Nintendo apologizes for lack of Wii U software

President Satoru Iwata says desire to meet quality standards has led to delays, promises more new games beginning in March.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata apologized today for a drought of new Wii U releases in the first few months of the system's availability. He explained that Nintendo understands the need for new titles surrounding the Wii U launch, but also acknowledged that achieving quality is of the utmost importance.

"Nintendo takes seriously its responsibility offer a steady stream of new titles in the very early days of a new platform to establish a good lineup of software," Iwata said during a Nintendo Direct briefing this morning. "On the other hand, we also firmly believe we have to offer quality experiences when we release new titles. Based on our software development schedules at the end of last year, we concluded we should spend a little more time to satisfy our Nintendo standard of quality.

"I apologize to those supporting Wii U about the lack of new titles from Nintendo in January and February. But please understand we will have new titles to offer from March onward. We are planning a steady stream of games from spring to summer."

In recent weeks, Nintendo has bumped a number of "launch window" titles further into the horizon, including The Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Wii Fit U, and Game & Wario.

Elsewhere in the Nintendo Direct presentation, Iwata revealed a bevy of new first-party games, including a brand-new Wii U Legend of Zelda game and a Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker high-definition remake. Other first-party Wii U titles revealed during the presentation included new Yoshi, Mario, and Mario Kart offerings.

@DarkMasterShake @Nibraybirk Same reason to buy SNES and 64? I will give you that from the GameCube on Nintendo has been pretty stale. But the SNES and 64 defined catorgories of games. I will buy a Wii U for the Nintendo titles. Juat like a buy a PS3 for it's exclusive titles. Granted the PS3 has much better volume/quality games. But if Nintendo goes Belly Up you betcha Sony will be knocking on thier door. Afterall the Playstation is a Nintendo Spinn-off.

Well the Nintendo spin off thing was nintendo being pants on head stupid. "Discs won't catch on, people won't be able to stand the loading times" boy they must have felt stupid.

Im just glad that they have stopped doing articles about DMC.

Wait...how are you going to do that? Those games won't run on the Wii U?

Oh and last time I checked there are only a few sequels to those good IPs. Mario is like, what, on 60-ish? Yoshi maybe 20 and Zelda 12? Oh and those HD Remakes that are 8 years to late..I bet you can't wait.

Super Mario has less than 25 entries actually, and it's been around for nearly 3 decades, Yoshi has only had 2 entries (this being the third) and you are almost correct about Zelda. Considering that Nintendo's major first party games are a beacon of quality, of course I can't wait.

@abHS4L88 @WingChopMasta Exactly. Everything you just said there is exactly right and exactly the problem. 3 decades and still milking the franchise and shoehorning his name into other crap to try and sell it. You do not need a new console to push a side scrollers.

The reason they only have a handful of Zelda's is because it take creative developers and an actual budget to push out a big story driven world. Mario is literally copy and paste with some 'new' things thrown in every year. Other than Galaxy which is the first real attempt at revitalizing that franchise.

Can you really blame them when each Super Mario games sells extremely well? At least they take the time to make almost every Super Mario title unique that doesn't render previous entries obsolete (aside from the New Super Mario Bros series I guess, but that's only appeared once per platform).

Also Nintendo is only a videogame company, so all of their revenue comes purely from hardware/software sales, not like Sony or Microsoft where they have other departments to help support their game development, so obviously Nintendo is going to need to release "cash cows" but like I said, they're usually of good quality anyways.

@Mariner32 @WingChopMasta @Hellbishop They are not supposed to let shovelware be produced on their system. They had everything to do with it. I heard EA and Activision begged them to demand quality from games on their console to no avail. It was their fault.
