Nintendo apologizes for lack of Wii U software

President Satoru Iwata says desire to meet quality standards has led to delays, promises more new games beginning in March.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata apologized today for a drought of new Wii U releases in the first few months of the system's availability. He explained that Nintendo understands the need for new titles surrounding the Wii U launch, but also acknowledged that achieving quality is of the utmost importance.

No Caption Provided

"Nintendo takes seriously its responsibility offer a steady stream of new titles in the very early days of a new platform to establish a good lineup of software," Iwata said during a Nintendo Direct briefing this morning. "On the other hand, we also firmly believe we have to offer quality experiences when we release new titles. Based on our software development schedules at the end of last year, we concluded we should spend a little more time to satisfy our Nintendo standard of quality.

"I apologize to those supporting Wii U about the lack of new titles from Nintendo in January and February. But please understand we will have new titles to offer from March onward. We are planning a steady stream of games from spring to summer."

In recent weeks, Nintendo has bumped a number of "launch window" titles further into the horizon, including The Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Wii Fit U, and Game & Wario.

Elsewhere in the Nintendo Direct presentation, Iwata revealed a bevy of new first-party games, including a brand-new Wii U Legend of Zelda game and a Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker high-definition remake. Other first-party Wii U titles revealed during the presentation included new Yoshi, Mario, and Mario Kart offerings.

@CHROMEFLAMIN when the new mario, mario kart, zelda etc start coming, you will know whether or not there is nothing. I dont blame you. comments like your type are what will in the future make nintendo fans laugh when they look back.

There's either too much or not enough thrid party support. If only the library of games was steadily released and consistant quality then this would be immaterial.

Next time you would think trying to lure more 3rd party developers, Nintendo. Remember the glorious N64 era?

That was when I was proud to have owned every Nintendo console since the NES. It is true you can handle on your own, but if you could actually get some decent 3rd party games for release schedules of a new console you will do way better than this. Now just waiting for the Vita apologize that would be great Sony.

@Ledah The N64 era didn't have much 3rd party support. GameCube did have more, but did not sell well. the SNES had all the 3rd party support in the world, the wii sucked but sold well. We don't know about wiiu...yet.

@CHROMEFLAMIN I feel your comment is uninformative, not really thought through and quite patronizing. To which controller of which console do you refer to? Utilizing a (touchscreen) display on a home console controller is a relatively new concept, not yet explored to full potential. Yes, I am a Nintendo fan boy.

This drought of Nintendo software has occurred with EVERY Nintendo home console release since N64, both at the beginning of the console's life and the end. It's ridiculous.

@Meta-Gnostic It's all Hiroshi Yamauchi's fault that Nintendo lost 3rd party for their consoles. at least they still have 3rd party support for their handhelds.

@GSJones1994 @Meta-Gnostic I guess you could say that since he was one of the main people to make Nintendo stick with cartridges AFAIK, which lost them 3rd party support to Sega and especially Sony. Thus, on N64 Nintendo 1st party got even more accolades and sales due to lack of 3rd party competition and it hasn't changed since.

I take it that you blame lack of 3rd party support for the early and late drought on Nintendo consoles. I never really thought about it that way, but I guess that's a major reason. Still, you would expect Nintendo to be able to have at least 1-2 1st party games during those drought periods.

I believe that is expected for a new console to have few games on the begin.

Claims of quality are the last line of defense for a company that is failing to provide. How often have we seen games get delayed for one or two years under the guise of quality (by various companies, of course)? I'm not buying it now any more than I did in the past, Nintendo.

@Barujin Blizzard and Valve also do the same thing. They delay games under the guise of quality and they do not deliver in the end.

@flbotavara @Barujin And we always know what Blizzard & Valve are going to release. We never know what to expect from Nintendo - that's why they are so resilient.

Apologize? How about putting in some effort instead of being the complacent company you have for a while now? Eh, that'd take work. Mine as well keep regurgitating the same thing over and over with new coats of paint.

Nintendo's blessed: they are a company whose fans are fine with complacency.

@MirkoS77 I can't think of a company besides Nintendo that does put endless effort into things. If you don't like what they do, then admit that, but don't ignore what they do because you don't like it.

They're always first of the mark each generation (and handheld generation), always altering their controllers, formats, etc. How is any of this just the 'coat of paint'?

To say that Nintendo is blessed ignores the failures of the Virtual Boy, N64, GCN and all the hard-work it took to make it back to being a competitor. How did they achieve this without doing any 'work'?

awwww Nintendo wants to "apologize" and spit out their sorries after raking in the cash on yet another bullshit cash-in. unfortunately too right before the us government started getting asshurt over their corrupt reputation they start pointing the fingers at us. there has been a lot of promise for the world of gaming but the way things are looking we may not have our joy for long.

You don't have to apologize to me Nintendo. I see what you're doing. Your holding back so that the competition doesn't take what ever great idea you have in store for that LCD controller. Especially since Sony and Microsoft have their rumored controllers with built in LCDs on the horizon. Good move. Announce and release your "wow" apps late and don't give them a chance to copy them.

I'm sure it'll be fine. Nintendo has always been a very caring company. I mean, Satoru Iwata even filmed his own unboxing video for the Wii U, he must really be proud of his product.

Take all the time you need with your 1st party titles Nintendo! In the meantime focus on those 3rd party developers and helping them design for the WiiU, Nintendo has already done very well with 3rd party titles for launch and I believe there will be much more to come, it has already done more then what the Wii had done around its launch. WiiU has been out 2 months give it the time it needs to blossom. There's probably already more M rated titles for WiiU then there had ever been on Wii.

@DaneGamer @Vambran

Although with the growing presence of PC gaming and developers giving more attention to it, I fear for the next gen XBox the most, Playstation is fine since they have an extensive catalog of 1st party titles but the back bone of Microsoft's systems are 3rd party games and many gamers are realizing that you can get a cheaper yet superior experience on PCs, sure the investment in building a gaming PC might be more expensive and require more effort, but the pay off in the end will save you a great deal of money. Microsoft does need to put an end to their yearly subscription fees or at least, not charge for online play if they want to remain a viable contender for the next generation, also both companies are at risk of losing the Indie scene if they don't modify their policies since Nintendo has really upped their game with the eShop and Value's Steambox and/or the Ouya/Shield potentially proving to be havens for Indie developers.

I still think it's quite funny that gamers are still playing the power card when determining a console's worth and it's potential success when not a single time in videogame history has power played a huge factor in a console's success, in fact, it played more into a console's failure. Even the PS3, while highly successful in the eyes of gamers and what I consider the best home console of the 7th generation (and I still don't own one! DX) was financially a massive flop.

While I think Assassin's Creed wouldn't have been possible on weaker hardware, Mirror's Edge and Batman could have, just scaled back.

@abHS4L88 @DaneGamer @Vambran without the power found in the ps3 and xbox 360 games like assassin's creed, mirrors edge, bat man etc would not even be around it was the power of the ps3 and xbox 360 that made games like that possible and when the xbox 720 come out and ps4 we will see what new games are born from the better hardware

It was mainly for laughs, if I can find footage of the game, I'll send it to you. I've never owned a Saturn though, my family skipped the 5th generation, I did own a PSone for a few months (only played Grandia on it though) before my parents sold it.

Lol, I remember it but I don't recall ever playing it. I found it interesting that the Saturn had a lot of 3D fighters when the system was actually a 2D beast. There's this one Saturn fighting game I want to try out, it's a SEGA cross over that allows you to play a giant stuffed bear that doesn't animate XD
