Nintendo not hosting press conference at E3 2013

Company to instead focus on hosting smaller events to showcase new titles.

Nintendo will not be doing a presentation at E3 2013, company president Satoru Iwata said during a financial results briefing today.

Nintendo's skipping out on doing a press conference at E3 this year.
Nintendo's skipping out on doing a press conference at E3 this year.

The company plans on hosting smaller events to showcase its new titles and updates instead of doing a large-scale presentation. For this year's E3, the company will be holding a closed event for American distributors and another closed hands-on event for the Western gaming media. Iwata will not be speaking at either event.

Iwata mentioned that the company was finding new ways to give information about its games directly to the home audience around the period of E3 2013. "During the E3 period, we will utilize our direct communication tools, such as Nintendo Direct, to deliver information to our Japanese audience … and we will take the same approach outside Japan for the overseas fans as well," he said.

The company will be showcasing upcoming Wii U titles slated for this year during this year's E3; it will not be announcing new hardware. For more information on Nintendo's plans on making the Wii U profitable, check out GameSpot's coverage.

Wow, not having a conference? That's insane. They must know it would go over so poorly that the public and media would turn against it further. As in, they don't have much exciting news to share, letting M$ and Sony have most of the publicity.

Never thought I'd see the day..

I think the WiiU should be Nintendo's last home console, they aren't making the money they thought they would and if they went with the PS4 or 720 2 years down the road, they could focus solely on the 3ds and game development and not worry about taking a loss or not being able to afford to make a console as powerful as Sony or Microsoft in the same price range.

Also, not everyone has $1000-$1500 to spend on 3 consoles, and Nintendo usually loses that fight due to poor 3rd party support and poor ports. And why pay for a third console when that same $300-500 could be used on games? I love Nintendo, but less and less people are staying with them and things are not looking good.

By canceling their press conference, Nintendo is willingly taking a back seat to Sony and Microsoft, which might make the publisher look as though it's losing stamina.

To be honest, though, Nintendo is losing stamina. They don't have any gigantic plans for 2013. If they did, they'd hold a press conference. I'm sure that we'll see some extraordinarily good Nintendo games crawl out of their development studios within the next 12 months. But it’s starting to look like 2013 is going to be a difficult year for Nintendo.

Funny, the same people who said "wait for E3" are saying "E3 doesn't even matter, it's all about the Nintendo Direct"

You notice that he mentioned the Japanese audience first instead of saying they would deliver information to everyone? Maybe I'm reading too much into that, but the fact that Iwata will be heading up Nintendo of America - from Japan - and still has a Japan-centric mentality may signal increasing pessimism about overseas markets.

Anyway, skipping E3 at a time when Sony and Microsoft are about to bring out the big guns is one of the worst marketing moves Nintendo can make, assuming there's any other move for them TO make. It suggests that the first party titles they are developing are not yet at a state of completion that can be showcased to the public. That means more than likely that those games will not be ready before the PS4 and X-Box 3 launch. This is abysmal timing, and gives undecided gamers that much more incentive to skip Nintendo this generation.

I'll say it again: Nintendo screwed up by unveiling the Wii-U too soon. If it were still under wraps they could at least give us the illusion that they had a strong hand. Now everyone knows their hand is weak.

It sounds like Nintendo has decided to focus solely on the Japanese market.

Things went "pear-shaped" for these guys 10 years ago with the Game Cube, which despite its excellence was one of the worst selling consoles of all time.

Every generation of consoles a Giant has fallen: Atari, Sega, Konami etc etc.

I suspect it's nintendo's turn.

At least they are "Showcasing" some games, but wow, I think this is a bad move. As a Wii U owner I was looking forward to Nintendo standing up to what the PS4 and Microsoft are bringing to the table. I'm looking forward to both Sony and Microsoft's presentations; hopefully Nintendo will "Showcase" the usual suspects, Zelda, SSB, Mario Kart, and perhaps a few surprises. Oh wait, I think that's what presentations are for...

Just make yourself a software developer already and continue to make mediocre titles. It`s clear you can`t innovate anymore and we like our Xboxs.

@alrepairs Oh, you poor simpleton.

Apparently Nintendo and Sony like Xboxs too since they both mimic just about all MSs innovations.

I don`t think I can be classified as a redneck being from Toronto Canada.

@shadowhunter0 @hateyourface @Sevenizz @alrepairs Ah yes, you are correct about that, however Nintendo has been toying with the idea of motion controls ever since the Powerglove on the original NES. But yes, Sony was the first to use a camera. Either way, Microsoft was not.

@Sevenizz @alrepairs You mean the innovations that they stole from the Sega Dreamcast, like being the first console to offer online capabilities right out of the box? Or the way they ripped off the layout of the Dreamcast controller (emphasis on the analog stick over the D-pad and triggers).

Wait, you don't mean Microsoft's "innovation" of CHARGING people to connect to the internet through their box, do you? Because Nintendo and Sony didn't really "copy" that much did they? Ah, you must be referring to Microsoft's innovation of motion based controls with the Kinect. Of course, that isn't really an innovation either, seeing as Nintendo came up with that first.

Anyway, I can see why you love your xboxs so much.

What is going on with this company? Are they attempting to run it into the ground for some specific reason I'm not aware of?

They have taken their time-to-market advantage with their new underpowered, outdated, barely different console and hurled it into the garbage, then lit the garbage on fire. Now they seem uninterested in selling anything.

This might be a risky venture. On one hand, only having a limited showing at this E3 may be a smart business move considering there will be two new consoles taking up most of the hype On the other hand, not showing up strong (especially when you have been doing so for years and ESPECIALLY at a time where your credibility is being question more than ever before) at this thing will make people think you're not worth their time or money...

@Double_Wide That would be a valid argument if the only way to watch Nintendo Direct was on a WiiU. But when all the gaming sites post new episodes too, they can reach a huge amount of gamers without the bloated expense of those big press conferences (the only Nintendo console I own is a Gamecube I got for free, and I still watch Nintendo Direct). I'll be surprised if Sony and Microsoft don't follow suit in the coming months.

@Diddyaa How is it misleading? Nintendo isn't hosting a big press conference like they have done in the past, along with MS/Sony.

That's what the title says, and it's what the article is about.

I don't see how it's "misleading" in any way, shape, or form.

@Stiler @Diddyaa People think that since Nintendo isn't having a press conference they aren't showing up at E3.

But they will have two events during the time their normal press conference is and they are still going to be at E3 they will have games on the show floor. They also are going to show multiple Nintendo Directs before those two events.

So the frequent announcements through Nintendo Direct came at a price. Nintendo probably doesn't have much left in store for E3, so they might as well just cancel their presentation.

The reason Nintendo is not doing a presentation at E3 is because it has nothing to show compare to Sony and Microsoft.
