Nintendo Direct Announcements: Switch News & Games Revealed

Roll up, roll up! Nintendo Switch news here! Read all about it!

Nintendo's February 2019 Direct presentation on Wednesday has wrapped up, and as promised it delivered us some solid new information on the upcoming Fire Emblem game for Nintendo Switch, Three Houses. That unfortunately isn't releasing as soon as expected--it's been delayed until this summer--but the Direct also delivered reveals of some brand-new Switch games. In addition, we got welcome updates on existing Switch games, with new free and paid DLC coming to a bunch of our favorite titles, including Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Along with some exciting news for Mario and Zelda --sorry, Animal Crossing fans and those holding out hope for Mother 3--we learned about a slate of games and demos releasing today. Some of these are already available on the Nintendo Switch Eshop--and several are free--and the biggest surprise among those is a new, free-to-play Tetris game that is essentially a battle royale experience where you compete against 98 other players. It's an unusual concept, but one that's actually very fun. Now, let's get in to all the biggest news from the Direct.

Mario Maker 2!!! Im Sold!! The original sold like wildfire. People love being able to create their own Mario worlds& play others crazy worlds online. Next: Daemon X Machina, played Demo, looked pretty good. Im sold. Astral Chain, Im Sold, and Coming soon Yoshi CW, always love a good Yoshi game.

Thats a lot of quality games without mentioning Links Awakening which obviously was huge news.

@nintendians: When Nintendo itself doesn't really support 3D on a platform designed for 3D, it's pretty much dead. 3D TVs aren't being sold anymore (at least in the west), so it would be putting in a feature that has an ever-shrinking hard cap on the number of households who could experience it.

@zmanbarzel: well it's a optional thing anyway and their game do look great in stereoscopic 3d if done right, too bad any 3ds system isn't as strong as the wii u and "switch" is.

looking forward to Zelda, Mario Maker, and Bloodstained. Yoshi might be good as well.

Surprised they didn't announce the HK sequel as well, which seems to be the best offering of everything.

Pretty good Direct, and a good day for Nintendo.

I thought they may have announced a remastered trilogy of Metroid Prime.

Mario Maker 2, Link's Awakening being remade, Fire Emblem Three Houses details, Bloodstained getting a release window, DQ 11 with its awesome "2D DQ Mode", Astral Chain, and maybe that Oninaki game were the big highlights for me. FF games being ported over is nice and all, but I have so much else to get right now.

@xantufrog: played DQ XI on the PS4 and it’s a long grind.

Playing Tetris 99 now and it’s amazingly addictive.

Rune Factory was a huge surprise. I was shocked when it had the most play-time logged on my 3DS (200 hours).

Glad the series is still alive...who knew farming and loot went so well together

The Switch really packed a lot into this Direct.

@kami_amaya: What makes you think that the switch will have better music? It has the same music for all platforms, except PC you can mod it with better music.

Nintendo just made my year. I went from "nothing on the radar" to "GIMMIE! GIMMIE! GIMMIE!".

Loving the Mario Maker 2 news, I'd have been happy with a port but this looks awesome!

Zelda: Link's Awakening, too good to be true! One the best Zelda games long overdue to be made available in a new format.

Dragon Quest Builders 2, the only game I was certain to buy before this Direct. It looks just as fun and time consuming as it's predecessor.

Finally, Dragon Quest XI! Months of whining like an anime fan on prom night finally laid to rest with this announcement and a solid 2019 release estimation.

Also, there's apparently an AVGN: I & II Deluxe bundle coming for the Switch. NICE!

@professor_megaman: I've been waiting for DQXI on Switch, and was hoping for an earlier release like everyone else. But I am so happy I waited, the orchestrated soundtrack and Japanese VO make it totally worth the wait.

@arupakku: I'm happy they included the "16-bit" visual mode from the 3DS version. That was one of the things I was certain Western gamers were going to miss out on. I've a mind to play through the whole game twice using each graphic setting.

And why not? I played through DQV (3DS) three times just to finish it with each of the three brides. What can I say? DQ is the perfect way to kill massive amounts of free time.

@andrew134: Yeah it would have been nice to hear some mention of Luigi's Mansion, and Metroid Prime Trilogy, and Animal Crossing, and Pikmin.

Well at least we know Luigi's Mansion 3 is on the way.
