Nintendo Denies Wii U Production Cancellation Report

Wii U production will not end this year, according to a new report.

Following a report yesterday that the Wii U would cease production sometime this year (presumably to make way for the secretive NX), Nintendo has responded denying the rumors.

The statement, acquired by Japanese site IT Media and discovered following Twitter posts from ZhugeEX, quotes Nintendo as saying, "The [Nikkei] report did not come from within our company." Nintendo reportedly further clarified, "The company plans to continue production through [and beyond] the next fiscal year."

We've reached out to Nintendo in the US for further clarification and will update this story with more details as they're made available.

While Nintendo's latest console has been less successful than the ubiquitous Wii, ceasing production entirely this year would still come as a surprising move. However, if the NX has backwards compatibility, it could quickly render the Wii U obsolete. We expect to learn more about Nintendo's plans for the future during this year's E3.

Nintendo will continue productions but in small amounts, while it doesn't sale as many as its competition the factories themselves are owned by members of Nintendo's board itself. This has been this way since Yamauchi well before Iwata, it is also one of the reasons why Nintendo has not been able to innovate as well. While Sony, Sega moved onto cd roms, Nintendo would not because the board members and decision makers make a personal profit because they bought up and own the factories where the consoles are made. Unlike their heavily subsidized competitors, it is as important to push cheap hardware at a profit, as software itself.

This is also why the NX does not impress, a moderately powerful tablet that connects with a base station to output to tvs and recharge. It will not even be as powerful as the wii U in terms of raw processing power. It may have a high resolutions but on a 10" screen, lacking pure crunching power for physics, enemy AI, AA, and complex shadows. But at least the NX can play the popular chinese android games that are very popular in Asia and those are the studios Nintendo as been making business partners of over the last year.

Nintendo will be bowing out of the AAA gaming race and consoles and start chasing the mobile Chinese market -which is quite lucrative for some.

Uh huh. We'll see. We'll also see if they continue at the same LEVELS of production. Cutting production by 95% = "still producing into next year and beyond"

--i also 'just happen to' understand how the industry works
--they arent gonna quit making wiius
--but
--the news and reports that Nintendo have given us over the last year
--ALL indicate that wiiU is officially(soon to be) dead hardware to them

Man there has been complete and total meltdowns caused by the initial rumor. I felt sorry for people who took it so seriously.

You'd have to be a little naive to believe they'd drop production immediately on or following the release of a new product. Unless it made the existing product completely redundant and inferior, which I suppose is possible.

That's never been how any console manufacturer has operated. The Wii itself didn't have production discontinued until the end of 2013, over a full year after the WiiU was released which was basically a direct replacement with full backwards compatibility.

That report was pretty irreverent of what's happened in the past, and it likely wouldn't be smart business, no matter how bad the WiiU is selling, to just shut it down immediately.

However, if the NX has backwards compatibility, it could quickly render the Wii U obsolete.

For NX to have Wii U BC, it would need to sell the Gamepad separately, which Nintendo has never done.

@lostn: For NX to have Wii U BC, it would need to use an IBM PowerPC CPU, which isn't such a great choice anymore.

@XxParasite: Unless they have genius software engineers.

360 used PowerPC, X1 uses x86, but MS was able to make BC work.

But there is the problem of that tablet gamepad being expensive. Unless you already own a Wii U and can reuse that. But then, why is BC such a big deal if you already own a Wii U?

@lostn: Except that they didn't get BC to work, technically. When you put an Xbox disc into a 360, it makes sure that it's a supported game, then runs it if it is. That's partial BC. When you put a 360 disc into an X1, it makes sure that it's a supported game, then downloads a special version if it is. It does not run the disc; it instead runs a special version that likely has all the PPC->x86 translation already done. That's fake BC. The MAME devs would cry.

@XxParasite: I will accept fake BC if it allows me to play old games on a new system.

I'm not expecting an across the board BC solution that runs everything without glitches. Not even a launch PS3 with hardware BC could play every PS2 game glitch free.

@lostn: But it *could* play them, right from the disc. In fact, even the non-BC PS3s are perfectly willing to play PS2 games if you first rip them to ISOs. Microsoft's solution is an expensive one, and I don't think that we can expect every game that they make available to stay available forever.

@lostn: the controller is rumored to be an evolved version of the gamepad (not necessarily the one that just got "leaked" with buttons in the screen). The controller itself will probably work as the wii u gamepad if the nx has backwards compatibility.

@lostn: They are selling them separately in Japan. Although, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of the controller connecting to a smart phone or a tablet to become a gamepad.

Scaled back production of both the Wii U and 3DS products seems like a far more realistic scenario for this year and next, rather than a complete cessation of production. Nintendo's focus at this point is definitely on the NX. The production output of the PS3 dropped by 80% in the first 6 months following the release of the PS4 - there's no reason to expect anything different with the Wii U and 3DS since both systems are sold at a profit.

@7tizz: Considering every single Nintendo console has been pretty damn great, you're probably not far off there, although I would give that accolade to the original Wii. I don't think the Wii U is a bad console, just a misunderstood one. It can't be blamed for lack of developer support, that's Nintendo's doing.

@El_Zaggy: Exactly. No one is going to buy a system that is being discontinued, let alone Nintendo's already shallow pool of devs making games for a console that is no longer being manufactured. I'm not saying that they are discontinuing production, but if they are, they surely won't want people to know about it this early.

It was obvious that they would deny it; If it was a lie they'll deny it for being a lie and if it was true, they'll deny it to prevent the sales situation from getting worse.
