Nintendo NX Details Coming Very Soon - Report

Not much longer to wait, apparently.

Nintendo has kept very quiet about its mysterious NX console, but it appears we won't have to wait much longer to learn more about the system. Analysts told The Wall Street Journal that they expect Nintendo to "release NX details" by early October, so it might be just a few more weeks until we know more.

The NX, or whatever it ends up being called, is scheduled to go on sale in March 2017. It's rumored to double as a home console that connects to a TV and a portable device for on-the-go gaming. More recent rumors claimed the system will use cartridges.

Recently, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime talked about how the company hopes to improve its fortunes with the NX compared to the struggling Wii U.

"One of the things that we have to do better when we launch the NX--we have to do a better job communicating the positioning for the product," he said. "We have to do a better job helping people to understand its uniqueness and what that means for the game playing experience."

In terms of games, Fils-Aime touched on the frequency it releases new games at. One of the issues with the Wii U was the lack of regular, noteworthy game releases, especially from Nintendo itself.

"We have to do a better job from a software planning standpoint to have that continuous beat of great new games that are motivating more and more people to pick up the hardware and more and more people to pick up the software," he explained.

Keep checking back with GameSpot for more on the NX. In other Nintendo news, the company announced that Mario is coming to smartphones through a game called Super Mario Run.

I was a huge fan of Nintendo in the generations from NES to Gamecube...then I got a Wii and was sorely disappointed. I skipped out on the WiiU and don't regret it based on what I read and people I talk to who own it. Here's to hoping Nintendo can get back to it's roots!

I really hope that this is a system where I can just download and buy all the zelda games from NES, SNES, N64, Wii, WiiU, and DS. That will make my day rather than having to buy a DS just to play the updated zelda games.

"We have to do a better job from a software planning standpoint to have that continuous beat of great new games that are motivating more and more people to pick up the hardware and more and more people to pick up the software" - I feel like they say this after every generation.

I can say "I need to go to the gym more often" every year again and again, but that doesn't get anything done. Nintendo, knowing what you're doing wrong isn't good enough. I want to see action. Great software, great ideas, disappointing results.

@scottman256: The very big problem at Nintendo is how the company is managed. It's a Japanese legacy thing, a very old way to manage a company where any one of the 'elder' decision makers has veto power over the direction the company could go.

Any of us over the age group of late 20s has that inner-child desperate for Nintendo to return to their true form. I miss that pure joy and fun factor that they could bring without compromising ANY quality standards whatsoever.

If you're referring to what caused the WiiU to fail Reggie, then no. The WiiU sucks is all.

@boodleout: No, he's referring to the fact that people scratched their heads and mostly thought the Wii U was a new controller for the Wii at its unveiling.

The last time I truly was amazed by Nintendo was during the N64 era.

Then came the Gamecube...I thought I would be overwhelmed by its magic, but turned out to be some kind of lame console for which Nintendo had absolutely no idea what direction to take. (Mario Sunshine...really???)

Then came the Wii...oh, how I was eager to get it. I did have some fun playing Mario Galaxy, but it did not take much to realize Nintendo was now making silly games for kids(yes, this is the demographic group they aim marketing-wise). It was either a bunch of silly low res shovelware, or a bunch of rehashes of old games but even more cartoonish and clearly for kids.

And then came the mighty U...

I can easily affirm I had more confidence in the Virtual Boy(back then) than I currently do with the NX.

Hardcore gamers will scoff at Nintendo? Please playing shooters doesn't make you a hardcore gamer. I've been playing since the 2600, I'm posting this while on the can, I'm hardcore. I've played through fallout on Ps4, my xboxone seems to be used solely for video streaming. I just ordered three games for Wii U, two of which I plan on playing. I'm a hardcore gamer, and can say the Wii U while not used much has had several good games worth playing. You want hardcore grab a nes ant try to beat TMNt or any number oaF other games.

"Hardcore gamers" will scoff at whatever Nintendo presents, so it's not even worth trying to pander to them. Now that Nintendo has bitten the bullet and is making phone games, they'll be moving further away from competition with Sony and Microsoft anyway.

@hotdiddykong: I love the 3DS.

I suppose the hate comes from ex/ upset fans which were loyal to the company, looking for a reason to come back, witness a poorer delivery of a console or games than expected.

I am one of those people. I believe Nintendo has taken their customers for granted in a number of circumstances.

@boodleout: Well, maybe the corporate bigwigs. Read up on how Nintendo is run through some Archaic Japanese Hierarchy and you will understand. There are still a ton of Nintendo teams who care about the fanbase and don't take them for granted.

Given that PS4 Pro dropped the ball with absolutely no exclusives, the NX has the advantage by default

Nintendo should just start publishing their games to other consoles. They will make much more money, and open themselves up to spend their resources on their games. I loved my WiiU, but I cannot spend money on another Nintendo console that doesn't pay off.

@kofab: I was thinking the same thing. Even if they made their stupid handheld gimmick mandatory but as a peripheral to use on xbone or ps4 we'd all get what we wanted.

@cynicalundead: Yup. They almost only produce one game a year worth getting anyway. It will do nothing to their brand, only make it stronger. Plus the catalogue of brilliant titles that they could re-release on the new systems will ensure them thousands of more fans.

Ok just get a controller that isn't ridiculous and lower the price of games once they've been out and it's all you need to do. If this has one more crappy gimmicky controller Nintendo is dead in the water.

It's going to be the most powerful gaming system of 2010, released in 2017.

@Ultramarinus: Even if a less than 2Tflop console, their best selling point is games plural, and what do they do, they don't even let us know if its a freaking console or not, and show us 1 game that works on Wii U but will work for NX, when freaking new tablets could run Wii U games, they literally riding everything on 1 game that isn't even being marketed as a NX game, cause Gamestop/Best Buy can't do pre-orders for Zelda on NX, cause there is no NX to pre-order for. I don't know, I'm not impressed at all with what Nintendo has done for NX, they did a great job to try and build Wii U up, but no just 1 game for Wii U for the second half of 2016 in Paper Mario, yet acting like NX reveal hurts Wii U sales, and it isn't like they cared anyway. Basically I'm highly interested because Zelda looks like a really good game, but man, people without PS4 gonna have a dozen reasons to get one this holiday, actual games unveiled, that can be under a tree Christmas Eve. If NX was Holiday 2017, but Zelda was Holiday 2016, I'd go buy a Wii U right now, but I can't not knowing Nintendo's plans, while Sony, I know their plans so I can go get a PS4.

Considering "One of the things that we have to do better when we launch the NX--we have to do a better job communicating the positioning for the product," pretty much means another gimmick, and too afraid to announce it cause they know even the most rudementry job by PlayStation will likely squash it, and now that Nintendo has huge buzz and Sony recuperating after its event, now is better time than ever to get the word going...But with PS4 getting so many PS4 only games, I'm afraid by time Nintendo even bothers to let me know what they will offer, I'll likely moved on to better things, like The Last Guardian.

Anyone ever noticed the codenames used for these consoles always sound better than the actual name xD e.g

Playstation neo, nintendo revolution etc.

@uchihasilver: Eh, PS4 Pro is an okay name IMO, though I'll agree that Revolution > Wii and Ultra 64 and Project Reality both > N64.

Gaming console... home console means something like a video player. Nintendo seems to stay away from dvd players. Strictly gaming... gonna be weird to go cartridge though.. old school tech lol get them lungs ready to blow in those cartridges again lol

@silkeejeezie: Hey, faster read times, no moving parts so there's nothing to break down, and now that capacity has caught up, cartridges are the obvious choice. There's actually no reason to use optical media anymore the way I see it.

Funny that title. More click bait. It's not even a rumour as Nintendo has gone on the record to say they will be unveiling NX around this time months ago.

For me it's the games over the system, so if there is any good stuff on it I'll buy it - no question!

I just hope they wont feed the NX with Wii U Ports over the whole first year...
