Nintendo Direct: A Beloved Star Wars Game Is Coming To Switch This Month

And a port for another Star Wars game is scheduled for early next year.

During the September 2019 Nintendo Direct, the company announced that Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is coming to Switch this September. Though no longer canon, Jedi Outcast is one of the most beloved games amongst the Star Wars community.

First releasing in 2002, Jedi Outcast puts you in the shoes of Kyle Katarn, who finds himself facing off against dark Jedi Desann. Though a first-person shooter, Jedi Outcast does eventually give you the opportunity to play around with a lightsaber and use Force powers. The game was critically acclaimed for both its well-written single-player campaign and popular multiplayer. Unfortunately, only the single-player is being ported to the Switch version.

In GameSpot's Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast review, Amer Ajami wrote, "[Jedi Outcast's] strong points--especially its combat--overshadow whatever problems Jedi Outcast may have early on. It's a very slick game that borrows the best elements from past shooters, introduces a number of its own great twists, and then combines these elements to make something that will be highly enjoyable both for those who like shooters and those who simply like Star Wars. And if you happen to like both, then you'll be especially impressed. Jedi Outcast certainly becomes tough later on, but once you learn to master all your force powers and get a good grip on your lightsaber, you'll feel unstoppable--the sight of Katarn effortlessly cutting through, leaping over, and pushing back crowds of enemies is a sight to behold. And once you finish the single-player game, the many multiplayer options will keep you coming back for more."

Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast is coming to Nintendo Switch on September 24.

Though not announced on the Direct, StarWars.com reports that Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is coming to Nintendo Switch too. Another beloved Star Wars game, Jedi Academy won't be coming to Switch until early 2020. Another shooter, Jedi Academy sees you take on the role of Kyle's apprentice, Jaden Korr, who's assigned to complete missions across the galaxy for both his master and Luke Skywalker.

This article was a rollercoaster. First I click hoping it was Jedi Outcast or Jedi Academy and not some other old game. Got SUPER excited seeing it was Jedi Outcast. Then kept reading and saw they aren't adding multiplayer. The campaign was ok. Multiplayer was my life for years. That's a no-buy for me =/

Gotta love how GameSpot's headlines are more clickbait than their competitors (IGN, etc).

I wished they'd announced a complete remake of Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2/Misteries of the Sith as well, coincidentally I'm replaying the whole Jedi Knight saga and man I forgot how awesome even the first chapter was (I'm not counting Dark Forces 1 since it wasn't a Jedi Knight game).
A new remastered version of all the saga would be awesome, those games still holds up extremely well but there are some parts that would really benefit from some polishing.

@giocher: I would love a Jedi Knight remaster. Those early 3D era visuals are pretty rough going back to these days, but I've got loads of nostalgia for those games.

I was 12 when this came out. The year before I discovered online gaming after buying Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2 in a bargain bin in Staples. I played both games on MSN Gaming Zone...

When the Jedi Outcast trailer was released, I was obsessed and counting down the days. My older sister saw my excitement, and preordered both the game AND strategy guide for me at EBGames. On the day of release, my friends came over, but I just wanted them to leave so I could play multiplayer in peace.

damn this got me really nostalgic lol...

I have no plans to buy the Switch, but man this is an awesome news. Hope they bring Rogue Leader, Rogue Squadron and maybe Jedi Power Battles too. JPB was the stuff.

Ok Nintendo, you finally did it. I haven't owned a Nintendo system since the N64 but, it's time to buy a Switch.

@ahpuck: They are also coming out on the same date for the PS4. Jedi Academy has had its release date moved up the the 24 of this month as well.

@march202002: I'm not buying it for Jedi Academi, I'm buying it for the RPGs and SNES games on the go. Nothing against the PS4 tho, it's a heck of a system and rightfully in the number one spot for this generation.

@Blade_Runner_07: it's already there, both Jedi Outcast & Academy came out on the Original Xbox and thus can be played on subsequent consoles. ;)

@giocher: oh I wish you were right. Even though I love Xbox strive towards backwards compatibility, only included Jedi Academy, and not Jedi Outcast made it to the current generation (Xbox One) consoles. So maybe you can play Outcast on Xbox, and X360, but not XONE.

I bring it up because it's puzzling they would refrain from making Outcast backwards compatible on Xbox One and NOT be included here in this re-release with Switch and PS4.

@saltymemesoup: Gameplay-wise, yes. Academy is the better game. Story-wise, Jedi Outcast is more fun to play through. As much as I want this to come to the only current-gen console I own, I know it'll be the flavor of the week and I'll likely not pick it up more than once for nostalgia.

That as opposed to Battlefront II (2005). I still fire that up on my XONE and play a round of galactic conquest over a couple of hours on a weekend. Maybe twice a year. Any game that gives you an interactive playset and all the action figures is worth it forever.

@jyml8582: bro Im turning 29 later this year :D Not 30 yet. But I remember playing this online via MSN Gaming Zone... ahh the memories. I was turning 12 when this was released. I still remember the day like it was yesterday.

Lucasarts was on a roll back then. The following year they released Star Wars Galaxies too, and 13 year old me was going bonkers over it.
