NGP will sell for $300-$350 - Analyst

EEDAR's Jesse Divnich says Sony's just-announced portable could sell for current going rate of PlayStation 3 or above; due out this holiday season.

Yesterday in Tokyo, Sony officially announced its latest on-the-go gaming device, currently codenamed the NGP (Next Generation Portable). The new piece of tech sports robust specs and will be out by year's end supported by software from popular franchises like Uncharted, Resistance, and Call of Duty. However, eager gamers are likely concerned about one particular specifically…its price.

Sony has yet to officially price the NGP.
Sony has yet to officially price the NGP.

According to Electronic Entertainment Design and Research's Jesse Divnich, speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, the NGP could potentially sell at a price between $300 and $350. Divnich also said Sony is now holding the reins of portable entertainment and that the NGP will be emblematic of the portable gaming sphere, whether the device succeeds or not.

"The market is ripe for portable high-end gaming. The NGP will be a serious threat to all forms of portable entertainment," he said. "After seeing the specs today, if the NGP can't succeed, it is clear that the portable gaming landscape has forever changed. The future of portable entertainment is in the hands of Sony."

Additionally, Sony's Europe boss Andrew House told Eurogamer that the NGP will be available at an unspecified "affordable" price.

"I can't put a ballpark on it in terms of figures, but what I would say is that we will shoot for an affordable price that's appropriate for the handheld gaming space," he said.

For more on the device, check out GameSpot's NGP image feature, a first look at the unnamed Uncharted title, and an overview of the tech embedded below.

Ok for people complaining about the price, yes, having to pay for stuff sucks. I agree. But I think $300 is a fair price. I mean the 3ds is $250 and lets face it, I love Nintendo but the PSP2 is going to be a much more advanced handheld system hardware and software wise. Asking 50 bucks more than the 3DS is expected, it's a much higher end handheld.

If Sony just match the price of the 3ds they might actually compete with it.

I'm guessing it's going to be expensive, even if it's just by a bit. But I can't help obsessing over how great future Dissidias are gonna look on this. Plus, if they can deliver solid cinematic experiences like God of War and Heavy Rain, plus have an option to output to a big screen, then I think I'm sold.

If they're charging $300-$350 for the PSP2, then it's clear that they haven't learned from the PS3 how disastrous overcharging is.

"On February 18, 2011, NG-Gamer reported that Sony is pushing hard to ensure a holiday season release for North America, while the European release date will be bumped into 2012. Further, the Next Generation Portable's price range will be $250 to $280 for the normal version, while the 3G-version will have a price range of $320 to $350." Saw this on wiki so it may be wrong....

I think it this was to be expected its a PS3 (300 usd) that you can take anywhere... its a little over what im used to pay but if you think about it an Iphone alone is 500 - 600 usd.. this is higher tech and is cheaper so im still getting it

The 3DS is expensive for what it is when compared to the power & features of Sony's NGP, which is stacked out with top notch tech, looks drop dead gorgeous & plays all the latest AAA console titles so I expect to pay a little more for the NGP because of this - no illusions here. The 3DS is....well, a DS with a 3D screen - and that's it basically. It'll be hard to justify paying for another DS just for 3D.

If it hits anywhere near $350 I think people will go for the 3ds. I prefer Sony over Nintendo by a long shot, but I don't know if I really want to pay that much for a portable system. I say there best price would be around $275-$300, This way it beats Apple and doesn't push people toward Nintendo.

@WaterMelnKidd The fact that there are so many people complaining about the price points begs to differ. Like it or not, 400 and over will steer people towards the 3DS.

From the looks of it, i think even 400$ would be reasonable. People say that it's too expensive, and they could buy a ps3 for that amount, but the thing is; You can not take the ps3 WITH YOU! im glad they finally did something new on the portable side, the PSP was getting a bit old in every way.. also im looking forward to how the game developers may use the touch pad in the back.. Imagine playing for example Star wars force unleashed, with complete freedom of movement with the sticks, and controlling stuff in the air with the touchpad/touchscreen. :P I say well done sony, we just have to see the flaws when it comes out..

I think they'll have a hard time selling it for over $350 expecially during the holidays. Alot of issues with the Go was that it was way too expensive for what little it did and was improved. I'm going with around $300 for this.

Considering the fact that the original PSP was 249 and 299 respectively when first released, and this is 100 times better. I'd say 300-350 is a pretty damn good deal.

At $300 the 3DS is going down. Nintendo tends to overprice their hardware, when you consider what they're really selling you. Sony is much better at setting an appropriate price.

I remember when the ps3 was announced and everyone, including myself, were in shock to find that the console was really really really expensive. It wouldn't surprise me if the NGP goes for $350 or even more. They will say: "This piece of hardware is magnificent, and we tried to keep it affordable, and we are going to sell it at $400" :O

The Australian price will be absolutely from hell. It'll cost more than a Wii, here. Hopefully, it'll be worth every single cent (and, it must have Monster Hunter during it lifespan, or someone dies).

I think that NGP will cost loads of cash, I mean think, the PSP Go at launch already cost the same as a PS3, but the Go wasn't that technically advanced compared to NGP, it just had sliding form factor and in-built flash memory. I love the NGP though, I'll try to save up, I have like at least ten months of time.

@jecht_35 No I'm talking about optional just like with NVIDIA graphics cards, you enable it by using the tool that comes with drivers. Having the option of 3D on the PSP2/NGP would not only revolutionalise portable FPS gaming as the 3DS couldn't, but it would also be completely amazing for watching films. @dunnowhathuh $400 is not a deal breaker at all, the features here are much better than most other consoles ever released relative to the time. Portable PS3? The was almost $700 at a point, and you are complaining about $400 for a portable version? The fact is, with a PS3 you can have fun (albiet very little) inside your own home only, with a portable version you can have a lot more fun 100% of your free time. By free time I mean sitting on a bus doing nothing at all, just whip out the NGP and play some 3G FPS gaming.

If he's right, that translates into $400+ AUD. I don't see it selling very well with in Australia with that price point. Many will flock to the 3DS if Sony goes with a high price again. If they bothered learning their lesson with the PS3, they'll keep the price down.

the screen alone would cost 100 and then adding all the other features, it will most likely be 350 still isn't that bad but more then a PS3.

I think Sony should've gone with another sliding screen design instead of the old design. It looks smaller, sleeker, and more appealing to people who for listening to music or watching a movie on the go. Other than that I hope it has some great originals and tv connectivity available on the 1st model. I also hope they keep making solid 2d sidescrollers. Another original series like Shadow Complex would be a definite system seller for me.

$300-$350 that seems resonable. Expensive but it is new tech. As long as the games are plentiful. This NGP will do better then its forerunner.

Thats it? I think thats a bit low. 4 2ghz processors *more powerful than the ps3, and almost as much as the 360s*, touch screen, and all the internal gyroscopes? Its basically a better ps3, without the blu-ray. My god. I was expecting at least 400$ with a loss on every system. I would EASILY pay 300$ for this thing. As long as theirs actually SOFTWARE on this thing, unlike the psp.

This will be a purchase for me. If it does turn out to be 300-350 bucks, thats fine with me. Look at what the NGP is capable of doing, and I was planning on buying the 3DS, but after seeing this, I don't plan on it.
