Nintendo Explains Why The New 2DS XL Exists

Reggie Fils-Aime says the New 2DS XL is for consumers who want something "in between."

Nintendo recently announced another model in its long-running 3DS line: the New 2DS XL combines the screen size and clamshell form factor of the 3DS XL, the built-in NFC capability of the New Nintendo 3DS, and the budget price associated with the 2DS.

With so many different iterations of the console now available--not forgetting the standard 3DS or the New 3DS--some people have wondered why the New 2DS XL exists at all.

Now, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has said the device is for consumers who want something "in between" the 2DS and the 3DS XL.

"The Nintendo 2DS really focused on that entry level gamer," he told Time. "The four-, five-, six-year old that is just getting into gaming, but wants to play Mario Kart, wants to have a Super Mario Bros. experience, wants to play Pokémon. And we feel with Nintendo 3DS XL at $199 that it's a fully-featured product, that it is, if you will, the Cadillac of handheld gaming. And then we heard from consumers, 'Boy, I wish there was something in between.'" That's why the company decided to make the 2DS XL, says Fils-Aime.

The executive had previously said the that the device "still packs the same power" of the New Nintendo 3DS XL.

The Nintendo 2DS originally launched in 2013. Billed as an entry-level device for children, the system features two screens but no clamshell hinge and no 3D capability. It launched at $130, before Nintendo cut the price down to $80 / £80.

The New 2DS XL, meanwhile, will launch on July 28 in North America and Europe, priced at $149 / £133. Australian players will get it earlier on June 15, costing AU $200.

The announcement of this system came not long after Nintendo launched the Switch. The system debuted in March and has sold 2.74 million units by Nintendo's latest count.

If Reggie claims it to be in "between" for "entry level gamers" then why dafuq does it not cost $99 instead, and with the console's EOL approaching, for that matter, why was this iteration even released this late in the stage of the console's duration? The 2DS XL looks nice and all, but pointless release if you ask me. I'll just stick w/ my standard 3DS instead.

@superklyph: I think this is perfect for her then. I mean I have the new 3ds xl, but I never use the 3D. I wish this would have come out a long time ago! The price difference is pretty good in my opinion. 150 bucks gets you a system that has an awesome library of games. What's not to like?

Switch certainly boosts the interest of getting the complete duo. I didn't even consider getting any DS before. But now getting even compacter coffee table machine doesn't sound like such a bad idea, especially in the black/cyan colors.

It is not like the 3d effect was fun to use... cool for 10min but after that it was totally useless, just another gimmick that bring nothing on the table, it also amde the frame rate drop considerably even on the N3DS ...

so good thing

I guess it also mean that they won't give up the 3DS soon even if they have the Switch which is also portable.

I have no doubt that Nintendo will make a portable unit that will play Switch games for younger kids. They will call it Switch Jr.

@nintendians:

It saves on the cost of production if they don't add the effect to the hardware at all.

@nintendians: Shhh. Quiet. You will upset the Nintendo fans that think the 2DS XL is anything but a 3DS XL without that small lever to the right, and that game developers actively have to design games to take advantage of hardware based 3D.

This is really nice because the New 3DS XL has been mostly unavailable online for months, unless you want to pay more from a third-party vendor.

Reggie... The New 3DSXL is certainly not the "Cadillac" of handheld gaming. It is just the best device to play Pokémon on... If it was possible I would own a Vita to play those games.

The games are selling that piece of crap. I really hope they move all their resources to the Switch and perhaps make a Portable Only Optimized Switch.

@obsidian_born: I have a New 3DS XL and couldn't agree more with you. It is pretty expensive for its performance. The 3d is great, but it's great mainly because it soften the edges of the poor resolution of the 3ds games.

And like 90% of the 3ds owners I bought because of Pokemon, but it's also great it has Zelda, Mario and etc. But most of those games I prefer to play in 4k in a Wii or Wii U Emulator in my PC.

They overcharge for a crappy handheld console, but still manage to sell lots because of its exclusives. At least they've done a good handheld now, too bad they won't ever release Pokemon for Switch because they want to sell concomitantly a crappy handheld.

@obsidian_born: wuhhh? its not only the best handheld, it's one of the best systems ever! and yeah the games are selling the system... what else sells systems lol? The vita was cool as a portable psx, but other than that it was pretty terrible.

I do agree with you that they need to focus on the switch and stop rehashing ds era. the switch store needs some of those games!

@collbanth: The 3DS isn't very confortable to play unlike the Vita. 3D is also pretty much useless and drive the cost up. But yeah more people bought a 3DS because of Pokémon and so the thing sells a lot, a lot more than the Vita.

@clefdefa: i agree with you there, the vita looked amazing... but there were some stupid design choices (touch pad on back). the 3d is actually not that bad, especially with the face recognition in the new one... although it was a little gimmicky. I mean it had way more than pokemon on it

@collbanth: Touch pad on the back is like the 3D thing on the 3DS. Useless outside of like 3 games otherwise it isn't responding at all.

Yeah I agree the N3DS makes the 3D effect more usable than before but the only game I found that it made a difference is Super Mario 3D world, some courses are way easier with the 3d otherwise I didn't find it fun to use on top of the fact that the frame rate drop.

I know there is more game to it than Pokémon but let's face it, Pokémon probably sold more than 10x all other games combine.

@clefdefa: yeah, I wasn't referring to sales specifically, but to just all round great games... and the fact that it had the ds compat was a huge bonus.

as for the 3d, I would say the touch pad is worse, but yeah, the 3d was more like improved depth perception.

I've always been a sony guy, but the vita was probably the worst inexpensive investment ive ever made. I'm hoping the switch isn't the same once that "newness" wears off. But Nintendo always has strong rpgs on their handhelds so I'm not too worried.

LOL. The entry level was supposed to be the 2DS hence it's noticeably different design and no 3D. New 2DS XL is just a New 3DS XL without the 3D feature that was optional in the first place. Entry level is more about price anyway and they STILL wont drop the price of any models or release the regular New 3DS in North America. Nintendo is full of it.
