Nintendo NX Is a Console/Mobile Hybrid, Has "Industry-Leading" Tech - Report

Plus, report claims software development kits are now being sent to third-party developers, possibly signalling a release in 2016.

[UPDATE] A Nintendo representative tells GameSpot, “As we previously announced, we will not comment further on NX until 2016."

The original story is below.

According to a new report today from The Wall Street Journal, Nintendo has started to send out software development kits for its upcoming gaming platform, NX. These kits are being sent to unspecified third-party developers so they can modify their existing games or create new ones to run on the upcoming platform.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo declined to comment, reiterating the company line that the Japanese game giant will talk in a more official capacity about NX in 2016. However, analyst David Gibson told WSJ that it looks likely that Nintendo will launch the NX in 2016 "because of the softness of 3DS and Wii U."

One prominent third-party game company that might already have a NX software development kit is Square Enix. During a broadcast in July, Square Enix announced Dragon Quest X and Dragon Quest XI for the NX. However, the company later tempered its comments by saying these projects were only "under consideration." It's possible Square Enix initially spoke too soon.

Exactly what form the NX will take remains unclear. WSJ's sources say the NX, which is still a working title, will come with a console and "at least one mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use." The NX will also reportedly use "industry-leading chips" in the devices that will presumably allow for better graphics and deeper functionality.

The marquee feature of Nintendo's latest console, the Wii U, is arguably its tablet-like controller. Among other things, it allows users to play full games on the device, though only if they stay relatively close to the main console. If the WSJ's report is accurate, it seems like Nintendo is taking this idea further with the NX.

The Wii U has underperformed, selling only 10 million units since its launch in November 2012.

Nintendo officially announced the NX in March 2015, alongside the news that the company was bringing its franchises to smartphones and tablets through a partnership with mobile gaming giant DeNA.

Earlier this year, a report claimed Nintendo could begin pilot assembly of the NX in October with mass production scheduled to kick off in May or June 2016. The NX, according to the report, would then be released commercially "around July." None of this has been confirmed as of yet.

Nintendo will hold its next earnings briefing on October 28 where it may have more information to share. Former president Satoru Iwata passed away in July, though new president Tatsumi Kimishima has vowed to keep Nintendo on the path that Iwata originally charted as it relates to the NX and mobile gaming.

What are you hoping to see from the NX? Let us know in the comments below.

For a resonnable price, I might buy this. I never buy mobile consoles but if you can do both, it could be nice. Especially since mobile games is clearly the strong point of Nintendo.

Sounds like their going more mobile gaming market, probably because that is Japan's biggest game market now. Will lose those who don't do mobile gaming and prefer an actual console though. Don't know how well that decision will work out in other sales markets like U.S., Canada, etc. whose largest game market isn't mobile.

Best scenario: they kick AMD/Intel to the curb and get Hitachi back on board, develop a neural interface and Super Scope 7, hires Sega to develop F-Zero-NX, and opens Iwata theme park.

I think what i sayed months befor is going to be true. Nintendo is building a mobile phone gaming unit that is possibly with something like apple tv to attach to tv. So nintendo saving a whole home console, goes with its own mobile phone into the mobile market without beeing attached to some big company. Thats why they startet partnership with that mobile company in japan. The mobile phone of nintendo had just to get a caller app, let eshop work and play its graphics with a little unit like apple tv play on big screen. Thats the transformation what they talked on e3 2015. Going to the future of game market with its own mobile phone that can be connected to tv with technology they used in wiiu in a smaller box.

If true, this is a great idea on Nintendo's part. The fact that being able to play Wii U games right on the controller was so limited is likely one of the things that likely hurt sales. Using current tech, naming the console something without "Wii" in it, and getting rid of the aforementioned limitation the Wii U has sounds like another potential huge hit for Nintendo.

Will this be nintendo rabbit? or swan song? I do hope Nintendo does something that bring back the developers and non gimmick controlers.

Still not fan of DQ sticking to Nintendo the series would be so much more popular if they released it on the consoles that actual HAVE bug customer base.

When they say "industry leading", it better be able to output 1080p easily or higher at a solid 60 fps. Otherwise Nintendo should really consider getting out of the home console market. Even as a mobile device it better outperform the latest iPads or whatnot at least in terms of fidelity.

@flexappeal: The Wii U can output 1080p at a fairly solid 60fps. It just doesn't do it with models with as many polys as on the XB1, PS4, or PC.

It will probably like MS surface book. When plugged together it will be more powerful and probably able play the games at 60fps and Full HD. When only playing with the mobile part the games will probably run at SD res and 30fps.

Well I hope Nintendo has been listening to its fans' complaints but more importantly paying attention to where the industry is going as a whole because if they don't get it right with the NX then Nintendo will be forced to become a 3rd party developer and exit the console market.

@bubba_1988: If it happens, I love they partner with Playstation to get their 1st party great games on PS4. I would LOVE that actually as I never buy nintendo consoles until they cost almost nothing, as I only want their 1st party titles!

I hope it is a mobile/console hybrid. That is the first thing I said when they announced they were working on a new console and I still think it's the best option. If they manage to release it for $400 they will be on point.

Good luck to them!

I want them to be successful, but personally i feel too old for Nintendo cartoony games...

If they make a console stronger than Ps4, able to support all 3Rd party mature games, blueray support, 1TB hdd, able to support 4k and 60fps, then yes i wil consider it. As i only buy one console every generation. I would also consider it, if it would support all the IOS games, also support basic tablet functions like browsing, utube, viber, etc and some sort of cromecast function, that would be an OK option for a second tablet,

The only think that i miss from Nintendo consoles, in my age, is the castlevania series.

I would pay good money to play a remastered version of them, on my TV with a proper gamepad!

So this is how it ends, not with a bang but with a whimper, a big ole mobile device whimper. When Nintendo started making deals with asian mobile game makers last year I was worried they were going to bring out a powerful tablet with ready made chinese android games. Looks to be about right.

I was really hoping they would do a Sega Dreamcast and bring out a innovative powerful console to lead the next generation of AAA gaming, but sadly it will most likely be fruit ninja knockoffs.

I'm guessing it will have a very small hardrive and it will be slightly more powerful than an Xbone, but not quite on par with ps4. Prove me wrong Nintendo, you slackers.

Nintendo should stop pursuing the console thing if all they gonna churn out is gimmicks and mediocre online functionality. Nintendo makes great software, They should focus on that. I see "NX" as the last attempt by Nintendo to penetrate the video game market, if they succeed, awesome, if they don't, say goodbye to future Nintendo consoles.

At age 12 I bought the NES in 1986. I loved it, I owned every console since. But I own an Xbox One as well. There are so many titles Nintendo doesnt have, i.e.: newest Batman, Madden - since 13, Battlefront, WWE, or any Sci fi shooter. Im in my 40's so Splatoon doesnt appeal to me. Where are the arcade fighters? No Street Fighter? Tekken Tag is good and so is Injustice: God's Among Us, but there is no party chat.

I own Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8, but they arent the same. I really hope that the NX is all about power and a party chat system. Here's hoping.

I may be in the minority here but I'm actually kind of dissapointed by this news. I may change my tune once more details are out but I feel like the Wii U just came out (yes, 4 years ago) and I just got mine last year. I'm not really looking forward to throwing it away to get a new console. I'm hoping the games will at least be backwards compatible but that's a pain and it's annoying to know that Nintendo isn't going to be supporting the Wii U for much longer. I'll enjoy the new Star Fox when it comes out and a few others but it's just aggravating that I'll have to buy ANOTHER new console if I want to enjoy any games past that

If Nintendo is just sending out their dev kit, there are 2 possibilities. Either Nintendo thinks launch games can be made in a year, or NX is coming in 2017. Let's hope it's the second.

The NX would be launching in a highly competitive market in 2016. The PS4 and XONE are already at $350. With milllions in userbase, games, and established brand recognition. And that's just the home console market. NX have to come out aggressive from the start. In terms of hardware capability, launch games, third party support, online gaming, marketing, AND price tag.

I'm a bit skeptical of them being able to do all that and still remain competitively priced with the PS4 and XONE. Besides, when was the last time Nintendo was aggressive at anything?

Absolutely needs more than just a Mario game at launch. 2, minimum, Nintendo core franchise games would sell it easily in the beginning. My vote: Zelda and Metroid. These two could easily show of the NX's potential, in graphics, controller innovation (if any), and overall power. I know Mario is their mascot, but I'd much rather have a new Zelda or Metroid at launch than a Mario title. I have a good feeling, if the NX releases in 2016, the new Zelda will be a cross-platform title with Wii U and NX. Not saying 3rd-party titles can't help with launch sales, but an amount of Nintendo's prime titles need to be there right in the beginning when a new console launches.

I think Nintendo is really getting ready to step their game up in a major way. Nintendo's hardware journey is usually win, fail, win, fail. Now...I think they're about to win and in a BIG way...well at least that's what my gut is telling me :)

After this system fails (it will fail.) I fully expect them to go 3rd party. I'm not saying I want it to fail either...but besides the nintendo faithful, gamers just have no confidence in nintendo as far as hardware goes. The fact that they just rehash the same games over and over doesn't exactly help bring in new fans, either. That's probably the thing I don't understand about nintendo the most...why do they just keep making rehash after rehash of 20+ year old series? Look at the Wii U sales...obviously most people really don't care about these games anymore...not enough to buy their system anyway. With a nintendo system you know what you are getting and you either want it or you don't. Pikmin is about the only new notable series they have had in the last 15 years...and that's just sad.

If it's a 2-in-1 it looks like it's going to be expensive. If it's the same $300 price, it's going to be underpowered, because some of the costs will be moved to the handheld module.
