Nintendo NES Mini Can't Connect to Internet, Won't Get More Games

System is a "standalone device" and it has no external storage, Nintendo confirms.

Earlier this week, Nintendo unexpectedly announced that its famous NES console is coming back with a mini version due out in November. It comes with 30 games, including some great ones like Super Mario Bros. 1-3, The Legend of Zelda, and Donkey Kong.

Now, Nintendo has confirmed some further details about the device, including that it cannot connect to the Internet and won't get more games.

Speaking to Kotaku, a Nintendo representative confirmed the miniature NES cannot connect to the internet because it is a "standalone device." It also doesn't have any external storage.

Nintendo also shot down the possibility of more games being added to the library over time. The 30 games included with the bundle are the only ones players can expect. Nintendo also talked about why it chose the games it did and said users should be able to find multiple games that appeal to them.

"The game lineup was chosen to provide a diverse mix of popular and recognizable NES games that appeal to a wide variety of players," Nintendo said. "Everyone should be able to find multiple games to enjoy."

You might also wonder if the mini-NES is just the first mini console Nintendo plans to come out with. Could there be a mini-SNES or mini-N64 in the future, Kotaku asked.

"We have nothing to announce at this time," Nintendo said.

Finally, Nintendo confirmed that the mini-NES' chamber lid does not open and it cannot play old NES cartridges.

The NES Classic Edition launches on November 11, priced at $60. Additional controllers are available for $10.

NES Classic Edition Games:

  • Balloon Fight
  • Bubble Bobble

Bummer that they chose not to add the ability to get more games. But I'm pretty sure some geek out their is going to figure out a way to mod it so it can be done anyway.

@hotpockets0001: I owned a NES and my best friend had the Master System. He then got the Genesis, and I got the SNES. Such sweet memories. We could play both systems!!!

I really think they dropped the ball on this. It's cute, it comes with a good selection of games, but the thing would be infinitely more valuable if it played carts as well. Then it wouldn't "need" internet. I would absolutely buy one with that functionality.

@xantufrog: with the algorithm and the hardware, it will probably be cracked either physically or virtually, meaning it could probably accept ROMS, or it could be used to ''emulate roms'' on other machines.

@xolivierx: yes, this is probably true, but that's like saying "the game is awesome... if you heavily mod it". Plus we aren't going to promote that as a solution on here (see posting guidelines)

I never expected this thing to be able to connect online, but I'm still disappointed by it lacking my almost all of my top favorite NES games...

A lot of people are dismissing this instantly saying "I can play all these games on an emulator plus more" which is missing the point. Most people do not fool with emulators, People still love couch gaming. The ability to plug it up anywhere and play with the original NES controller made by Nintendo is great. A lot of people like to have something produced by Nintendo themselves. There are a few games I can personally think of that would have been cool to add but I also get a potential reason to not add them. These 30 are arguably the most popular games on the system and if they had 100 games, it would be too much filler imo. This will sell like hot cakes. Think of all the parents buying this for their kids and even themselves. It's just a really neat thing Nintendo has come up with. SNES will hopefully be next. My biggest gripe is it should have included two controllers. And I hope the cord lengths are long.

Terrible cash grab considering you can already play these games for free with an emulator, lol.

@dlCHIEF58: Not really, it's virtually impossible to support the developers of a lot of these NES games that are worth virtually nothing in 2016. I guess it's also illegal for someone to lend me their NES with games using your logic, lol.

@Prats1993: Unless you own the actual physical ROMs it is. You are allowed to have backups according to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act but to have a backup you need the originals to legally justify it, if you don't then they are pirated copies thus illegal.

No it is not illegal to share cartridges and nowhere fits into my "logic" which is just stating the law as it exists. It is illegal to share ROM images however.

The emulator itself is not illegal, having pirated copies of the ROMs is.

Cool, but clearly a rub at the nostalgias, to make a very transparent cash grab ...I'll pass as I have no desire for this. Cool idea though, kudos to those excited.

@ethanm1834: They are charging $2 per game if you assume the physical console and controller cost $0 to manufacture. I don't think anyone's gonna get rich off of this release.

@o311rocks: Yes, Nintendo will. They don't have to worry about game prices, they've long since made their money from them and it's just digital copies. I hate their insane prices on their online store, charging way too much for their back library when it's all just gravy for them now.

They are losing a tremendous opportunity to make this a huge success by not letting add more games. What do these guys have in mind?

@ricardo-sene: Probably to keep it at a low price of $60 for 30 games/console/controller. You no like? You no buy.

My only complaint is that it doesn't have battle city and snow bros; those are the games that I used to play with my parents and it would be awesome to have another round with them.

@Chernnunos: Do you own the physical carts for those ROMs you have? Otherwise it's illegal. Not saying it's that big of a deal but calling out a company for "cash grabbing" while actively admitting to pirating their games is kinda sad lol.

@Chernnunos: Lol I didn't accuse you of anything you didn't already admit to, but since you're gonna be a dbag about it i'm going to explain again. It's wrong to pirate games. Do you own all of the carts for the games you have ROMs for? You know it's illegal to have those ROMs if you don't own the carts right? You give a company shit for selling their intellectual property while you are (or aren't) pirating said games. That's the real sad thing. Maybe you should delete those ROMs (or post pictures of all your carts) and buy this console to help support Nintendo so they can release more games for you to pirate or not pirate in the future.

This is awesome; along with the prospect of a mini-snes and n64 in the future. However, when I think about it, how incredible would it have been if they released a mini-console that housed a bunch of nes, snes and n64 games all in one console. Along with being able to use some of the old peripherals on it too. I would honestly pay up to probably £200 for something like that. In the end it's wishfull thinking.

@themacaster96: The console could be called Nintendo VC (virtual console) and have the capability to house the entire backlog up through Gamecube. I'd be all over that.

@solidsolo: Exactly! That would be incredible. It makes me wonder why they don't just look at what Hyperkin do with their consoles and follow there example. Imagine Nintendo making a console capable of playing and bundled with games from the nes, snes, n64, gb, gbc and the gba; along with being able to use all the peripherals on it too. TAKE MY MONEY!!!

P.S. the more I think about this, the more it just makes me angry they didn't do it.

So you're telling me that I can do proper couch multiplayer with some of the NES's best and most memorable games for under $80 even after taxes and all? Hell yeah Nintendo! I may just become a fan again. You only failed me with ONE thing. My favorite game on the NES is not included. Duck Hunt. And you must have the gun controller.
