Next Xbox One Backwards-Compatible Game Revealed

Burnout Paradise joins the lineup.

Criterion Games has confirmed that its critically acclaimed 2008 racing game Burnout Paradise will be playable on Xbox One through backwards compatibility. The UK-based developer made the announcement on Twitter in an exchange with a fan, but said players will need to stay tuned for an official release date.

No Caption Provided

This news isn't altogether surprising, as Criterion said in July that it was working with Microsoft to add the game to the Xbox One's backwards compatibility lineup.

Backwards compatibility for Xbox 360 titles is currently available on Xbox One for Preview Program members only. However, it won't be long until the feature is rolled out for everyone, as the update it's included with--New Xbox One Experience--is set to arrive in November.

At that time, more than 100 games will be supported through backwards compatibility (see the lineup of confirmed titles so far here), while more will be added thereafter.

For more on Burnout Paradise, check out GameSpot's review. Looking ahead, Criterion is working on an untitled extreme sports game that was first shown at E3 2014.

I honestly have no idea the hype over backwards compatibility, its not like the graphics have a resolution increase or a fps increase or anything so wtf is the point? Just buy the old copy in a bin with a half peeled sticker for $3.99 and play it on the xbox 360, it will most likely run better too as it would just be an emulator on the one

This Backwards compatibility is very limited... Unlike third generation consoles, this ones have the ability to run all games at once. Xbox One and Ps4 have easy architecture to program. Both consoles can run all the games back to the ps1 era and xbox 1 era. Damn dogs!

Although I don't own an Xbox One, I thought it would be Burnout 3/Revenge when I clicked. Most Burnout fans don't really prefer Paradise compared to the track-based Burnout 3 and Revenge when the series was at it's best. I'd take a remake of both of those on the PC.

Too bad it's the previous games I really enjoyed. I could never get into the totally open racing of "Paradise". I loved Takedown and Revenge (especially the crash mode). Still looking for their spiritual successor, but nothing I know of comes close.

So this is the backwards compatibility they've been promoting? A few games here and there?

@liza104_basic: I meant actual, big titles, not Viva Pinata. It's easy to make a collection of 100 little games that nobody cares about. So far it's Borderlands, Gears of War and Mass Effect. Hope they will bring more of this type...

I really hope they make Red Dead Redemption, Red Faction Guerrilla, and Bioshock Infinite backwards compatible. I really enjoyed the physics engine in Guerrilla and I think it would look great remastered on the one!

@t_smith: Backwards compatibility doesn't remaster the game at all. You're literally playing it exactly as it was on the 360.

I took a look at the UserVoice website (dedicated to feedback and suggestions). I was going to post the suggestion of an emulator for PC (since Microsoft have said in the past that they are committed to PC gaming), but someone beat me to it. Needless to say it got my vote.

I'd also like it if they managed to make racing wheels compatible as I just don't find racing games nearly as enjoyable without a wheel anymore.

You know I never even finished Paradise and I knew immediately from the screenshot I had never seen and the year 2008 it would be the worst of the Burnout games. Paradise was so intensely underwhelming.

Dis gon b gud.

Probably one of my most played last ten titles.

This is without a doubt my favourite racing game of all time.

Burnout 3 Takedown would come in at a close 2nd place.

@Dack_Lancer: Spencer said the Forza games are going to be difficult because of license agreement from car manufacturers may become an issue there.

@skemaal: I'm failing to understand why they need to get license approval for any of this. These games are not being re-released, the system is just being updated to play them. It's the same games they've always been for the same platform technically...

@nyadc: actually it's very easy... The license agreement is for the console it's meant to be played on and usually has a time frame to it. So in this case if it's meant to be played on XB360 console that's what it is, not XB1. If you already have the game you might not think of it being an issue but if someone never played F4 buys it for the first time through XB1, oops you just changed console.

@nyadc: greed....licensing a very bitchy mother.....if the orginal license said something able to use car virtual likeness in 360 products, that would forfeit being able to use on the xbox one.

Also given that we are entering November next week, I'm looking forward to seeing what the other 70-80 titles are going to be. Putting aside MS stuff, I would suggest likely lots of Ubisoft and EA stuff considering how favorable they've been to this. I have a feeling that Activision....not so much

@unreal849: Burnout 3 only came out on the OG Xbox. Burnout Revenge and Burnout Paradise were the Xbox 360 Burnout games.

@brandonw00: Uh no. It was on PS2 as well. Oh I see what you mean. They said BC would work for OG Box games also. It worked on 360, so there's no reason for it not to on XB1.

@ughz: First off, no one has confirmed that this is being worked on or coming in the future, Phil did say it was something he would like and is something he asked the team about, but that is pretty much it.

Secondly, if you are thinking about using the 360's emulator of the original Xbox, that is not an efficient or practical way to do this. For one, you would be running an emulator within another emulator which wold take a big performance hit and have all the same bugs that existed before. A better solution is to make a new native emulator that would be relatively simple due to the similar architecture and the large difference in processing power. Also it would make more games capable of being backwards compatible than were previously.

@dlCHIEF58: Spencer explicitly said OG xbox emulation was being worked on. While a new native emulator would be preferable, using the old one wouldn't be a problem. It would work just fine. You're talking about a relatively modern system emulating games meant to run on hardware that was already old 15 years ago.
