Nintendo NES Mini Can't Connect to Internet, Won't Get More Games

System is a "standalone device" and it has no external storage, Nintendo confirms.

Earlier this week, Nintendo unexpectedly announced that its famous NES console is coming back with a mini version due out in November. It comes with 30 games, including some great ones like Super Mario Bros. 1-3, The Legend of Zelda, and Donkey Kong.

Now, Nintendo has confirmed some further details about the device, including that it cannot connect to the Internet and won't get more games.

No Caption Provided

Speaking to Kotaku, a Nintendo representative confirmed the miniature NES cannot connect to the internet because it is a "standalone device." It also doesn't have any external storage.

Nintendo also shot down the possibility of more games being added to the library over time. The 30 games included with the bundle are the only ones players can expect. Nintendo also talked about why it chose the games it did and said users should be able to find multiple games that appeal to them.

"The game lineup was chosen to provide a diverse mix of popular and recognizable NES games that appeal to a wide variety of players," Nintendo said. "Everyone should be able to find multiple games to enjoy."

You might also wonder if the mini-NES is just the first mini console Nintendo plans to come out with. Could there be a mini-SNES or mini-N64 in the future, Kotaku asked.

"We have nothing to announce at this time," Nintendo said.

Finally, Nintendo confirmed that the mini-NES' chamber lid does not open and it cannot play old NES cartridges.

The NES Classic Edition launches on November 11, priced at $60. Additional controllers are available for $10.

NES Classic Edition Games:

  • Balloon Fight
  • Bubble Bobble
  • Castlevania

NES Mini should have had a HDD, internet connection for the eShop and wireless controller ...I think Nintendo could achieve more with this platform

This is a great idea. Super Mario, Super Mario 3, Mega Man 2, and Legend of Zelda. Great classics.

Castlevania 3 is the best of the 3 NES games and for whatever reason they put in there Castlevania 2 instead of 3

I guess this is Nintendo's way of celebrating the NES 30th anniversary, at least you get 30 games with it.

While it won't get more games, is anyone else pretty darn content with whats there? This is like, the Rare Replay of the NES. A few jems I haven't played in 20 years, and the expecected Mario, Zelda etc. are here. Looking up about any Top NES games list, most of those titles are in this package. If this "console" was $100 or more I would expect more from it, but it's essentially a first-party physical copy of a compilation that represent the very best of the NES library.

Like a lot of people already said/predicted, this thing is not for "us", it's for random clueless (not in a negative way) people who will see it at a store and think "sweet I can play some NES games again".

My only wish is that it had TMNT2: The Arcade Game and Tecmo Super Bowl. Other than that it's perfect.

Well, it's useless then. Get a Raspberry Pi 3, and you can have the complete library for several systems... for the same price.

That's still a good deal. Some of the best games ever made are in there. One lacking game not on the list would be Dragon Warrior.

Well, that sucks. But still, this thing is awesome. I'm going to use the living hell out of it. Hopefully they'll decide to release NES Classic Edition Part 2, and include Bionic Commando. Then onward to the SNES edition!

@reduc_ab_: fair enough... but are you okay with having to purchase a new mini nes each time nintendo feels like releasing new games? pretty soon you will have 3 mini nes consoles under your tv... not only is it a waste of space, but it is a waste of resources and a horrible business model. had nintendo put in a cheap wifi receiver, ethernet port or even an sd card slot, they could make it future proof and add to the library (at say $5/game). yes, the price of the hardware would be $80 instead of $60, but would that really matter to most people? nintendo just wants you to waste more money instead of being practical and consumer friendly with this product. it is a baffling decision to say the least.

@Xristophoros: They're so small, I'd just toss em in a drawer until I wanted to play. At $60 a pop for a good list of games I don't really have a problem with it. In fact I love it. I'd buy five of these things if I could get 100+ classic NES games. But yeah, an internet connection would be better, but at the same time the NES is obviously retro so they're keeping it retro, I guess.

That's disappointing to hear, but I somehow expected it. I don't think Nintendo would be able to support another system, especially with the Wii U and the NX coming in...still, it has a pretty good lineup that could make some people consider it.

Lame. The people I know who would have bought this would have done so to play certain games not on that list (Adventure Island, mostly). I mean, come on! I understand why they can't include internet hardware but why not a tiny 1gig flash drive and the ability to transfer games via a USB cable? NES games are measured in KB's for crying out loud. You could probably fit every single NES game ever made onto a CD.

I just don't understand.

If they just gave it access to the eShop's other NES VC games (and perhaps new "NES Nindies") on top of the 30 games, the thing could be a viable retro console. I get the feeling that if this thing sells well, there will be a better version out in a year, so I may wait for that one instead.

@xantufrog: A win would be if they made an SNES Mini after the NES Mini was a huge hit, instead of an improved NES Mini after this first one only turned out to be a fad. A 30 game anthology in the form of a box has high potential to have a short lifespan in interest.

Who cares. It was pretty obvious. it's a Nintendo product after all. It's just too bad it took them over 15 years to release a product of this kind. I'm just wondering if the graphics will be as good as with the Retron 5 through HDMI or even like the Raspberry Pi arcade.

There's a few games that interest me; Castlevania, Metroid, Super Mario Bros, Zelda and especially Link. There's a few more that I might enjoy. However, I'd rather have them make a Wii U disk with these 30 games than make a mini-system. Also, based on "other" retro systems, I know the old graphics look even worse on the new HD TVs than they did on the cathode ray TVs back in the day. I don't think they need to redo those games completely, but they should offer slightly polished versions that look/fit a bit better on modern TVs.

Alternatively, I find that many retro games look/play alot better on the "small" screen. If they really didn't want to tinker with any graphics a DS version would likely be the best way to experience these old games.

It's a solid line up for sure. I think the only games not on the list that would have made it an instant buy (for me) is the exclusion of

Kung Fu, Paperboy, Duck Hunt, Dig Dug, Castlevania III and Tetris

Still, a pretty sweet list.

@chiefwiggum16: even better. They could have released an hdmi machine with reliable wireless controllers(with the option of having corded controllers) for which you can actually download games ranging from Nes Snes Gamecube and Nintendo 64. No emulation, just the real deal with downloaded files.

I'm not talking about their actual crappy ''virtual console''. Their online library is a joke.

They would have made a lot of money. But hey, Zelda(which was announced in 2014) will be released in 2017, maybe!

I can't believe how many people are complaining about this neat little console! Its costs $60 people! The cost of a single game for modern consoles, and some of you want it to play heritage cartridge's, have Bluetooth, an SD slot, WiFi etc. Then it would cost $150 and you would be whining again. That console is available in a couple different forms (Retron 5 etc) already, why crowd the market? This is unique, and offers great value for 30 top drawer games. Not only that, the controllers are also usable on 2 different Nintendo consoles. You say emulation is cheaper? Yes it is, and good on you! In all honesty, you were never going to buy a console anything like this anyway. I will be buying one, maybe even a second for the cabin, and a third to give away! That's what you get for $60.

@grain1: as far as my cartridge point goes, you can get a Genesis reboot with EIGHTY games AND it plays cartridges AND it has two wireless controllers. For $40.

Now, the Genesis reboot appears to be a bit chintzy... one hopes (but we don't actually know at this point) that the NES here is ruggedly built. And that would count for a lot.

But there has got to be a middle ground... I will bet you they would be able to add the cartridge reader to this, without touching the price, and still have a decent profit margin. Somehow a 3rd party was able to do this for Sega with - presumably - a profit margin built in. You are telling me a 1st party (Nintendo) can't do the same?

@grain1: I wasn't, but I know two people who would have, but now they won't because the games they want aren't on that list. You know what's even cheaper? A 1gig flash drive and a USB cable, the former of which is often given away at parties.

@grain1: I totally agree. The thing is, most machine like the Retron, are garbage. They all come with defective parts and faulty systems. I bought my Retron 5 knowing that. Out of the box, it does not recognize the controller, and it's an uber joke to update the firmware for it's a ludicrous time consuming procedure. But yeah, 60$ for a Nes console with 30 games, nobody should be allowed to complain. People have been begging Nintendo for years just to have them release something like this

Pretty much everybody was expecting an ok system with no great features and only a handful of games.
It's the way they have been operating ever since they released the Cube
