more modern and flexible controls. I would also love to see them make a game that is a mix, the controls were not too bad in Other M, but it was not what i was looking for. They could make something with the heart and soul of Super Metroid, and pump the graphics up with a art style similar to Other M, of course without the really closed in environment that game had. Other M had some good ideas to it, so i think they can learn some things from that and apply some of them to an actual game that is more akin to Super Metroid.

I recall very strongly that that is exactly the lesson they learned from the Wii when the Wii U was about to launch.

Avatar image for The-unDyIng

@Dragon_Nexus: He is basically told what to say by the Higher Higher ups, who have no real clue what they are doing. Reggie has simply become a Glorified PR Master Debater. He definitely knows how to talk with confidence, but he can't just go saying what he wants. Maybe if he had his way more often things would be a bit different, but the difference between how North American Developers/Publishers think and how a lot of Japanese Developers/Publishers think is a big difference.

It simply seems like Nintendo of Japan is so disconnected from there fan base while saying that they know what we want. Meanwhile they do not give us what we want and only do what they want. It seems like some of them care and some don't, like a big power struggle or something. One side says lets make a more powerful console with better online services so we can attract more 3rd parties, while the other side says no it is about the game play not the power, then they meet in the middle.

Every time they say they know what we want, it ends up being too late, they are already 2 full generations behind at that point that they essentially screw themselves of potentially having a much better, more well received Gaming System.

"and we really have a good understanding of what our consumers want."

So why hasn't Mother been translated and localised? Why does Federation Force exist? Why haven't we had an F-Zero in over a decade? Why has Paper Mario gotten steadily less like the best game in the series, Thousand Year Door, with every iteration? Why hasn't Thousand Year Door recieved any kind of HD remake?

Nintendo has no idea what their customers want. Or if they do, someone somewhere is shutting them down when such things are attempted to be made.

@Dragon_Nexus: 100 Years would be a long time, so unless something terrible happens like all there big wig higher ups suddenly dying of a disease, then the majority of anyone alive now will never see the light of those days. I am sure there are other scenarios that can happen to cause a massive change in how Nintendo runs there business, but none of them are all that great short of canning all of there decision makers.

We all know that will not happen most likely though.

Avatar image for homelesshank

@Dragon_Nexus:Sega's main reason for getting out of the hardware business was from a mix of the American and Japan divisions not seeing eye to eye in regards to direction of the company along with shafting developers by putting out multiple add-on's to the Genesis that were expensive and not very popular and let's not forget them also shafting retailers in the US by releasing the Saturn 4 months earlier than they said they were to get the jump on Sony.

Avatar image for sagewaterdragon

@Dragon_Nexus: Sega collapsed on itself for a lot of different reasons, but that was definitely among them. I can hope that an actual businessman leading Nintendo instead of a passionate developer promoted via seniority will lead to some more cross-communication between branches. At the very least Nintendo now understands western marketing.

Avatar image for homelesshank

@sagewaterdragon: If it's a sign of anything Nintendo did do something similar to Sega back in October when Paper Mario was the last real game released for the Wii-U until March and then it'll probably be their last first party release for it, sort of like when the last game for the Saturn came out in November 98' and a whole 10 months passed with Sega dead in the water in the west until the Dreamcast was released in September 99'.

Avatar image for Jinzo_111887

@Dragon_Nexus: Indeed. If they did have an idea what consumers wanted, they wouldn't have decided to lock online multiplayer behind a paywall.

Avatar image for The-unDyIng
The-unDyIng

@Jinzo_111887: The Xbox and Playstation do just fine behind a subscription for there online services. The idea of having to pay up to around 60 dollars or so for a year of nonstop gaming is honestly not much of any money. I for one would prefer that if they actually put that money into creating a better and more stable network for there online components. Nintendo has to start taking there online services seriously, if they make us pay for those services and utilize the money wisely (hopefully), then they can actually learn how to make a proper gaming network.

The Average MMORPG (Subscription Game) costs 15 too 18 dollars a month depending where you live in North America, that quickly adds up to a lot more then paying yearly for something like PS Plus and Xbox Live. Considering most games on consoles are not MMO's you have to pay to play i do not see a problem with it.

Given Bethesda showed off Skyrim in the Switch's announcement trailers, but couldn't actually confirm the game was being released for the console despite, I think Nintendo might be a wee bit too anal about keeping projects a secret.
