Now Playing: Ninja Leaves Twitch To Stream On Mixer - GS News Update

Twitch recently promoted a pornographic stream on the now-defunct channel of popular streamer Tyler "Ninja" Blevins. While that stream has since been pulled, Ninja has responded to say he is "disgusted and so sorry".

The streaming star recently left Twitch to sign an exclusive deal with rival streaming platform Mixer. If you visited his old Twitch page on August 11, however, rather than finding his old broadcasts, you were presented with a list of popular live channels. One of the most-watched streams during this time was a channel showing porn, which appeared on the list of recommendations on Ninja's channel before Twitch eventually shut down the illicit stream.

Ninja posted on Twitter shortly after, apologizing to anybody that saw the recommendation and expressing his disgust that something like this happened.

"I have no say in any of this stuff," he said. "This is the line, this is the straw. I've been trying to get the whole channel taken down to begin with, or at least not promote other streamers and other channels on my brand, on my friggin profile. So for anyone who saw that, I apologize and I'm sorry."

The streamer's Twitch channel has since reverted back to showing his past broadcasts, though this may only be a temporary change.

Emmett Shear, the CEO of Twitch, has apologized to Ninja and explained why these recommendations appeared in the first place.

"Our community comes to Twitch looking for live content," he said in a post on Twitter. "To help ensure they find great, live channels, we’ve been experimenting with showing recommended content across Twitch, including on streamer's pages that are offline." This refutes Ninja's claim that Twitch doesn't do this with any other dormant channels, "Just me."

Shear goes on to say, "This helps all streamers as it creates new community connections. However, the lewd content that appeared on Ninja's offline channel page grossly violates our terms of service, and we've permanently suspended the account in question. We have also suspended these recommendations while we investigate how this content came to be promoted." He concludes with an apology to Ninja, "It wasn't our intent, but it should not have happened. No excuses."

Ninja's move to Mixer has been smooth otherwise. He's already amassed over 1 million subscribers.

There's no problem with porn itself. It's advertising it on a channel / former channel that underage children were watching. That's the problem.

you know that you arent any famous or known when there is no porn add on your site or channel :-D

my adds are desk fans and car insurances...on my video games-only site :-)

Isn't Twitch just game porn without boobs?

The latter part depends on if you're watching any of the female streamers on there.

Twitch big mistake was advertising Porn instead of Hentai.

2 things I take from this story - Twitch is a dumpster fire and Ninja is hypocrite.

I though it was kind of fascinating that he was upset Twitch was using his channel to advertise other streamers before the the accidental porn incident (that's just Twitch doing Twitch things). It wasn't that long ago that Ninja was using Twitch to roll ads for his channel and its News Year Eve event on other people's channels. People called him out for it, he took umbrage and claimed the ads with his face all over them would help bring notice to other twitch channels. Now his channel (again, porn aside) was used to bring notice to other twitch channels and he's angry.

Get angry about the porn, but everything else is just karma.

@Ish_basic: how does that make him a hypocrite? it's not like he was promoting porn himself before

Avatar image for TacticaI

@Ish_basic: Twitch advertising porn on Ninja’s channel has made headlines across the Internet, you better believe him and his team are taking full advantage of the publicity and the space it gave him to air out any little grievance during the process of transitioning to Mixer.

Avatar image for gamingdevil800

@Ish_basic: I basically shrug at this sort of thing when you make an account on these sites you basically tick yes to an agreement that lets them do whatever they like with your account. If he leaves Mixer Microsoft would probably do the same to his account.

I'm confused. Why does he care at ALL about this? It wasn't on his channel. His channel doesn't even exist anymore.

Avatar image for TrueLink
TrueLink

@Thanatos2k: That is one of the main reasons he cares. His page was taken down including all of his archival videos. That's not standard procedure for someone who stops posting videos. The 404 page that replaced it isn't normal either, it was specifically made to push his viewers to other content creators. Furthermore, having porn on his channel's address will reflect directly back on him in the eyes of the parents of his young viewers -- even if he had nothing to do with it.

@TrueLink: But he didn't "stop posting videos" he made a grand spectacle of how he was "leaving Twitch."

So we have to read "news" about pretentious PR based tantrums from net-nobodies now too? -_-

Avatar image for aross2004

@James_xeno: A net nobody? He has millions upon millions of views, and was making over $875k a MONTH on Twitch alone. That's more than $8 million a year, (again, just on Twitch, not even counting YouTube).

Ninja = net somebody. You = net nobody.

@James_xeno: yeah sad news, I'm only here because I wanted to see rants about how porn is immoral.

Avatar image for realguitarhero5

@santinegrete: The point isn't that porn is immoral, it's that someone who appeals to kids doesn't want it being shown at his url. Is that not reasonable?

Avatar image for santinegrete

@realguitarhero5: Your point is good. I just wanted a laugh here, but I wanted to let you know that. And btw, comments questioning the celibrity status of this guy made it. Oh what a surprise.

I have to imagine there's a high percentage of crossover between people who waste their lives watching video game streamers and people who consume ungodly amounts of internet porn. Twitch was just giving those people what they want.

kinda silly twitch is being a baby about it all. sucks they have ignored simple solution that soooo many have talked about to make a more diverse platform.. now it like the US economy... the BIG named player control the majority. His move to Microsoft is about reigning in that control again.since mixers top streams barely break 5-7k viewers.

also Note: he owns the name not the channel and thus twitch can do whatever they want

He's clearly more pissed that Twitch is using his account to advertise other streamers after he dumped the platform than he is about the porn. Can't say there's much respect to be found for Ninja here.

If he's aimed at children I can understand.

If it's adults then there shouldn't really be a taboo advertising pornography. Everyone watches it in some form. Not really anything to be ashamed of or intrinsically bad.

Avatar image for phoenix1289

@moviegab: Because he's well known enough to classify to a degree as a celebrity. It's the same kind of reason why articles get written about people like Keanu Reeves but not that one guy named John who lives down the street. It's the fame that leads to the articles not solely that he's a guy who plays games.

Avatar image for deviltaz35
DEVILTAZ35

@phoenix1289: Still just pointless crap though. It's the worst thing that just playing a game can earn someone celebrity status. The celebrity status should go the creator not the player. The world is just ass backwards. I'd never even heard of This Ninja character until Microsoft bought him.

@phoenix1289: the term "celebrity" has lost its meaning

Avatar image for buddaball

@Pupchu: Yes it has

Avatar image for phoenix1289
phoenix1289

@Pupchu: Not really. Celebrity at it's core is defined as someone being celebrated or well known. Like him or not Ninja and other streamers fit in that category. They are well known and liked by millions of people to the point of being widely recognizable and with their very identity's being marketable brands. That fits pretty cleanly into what celebrity is.

Avatar image for el_swanno
el_swanno

@phoenix1289:

I once heard the term “celebrity” defined as “someone who is well known for being well known”.

‘Member Paris Hilton? ‘Member the Cash Me Ousside girl? ‘Member all those Big Brother winners and Idol runners-up? ‘Member Pewdie Pie? Meet your peers, Ninja. You’re keeping the bestest company you can keep.

@phoenix1289: Only person that cares is you...

Avatar image for phoenix1289

@buddaball: As long as you ignore the millions of followers and fans many big streamers have. Clearly those people all care.

Also I'm not among that group. I don't particularly care for streamers, it's just not my thing. I just recognize that a large number of people do care about that kind of content and the personalities behind it which is why they gain as much following and attention as they do. Ninja in particular had over 14 million followers on Twitch and was making around $500,000 a month. Clearly plenty of people care about him and his brand.
