Nintendo Congratulates Microsoft on Xbox's 15th Anniversary

"Happy anniversary, Xbox!"

Nintendo and Microsoft may be competitors, but that hasn't stopped Nintendo from speaking out today to congratulate Microsoft on the Xbox's 15th anniversary.

Writing on Twitter today, Nintendo said, "Happy anniversary, Xbox! Congratulations on 15 fantastic years." The tweet is accompanied by a happy-looking Mario.

Nintendo apparently sent Xbox boss Phil Spencer a hard-to-find NES Classic before the console's launch last week. Microsoft Studios GM Shannon Loftis wasn't so lucky.

The original Xbox launched 15 years ago today, on November 15, 2001. The console was followed up by the Xbox 360 in 2005 and the Xbox One in 2013. Microsoft's next Xbox console, Project Scorpio, is slated to come out in holiday 2017.

Microsoft is celebrating the Xbox's birthday today by giving away DLC in Halo 5 and Forza Horizon 3. The company also has a pretty cool Snapchat story today, featuring a behind-the-scenes look at the Xbox and the people who made it. Add "Xbox" on Snapchat to see the video.

Nintendo's next console, the Nintendo Switch, is scheduled to debut in March 2017. Nintendo will announce the console's price, specs, and launch lineup in January. Just today, it was reported that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild may miss the console's launch, with a Mario game taking its place.

Not really article worthy.

But I guess it's a rare one showing it's better to be humble, than bitter_

That's cool of them to do. Nintendo rarely compliments their competitors. Your turn, Sony! NOT.

I just got Forza Horizon 3, tried to play it yesterday and my install was interrupted multiple times, I had to walk away and come back in the morning! I miss the days when I could put a new game in my Xbox and play it right away.

I'm already starting to miss the fanboy flamewars, to which game makers used to pour fuel on. Now the hug-hug-movement is reaching even to these guys

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: They dont do it anymore because it doesnt make sense anymore. Back in the day it was dog eat dog and the companies were ran by Ceos who were concerned with pissing contests. It no longer has context or meaning in todays market. Only the fanboys still carry it on to make themselves feel good about the piece of plastic and circuits they bought and the corporation theyre a fan of.

Anniversary? Did I miss something? Is the original Xbox still being sold? Or are we going to celebrate every piece of hardware that has ever been created now?

Wow. Phil Spencer has started a pretty cool trend among competing console makers. We really don't see this happening in any other industry, so, kudos to him. On a side note, I'm pretty sure I a NES classic selling on eBay for like $199 USD with his name on it... :-b

@consolehaven: Spencer is a class act. I've always liked the guy though I don't necessarily agree with his ideas. He's honest, smart, and respects the competition; something which his predecessors didn't do.

IT's funny how the Big 3 have matured over the years and give respected nods and credit to each other. But the fan base are still a bunch of bratty 10 year olds who won't grow up.

@davillain-: That's because a lot of them actually are bratty 10 year olds. The more vocal of your stupid camp (and it is stupid to base your identity on a piece of consumer electronics), the more likely you're a dumb kid trying to prove something.

Nintendo figures it better suck up since it will be in the business of only porting software to the Xbox, PS4 and phones in a couple years.

@inkman66: Lame joke dude. If Nintendo went third-party companies would be throwing money at them for exclusive's, like when Kojima left Konami.

Are they really competitors? Since at least GameCube, my friends and I have considered the Nintendo console to be a companion console to our main gaming platform.

360 was only 4 years after original Xbox? Sheesh, that's like the new console generation starting in 10 months time with PS5 etc. weird.

@tom_cat_01: The 360 was 4 years after, but support for the original Xbox continued for at least two years. The Xbox 360 actually had a 7 year life span before Xbox1 which was planned and made official, but I never believed it. Funny thing, there is a clear evolution in graphics from the first year all the way to the last on both Xbox 360 and PS3. Having a mid cycle refresh is smart, in my opinion. Not having exclusives doesn't mean games won't take advantage of its horsepower. There will be better graphical fidelity, and more effects as well as better resolution. The only criteria is that the games can't play better / give an advantage to Scorpio owners in terms of frame rate. So, there is lots and lots of room for Devs to play with, especially in terms of artistic vision.

@tom_cat_01: technicaly the pro is the ps5. we just wont get to see any games that show off its power because its being forced to run at the same speed as the ps4. if you get me. no exclusives.

@deathwish026: it'the exact same tech with a shrink in size which allowed them to over clock and basically add a 2nd gpu. Cool idea, but not a generational leap by any stretch.

Typically, a new hardware generation has about 10x the power of the previous generation. The ps4 has the same gpu, same amount of ram(well 500mb more freed up,) both slightly overclocked, same os, and they effectively added a 2nd identical gpu beside the original.

@louixiii: if my a bazillion years ago you actually mean less than a year ago, yes. Microsoft published Minecraft on Wii U in North America under Mojang name, and in Japan under the Microsoft Japan name.

On top of that, there have been countless games released on Nintendo platforms that were developed by Microsoft owned studios, that are MS IPs.

@louixiii: Let's get anal about how I said something please. Microsoft has published a game on a Nintendo platform before; HOWEVER, multiple Microsoft IP's have shown up on multiple Nintendo platforms, including the Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS and Wii U consoles.

While not DIRECTLY publishing the titles, they did indeed OWN the IP, and in some cases(ie: Viva Pinata: Pocket Paradise), they are listed as the distributor of the game. So, what I am saying is this: It's not unheard of for Microsoft and Nintendo to be 'friendly' with each other; especially with Nintendo's comments on not being a direct competitor to the Xbox brand.

Even if I don't have a single Microsoft console, good for them. They never really led. Xbox, PS2 crushed it. 360, PS3 managed to go toe-to-toe with it despite its late launch (or perhaps it was the 360 that was early) and was CRUSHED by the Wii. Now, PS4 vs XB1. Still struggling to the point they want to create the Scorpio which seems to be a next-gen console more than an upgrade (unlike the PS4 Pro).
