Nintendo Explains Why The New 2DS XL Exists

Reggie Fils-Aime says the New 2DS XL is for consumers who want something "in between."

Nintendo recently announced another model in its long-running 3DS line: the New 2DS XL combines the screen size and clamshell form factor of the 3DS XL, the built-in NFC capability of the New Nintendo 3DS, and the budget price associated with the 2DS.

With so many different iterations of the console now available--not forgetting the standard 3DS or the New 3DS--some people have wondered why the New 2DS XL exists at all.

Now, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has said the device is for consumers who want something "in between" the 2DS and the 3DS XL.

"The Nintendo 2DS really focused on that entry level gamer," he told Time. "The four-, five-, six-year old that is just getting into gaming, but wants to play Mario Kart, wants to have a Super Mario Bros. experience, wants to play Pokémon. And we feel with Nintendo 3DS XL at $199 that it's a fully-featured product, that it is, if you will, the Cadillac of handheld gaming. And then we heard from consumers, 'Boy, I wish there was something in between.'" That's why the company decided to make the 2DS XL, says Fils-Aime.

The executive had previously said the that the device "still packs the same power" of the New Nintendo 3DS XL.

The Nintendo 2DS originally launched in 2013. Billed as an entry-level device for children, the system features two screens but no clamshell hinge and no 3D capability. It launched at $130, before Nintendo cut the price down to $80 / £80.

The New 2DS XL, meanwhile, will launch on July 28 in North America and Europe, priced at $149 / £133. Australian players will get it earlier on June 15, costing AU $200.

The announcement of this system came not long after Nintendo launched the Switch. The system debuted in March and has sold 2.74 million units by Nintendo's latest count.

If Nintendo was smart, which they are clearly not, they should have added compatibility for 3DS/2DS titles on the switch, discontinue the line entirely, and enabled cross platform development. But they are morons. And anyone here saying you should buy a switch over the 3DS or 2DS XL you are a grade a moron. 90% of the games coming out for switch in the next year are indie ports selling for double the price you can get the same damn game for on the 3/2DS today, yesterday, hell three years ago. Switch isn't going to be relevant until at least year three due to nintendo's ridiculous business decisions. They already know they screwed the pooch on the switch. For the record, NIntendo of America tried telling the idiots in Japan exactly the above 50 times to the sounds of deafening ignorant ego. Now they have three sporadic product lines and they already are losing 3rd party support on the switch as we speak.

@Utnayan: Are you high? I am pretty sure Nintendo did exactly as they planned.. Launched a once in a generation game, and changed the way we view at home and mobile gaming. I will continue to support them as they continue to set the bar for innovation in both games and hardware.

@jgrizzly32: Innovation my ass :) This has been done with remote play on a Vita for years with the PS4. The switch is a piss poor portable, has a game library of which the games coming out aside from 5 slated for this year are all available on other platforms, namely, 3DS XL, for half the price as well. I see Switches in stock everywhere already collecting dust. Went to Target, Best Buy, Gamestop, and Walmart all within the past week and saw a minimum of 7 Switches laying there not being purchased. This piece of crap will bomb. And it will bomb HARD.

but I think if you sat down with Zelda you might change your opinion

@collbanth: Dude, they are all over the place. They aren't available on their online stores, but local stock. This isn't news to anyone so quit pretending like there is this massive shortage. The initial wave is over, and now we gauge interest with the main stream, which just happens to be jack shit for interest because it's a half baked garbage console. I own all consoles - even all Nintendo consoles save the N64. I woke up. Time for you too as well. Break out the pledge.

@Utnayan: Yeah... well, idk what town you live in that has all these massive supplies, but from Cincinnati to Dayton they're out. My brother works a gamestop in tampa, they're out. best friend lives in san Francisco, they're out. I'm not saying there some supply somewhere... but no way you've seen 7 laying around. I agree the lack of games upon release.... but I see a lot of potential in It as it's a really powerful handheld. I'm playing it more than I do my pro

@collbanth: @collbanth: what part of cincinnati you in? I'm in Nky. Would be fun to meet up somewhere and try out local/lan portable mode on mario kart! Honestly I was mega surprised with puyo puyo tetris too. Wife's been having a blast with that one. I'm a PC gamer so the switch is the first console I've bought as a game console since N64! (I had a PS3 but bought it for the BR player like 90% of the other owners did).

@Utnayan: in order to do that they would have had to make the switch a duel screen system which would have meant a Wii U style tablet and would have made it more expensive. The Switch is setting sales records for Nintendo with no games to play on it, and they plan to sell 16 million units this year as well as a few million 3ds/2ds units. Tales of Nintendo demise have been grossly exaggerated

So Nintendo doesn't have the resources to continuing selling a massively in demand item like the nes mini, yet, it has the resources to put out ten twenty different versions of the same, the resources to bother with the "in between" customers.

But hey will continue to support nintendo up until they burn their house down, and even then probably.

The 3DS provides much more profit for them than the NES Classic does. Nintendo is always about profit, but I guess any company is.

I wish I could have gotten my hands on one of those stupid NES Classics though :/

$199.99 for a full power system. $149.99 for the same thing, just without 3D. If it was really an entry level system, it should be $99.99. If you get a new game with it, it's basically the same price. Unless the games are going to be cheaper, since they don't have to add 3D. Still, $149.99 is a bit steep.

It seems like you may have misunderstood the article. They already have an entry level system priced at 79.99 currently (the 2DS). The 2DS XL isn't an entry level system, it is an in between system. That is, in between the prices of 79.99 and 199.99.

@doctor_mg: Maybe they should go a little more lower and get that $79.99 down to $69.99 and the sell the 2DS XL for $139.99. I know it don't sound like much but 10 Bucks is ten bucks

@angrycreep: I think 139.99 would be great, but 149.99 really isn't bad for a 3DS. You typically can't find many used 3DS's for anything lower than that, let alone new 3DS's or XL variants.

The 3DS is in need of a price drop though. It has held the same price since the first price drop back in 2011.

Sony could have totally dominated the handheld market with the Vita if it actually had tried to. Say what you will but the vita stomps the 3ds all day. The handheld line is the real only thing keeping Nintendo afloat for quite a few years now (also the only one of their products you can actually find at a store)

@mentalrevolt: I don't know what you smoking but i don't wanted. Nintendo has dominated the handheld market for 3 decades now and the only ones that stay there for a short time was the Game gear. Sony handhelds has manage to stay afloat but is not because is selling or competing with Nintendo is only because Sony refuse to admit that there handheld got run over and they just refuse to kill the thing and put it out of their misery. Don't give me that crap about the only thing that's keeping Nintendo afloat for a few years are their handhelds because the Wii sold more than 100 million consoles and that wasn't that long ago.

@angrycreep: vita stomps 3ds and if it was done correctly would have been a huge opponent. And you're talking about fucking wii sales? That shit stopped selling 6 years ago and the only reason it sold so well to begin with is because it got hyped up and people bought it to death before realizing it was just a gimmick with poor motion controls. Every wii unit sold now sits on a dusty shelf or in a box and is long forgotten. Lie to yourself if you want but you aren't fooling anyone else fanboy.

@mentalrevolt: the Vita does not stomp the 3ds power is never a substitute for bad games and Vita does not have anything worth mentioning besides uncharted

.

That platform unlike the wiiu which had support by Nintendo had absolutely no support from Sony a year after launch they let it fail

You know what else

The Vita only sold 13 million that's a whooping 67 millions less than PSP sold

The 3ds was at least able to sell almost half what DS did and it's still going strong

@mentalrevolt: I don't know where you coming with that 6 years because it look more like 5 or 4 years ago and even if it was 6 years ago, 6 years is not an eternity like you are trying to make it looked. And no matter if the Wii's sold are collecting dust now, they still count as sold you idiot. If you really believe that the Vita had a chance you must be living in a fantasy world because the Vita never had or did anything to come anywhere near Nintendo, Nintendo's handheld was light years ahead of the Vita and the Vita was never a threat to Nintendo's handheld. Case Closed.

@angrycreep: Yeah Nintendo fooled people into buying a wii, which they tried to do again with the WiiU but people weren't stupid enough to fall for it twice. And seriously DS light years ahead? A poorly made handheld that breaks easily and came very very close to failing outright when it came out? Lol you're obviously drunk. DS does absolutely nothing special and 90% of its user base are little children, given to them so their parents can shut em up for a few minutes. The fact that you can remote play a PS4 with a vita while flying across the country 35000 feet up is better than anything Nintendo could ever dream of and that's just one feature. Everything about it from base features to controls to graphics and overall hardware literally spanks the DS. Once again, should they have worked with it as hard as they have ps4 it would have easily blow DS completely away. Ha case closed my ass fanboy.

@mentalrevolt: Light years ahead in turns of sales idiot. Tells you everything you need to know about the juggernaut of Nintendo's handhelds. They don't need to blow you away in turns of power they can be less powerful and have a duel screen and it flies of the shelves and sell like cup cakes. Sony didn't put anything behind it because it was a loosing battle that they were not gonna win and instead they choose to put that effort in something that definitely could win in the PS4. PS Vita was just another of like many before that just fell miserably going against a Nintendo handheld. I'm not a fanboy i'm just telling the truth and is killing you and your ignorant delusional mind.

@angrycreep: lol oh NOW it's light years ahead in sales and I'm the idiot because I'm just supposed to assume that's what you're talking about? Haha damn the ignorance that spews from you is hilarious. Facts are the DS came super close to being a failure at start, and of it wasn't catered to children probably would have. They don't fly off the shelves that fast either, you can find them anywhere. Neither psp or vita failed miserably either. Lol and yes, you are most definitely a fanboy.

PS, the DS came out in 2004, if the 14 different versions of it combined HADN'T sold that many in 13 years (a lot of which are the same consumers buying more than one version) it would be pretty pathetic.

Nintendo doesn't have unlimited resources, so they kill the highly sought-after NES Classic, then they release a similar product that slots between two others.

I'm sure this move makes perfect sense to Nintendo, but I sure as hell can't make sense of it.

So, "we heard from gamers that they wanted something in between." So you listened to your customers and made the 2DS XL, yet you won't listen to your customers and make more NES Classics? Right....

But seriously, the 3DS should have dropped in price now. Instead, you have to make more parts, more boxes, more shipments and make retailers stock yet another god damned SKU.
