Midway has announced the upcoming release of NFL Blitz 2002, the next installment in the NFL Blitz series and the first for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox. The game will be given a total makeover for its upcoming incarnations, and it will feature a variety of upgrades. A new graphics engine will offer higher polygon characters and stadiums, along with a variety of special effects. The animation has been fleshed out with the addition of 1,500 new animations for player movement, and players will now be able to edit the routes and assignments of any play in a team's playbook. In addition to the new features, NFL Blitz 2002 will also retain elements from previous entries in the series. The game will still feature licensed NFL players and teams. The game's control will stay true to the simple and accessible setup players have grown accustomed to, and the gameplay will maintain the quick arcade style that made the series a success. To complement the action, Blitz 2002 will again feature a dynamic camera.

NFL Blitz 2002 will be released for the PlayStation 2 in February, and the GameCube and Xbox versions will follow in March.
