Nintendo has appointed a new vice president of sales, and his name is Doug Bowser.

According to Nintendo, Bowser "brings decades of experience, not fire breath, to the role," which involves overseeing "a variety of sales-related functions, including in-store merchandising, retail strategy, and retail marketing."

Bowser will also play a key role in "driving national sales strategies to generate demand and achieve revenue objectives across all of Nintendo's product lines."

"Doug Bowser is an outstanding addition to our Nintendo team, as he brings a deep blend of both consumer package goods and video game sales experience," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive VP of sales and marketing.

"I know he will work tirelessly with our internal and external partners to ensure the broad Nintendo product lineup of hardware, software, and accessories are strongly represented throughout U.S. retail points of distribution."

Prior to joining Nintendo, Bowser worked at EA as VP of global business planning, and at Procter & Gamble before that.

Nintendo has also confirmed Bowser is not related to King Koopa.

Nintendo recently announced a return to an annual profit for the first time in four years, revealing the company made a ¥41 billion ($350 million) profit for the fiscal year ending March 31.

In March, the company formally announced work on its next console, codenamed NX, had begun. However, it did not provide any details on the project.

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said that the hardware project represents a "brand-new concept", but didn't elaborate further. The announcement came moments after Nintendo revealed plans to bring its household games and IP to mobiles and smartphones.

Problem is, Bowser is known to hire some of the worst employees ever. I've jumped on thousands of them, and they die so easily.

He worked at EA so he has years of evil under his belt which is a plus. As long as they don't hire Peach though things should be ok.

@WllDan7: Like they said, he "brings decades of experience, not fire breath, to the role", but perhaps that experience also includes being an evil boss, just like Bowser. Coming from EA, that's certainly plausible, heh.

@Barighm: Of course everyone at Nintendo noticed it...the point was, what are the odds in Nintendo hiring a guy called Bowser? We have two things here, the fact that he is good enough for Nintendo to notice him, and the fact that he is called Bowser.

I just hope the decision to hire him wasn't made by the same people who thought it was a good idea to have Marc Webb direct those Spider-Man movies.

I think Nintendo's days of making money from hardware are over. Only one of their last 4 consoles was really successful. The WiiU is basically dead, and the reason they're making a profit now is because of amibos. I hope Nintendo does well with mobile games, but that remains to be seen. I personally don't think they're gonna do that good because the mobile market is already flooded and has a dedicated fan base. I just don't see moms and wives ditching candy crush for Mario. Nintendo theme parks, amibos, and software are probably what's in Nintendo's future.

@centethomas: Nintendo will probably be the last company to ever leave the console business no matter how niche it may get. Their goal is to expand and bring people to their platforms. Even their mobile plans are not to take away from their premium products on their dedicated systems. We'll get amiibo's, theme parks, movies, TV shows, health care, all to bring in extra money for them to keep creating consoles and software. If they went software only, then they'd have to follow the trends of other companies like Konami, Capcom and Namco and focus more on big hits, and putting money above creation of games on dedicated platforms.

Their phone deal even says they're not going to follow the trends of other companies and how those other companies focus on whales. They're going to try to bring as many in as possible to play and have fun and find a way to keep people playing instead of moving on. That's their goal which is different from every other company in that market currently. What allows them to do this too, is the money they have which is largely gotten from selling dedicated hardware. When Sega left the hardware business we got less creative games big and small, just like every other company that entered hardware and left. Nintendo would really be no different in that situation.

@metallinatus@centethomas: Actually, despite it being surpassed by the PS3 and the Wii (more so by the Wii than PS3) last generation, the Xbox 360's sales are still very impressive at approximately 85m units sold.

But yeah, they should be good for a while yet. Nintendo just need to release games a little more frequently than they are already and that should shift them back into gear.
